Wasteland Diaries: Clan wars

Clan wars were only added to Fallen Earth shortly after the 1.4 patch, so the system hadn't been extensively tested until this past weekend. Exile and Wolves of War clashed in three towns in Sector 1 on three separate days. These engagements were some of (if not the) largest PvP battles ever fought in Fallen Earth. The clan war system has proven to be a bit unwieldy and there were some minor bugs, but for the most part, it worked as advertised. This past weekend was also testament to the fact that the server can handle 40 or more combatants slugging it out in a crowded town with their mounts present.

During the week both sides saw a heavy troop buildup in Sector 1, but it wasn't until Wolves of War massed a large band of Blight Wolf Cavalry in and around Zanesville that the battle lines were drawn. After the town was occupied by the Wolves, they fortified their positions and awaited the inevitable assault by Exile's troops.

There will be a full After Action Report after the cut!

Zanesville, May 28th

Zanesville is a well-fortified Enforcer base that sits atop a hill. There is a nearby airfield on a plateau with a bridge connecting the two. Wolves of War occupied the town through coercion and the local Enforcers were no match for them. Many of the Enforcer guards were killed during the fighting by both sides. Although both sides went through great lengths to ensure civilian casualties were minimized, as saturation fire with rocket launchers was used to some extent to clear strong-points. We approached Zanesville from the airfield side and took up positions unopposed on that end of the bridge.

We sent one squad across to establish a bridgehead. They made contact with the enemy about mid-way, taking heavy fire from the fortifications at the end of the bridge and the watchtower. Our casualties began to work to our advantage as the LifeNet facility was inside the town. The Wolves then had to deal with Exile reinforcements attacking their flanks and rear, and, after a vicious close-quarters battle, we drove them out and the town was ours. The Wolves quickly regrouped for a counterattack. See footage of the battle.

Midway, May 29th

Wolves of War and Exile then took up positions in Midway. Midway is a rather unassuming Traveler town, with no real value aside from a commanding view of the surrounding terrain. Maybe that's what the Wolves were after, but we were there for blood. Both sides geared up and moved toward the center of town. We established contact with the enemy on our right flank and moved to counter-flank. We drove them from the town but our troops were scattered and low on ammunition. We regrouped outside of the town to rest and refit while the Wolves used the time to infiltrate the tallest buildings in Midway. We would have our work cut out for us.

We moved deliberately toward the center of town, and were soon under withering sniper and rocket fire. Most of the resistance was coming from two of the central multi-story buildings. We advanced under heavy fire and stormed both buildings. Despite heavy casualties we cleared both buildings. In some cases we engaged in rooftop-to-rooftop combat. The Wolves regrouped outside the town and attacked shortly thereafter. We didn't have much time to prepare a fortified position, but we still managed to hold the town until a cease-fire was called. See footage of the battle.

Junk Fortress, May 29th

I was near Embry Crossroads several hours after the Midway battle, repairing my armor and cleaning my weapons. I received a communique from Commander Dallas stating that there was a small band of Wolves near Junk Fortress. They were probably carousing with the local raiders and smoking crater weed. There is a large Vista population in that clan. But enough speculation as to what they were doing. The fact was, we needed to clear them out. We put together a small group and proceeded to do so. We engaged them in several skirmishes, with casualties on both sides. Control of the fortress switched hands a few times, but the battle continued to rage thanks to the nearby LifeNet pods. But with no clear objectives, we couldn't justify continuing the fight. See footage of the battle.

Embry, May 30th

The final showdown was apparently going to take place in the Plateau region's capital city. Embry is a town with a heavy Banker influence, and the Bankers were courteous enough to remain neutral. Force build-ups on both sides were the heaviest yet, and there were many bystanders and on-lookers; indeed, there were several intrigued civilians who followed us around in order to be close to the action. We chose to fortify ourselves in and around the Banker's V.I.P. vaults. It was a three-story building, and we conceded the first floor to create a single choke-point at the only stairwell. Our initiative paid off, and the Wolves attacked us en masse through the choke-point. When they overtook the second floor, we fell back to the third and regrouped for a counter-assault. We succeeded in repelling the attack more than once. Try as they might, they were only able to clear two floors of the three-story building, and they retreated to the Medical building. We prepared a hasty attack to push them out of Embry for good. In a matter of minutes we had them defending from too many directions, and the battle spilled out into the streets.

Again, with no clear objectives, and unlimited reinforcements, a cease-fire was called. Both sides regrouped, and the leaders called for a parley. We strode up the street toward the gang of thugs known as the Wolves of War. We were wary and had our weapons locked and loaded. The Wolves seemed more lackadaisical, but we didn't let our guard down. Once both sides were face-to-face, some heated words and punches were exchanged. Seconds later, shots were fired. I don't know who fired the first shots, but chaos erupted, and after a few violent seconds, the First Plateau War had come to an end. See footage of the battle.

Here is an excellent documentary of the entire war.

Good fight, Wolves of War!
