iPhone 4: Kelly's first 24 hours
I was one of those who had a new iPhone 4 magically appear yesterday, so I've had over 24 hours with mine to touch it and love it and name it George. Here are my first impressions:
New screen: The slightly slimmer case is nice. I really thought I'd dislike the square edges, but they aren't bothering me at all. I promise, nobody is more surprised than I am. It's slick. I know people say that as a colorful expression, but I mean the textbook definition of slick. If I'm using my laptop and sitting on the couch, I generally connect my phone and set it on the arm of the couch. I won't be doing that anymore! All it did last night was slide off into my lap.
New camera: I came from a 3G, so I just got the (official) ability to shoot video on my phone, not to mention the zoom and focus options. Getting the light will probably turn out to be awesome as well, but suddenly the sun decided to make an appearance in Oregon, so I haven't had a chance to really try it out.
(Did I mention the screen? I hope so. It's a beaut!)
There are still no separate sounds for different notifications, which is a software thing that I hope will get resolved someday. Otherwise, I have had success with calls and synced over 1300 songs, around 1000 photos, and loads of apps. It took time, but I have synced everything back and picked up where I left off.
Quitting apps: It doesn't seem that anything actually quits anymore, which is weird after all the training iPhone users have gotten with the "one at a time" environment. So far, I'm not seeing the battery hit, but I am willing to bet that a whole lot of folks have. Perhaps they don't realize that those apps aren't really quitting, they're just hiding out in that secret dock down there.
EDIT: As commenters have pointed out, only apps that are actually doing something in the background are going to affect performance or battery life (like Pandora). Everything else is just in that "waiting until you go back to it" state, so there isn't a real need to go through and close everything all the time. Thank you commenters!
Folders are fab: I love folders! I love them less right now when I am trying to organize apps, and I keep making folders instead of moving icons. Once I get everything settled in where I want it, I think it will be wonderful, though. (Pro tip: You can create a folder and then add it to the dock for additional OCD organization.)
Overall: I love it! This is the first time that I have had a phone for two years, liked it, and then bought the current upgrade from the same company. I have had a mobile number since 1998, so I have used my share of phones. Honestly, I haven't had any issues with my previous iPhone, so I was really looking forward to the new one. As of now, glass and metal seems a bit better than the plastic back, so I feel a bit more confident in going without a Bumper initially. I have a few little nitpicks, but I can't remember ever having been excited about the upgrade to the phone that I already had ... until I upgraded my iPhone.
