WRUP: Seeing signs edition

If someone collected the data from many weeks of WRUP and charted what everyone played week in and week out there's certain to be some sort of hidden message, isn't there? Perhaps this random assortment of games, old and new, every week is only seemingly random, disguising an intricate pattern that will tell us the future... Hmm! But, pattern or not, Team Massively's gaming habits are all over the map this weekend -- just read on to see for yourself! This week we've also asked everyone a bonus question which comes again from commenter Blah?, who asked: If you could develop your own MMO, what would the setting be?

For our answers and yours, follow the cut!

  • Beau Hindman (@spouseaggro): I will be playing a lot of different games this weekend, from Face of Mankind to Vanguard to Mabinogi. I just bought one of those new-fangled mounts in EQ2, so I will be spending a lot of time running around collecting, my favorite thing to do in the game. If I designed my own MMO, it would be a survival MMO, similar to WURM Online. But there would be real danger, real mystery. It would be on a foreign planet like Atys of Ryzom.

  • Brendan Drain (@nyphur): I am absolutely, thoroughly addicted to Heroes of Newerth right now. The game has some of the most rude and offensive players I've ever seen in an online game community, but I've been really enjoying playing it and learning the ropes. To answer the bonus question, I probably could develop my own MMO but it would be much too simple to really do any idea justice. As for what setting I'd like to see made into an MMO, I'd love to see more steampunk MMOs popping up. Combining technology with fantasy could be a great way to add something new and fresh to the MMO scene.

  • Brianna Royce: I'm boring -- LotRO again for me. Trying to get to cap before Going Rogue is out and I switch over to City of Heroes for the summer. As for setting: I'd like to see a Firefly-themed MMO actually make it someday.

  • Edward Marshall: I'll be found terrorizing the Office Park PvP zone in Fallen Earth among other crafter-related things. If I developed my own MMO it would definitely be set in a (sadly enough) post-apocalyptic setting.

  • Eliot Lefebvre: My weekend is going to be spent on some unplugging, but I do have an admiral in STO and some FFXI adventuring to do. I'd also like to pick up Split/Second, since I've been anticipating it for a while. My choice for an MMO? Transformers, I'm telling you. It'd be so awesome.

  • Justin Olivetti (@sypster): I'm hoping to finish my initial foray into UO while squeezing in some time for LotRO, DDO and STO. Basically, if it has an "O" at the end of the acronym, I'll be playing it. I'm also enjoying a touch of 100 Rogues for my iPhone. As for a MMO setting I'd like to design, I'll go for Farscape -- awesome universe, diverse alien races, and lots and lots of shouting and running and shooting. I'd roll a Hynerian.

  • Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle): It's an insanely busy weekend for me, so I'll probably grind some tradeskills via books in Runes of Magic while working (1 diamond sale, woo). Beyond that, it's LEGO Universe beta and Wizard101. As for developing my choice of MMO, well, CCP has my favorite world underway -- World of Darkness. A close runner-up would be a cyberpunk MMO, since it has not (to my knowledge) been done well as yet.

  • Larry Everett (@Shaddoe): My recipe this week is a quarter cup of SWG, half a pound of a secret beta ingredient, sprinkled with some Guild Wars, set it in the oven at one thousand degrees for about 40 hours this week, and you have my MMO triple layer cake. Blah?, I'm a huge Joss Whedon and sci-fi fan. If I had the chance to develop an MMO, I would cross the mechanics of Mass Effect 2 and EVE, then call it Firefly Online!

  • Lisa Poisso (@emused): I'll be "dating" a potential new WoW guild with a lowbie character, as I consider a server transfer and a whole new playstyle. Interesting times ... Speaking of which, I can't think how times could get any more interesting than in an MMO set in George R.R. Martin's Westeros.

  • Ryan Greene (@thatgaynerd): I'm still busy e-mailing my resume to every corner of the planet, but I hope to squeeze in some Icecrown and some Star Trek Online while I'm at it. Also, I'm, er, prepping an all-water team for the copy of Pokemon SoulSilver I just bought. 'Cause I'm cool like that. And my vote is for a Where's Waldo MMO. Players could take on the personae of cavemen, knights, beachgoers and Roman gladiators in the search for Waldo, Wenda and the gang. Runner-up: a Mega Man MMO!

  • Shawn Schuster (@SSchuster): I hope to grab some time for Red Dead Redemption this weekend, as well as level my Spiritmaster in Aion for Choose my Adventure. As for my perfect MMO setting? We need an old west MMO! Red Dead Redemption Online?

  • Seraphina Brennan (@sera_brennan): This weekend is filled with exciting games, like Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption, and my conclusion of the Split/Second racing season. Beyond that, my friends and I are going to get together to play some Paranoia, because it's just a hilarious roleplaying game where everyone dies many, many times. Perhaps we'll get in some Dungeons and Dragons Fourth Edition as well, but I'm not so sure on that. To answer the bonus question from Blah?: Gothic Victorian Steampunk MMO. I may be biased though, as I've been giving the concept of my own MMO a good amount of thought for a while now. If only I had a boatload of cash and a talented team...

  • Tateru Nino (@taterunino): Two Worlds, Republic: The Revolution, and Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online. Holding out for a more stable Dwarf Fortress release. Had to think hard about the bonus question, but I think it would definitely be post-apocalyptic. I love scavving through abandoned places and ruins looking for neat stuff.

Now it's your turn to get in on the fun -- let us know what you're playing in the comments. And if you're feeling clever (or if you aren't), you can always ask a question for the Massively staff to answer in next week's WRUP!
