WRUP: Everything is better with dinosaurs edition

Hey guys do you see those totally sweet dinosaurs up there? Those are a bunch of dinosaurs. They all look like they are plant-eating dinosaurs, but you had better get your dinosaur gun just to be on the safe side. Some of those dinosaurs look like they could do some serious damage. And stay tuned later today for all of our columns to have random insertions of dinosaur-related topics as we switch over to a mostly-dinosaur format to... wait, we're not doing that?

Man, everything this weekend would be so much better with dinosaurs. Instead, our WRUP doesn't even mention a couple of dinosaurs, not even an ornithischian. All we talked about are the MMOs and other games that we'll be playing over the weekend, along with discussing our feelings on PvP in the MMO space. If you can get over the egregious lack of anything dinosauric, you can jump past the cut for our responses and let us know what you're playing in the comments. Or just talk about some totally sweet dinosaurs, that's cool too.
Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman): I will be playing 24 different free-to-play games for 24 hours this weekend! If you want to donate or see the games list, you can here.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna): I'll be in City of Heroes this weekend (surprise, surprise). My red-side tanker is finally starting to kick some butt! I'll also probably swing by Zentia's newest open beta version. The cuteness.

Bonus question: I loved the adrenaline from UO-style open PvP, and I'm still on a WoW PvP server (where I've spent ridiculous amounts of time in BGs over the years), but I tend to prefer Guild Wars-style battles in which grindy gear is eclipsed by teamwork.

Recent announcements regarding what I have repeatedly stated to be a favorite game — that is, Final Fantasy XIV — have renewed my already-extant desire to play it for most of the weekend. I might dip into City of Heroes as well, since I've been slacking a bit over there.

PvP is something I'm not usually a fan of in MMOs — I'll take to it in offerings such as Team Fortress 2 on occasion, but for the most part I prefer PvE. The more balance that's forced on PvP in an MMO, the closer it gets to an offering akin to that which is provided in games built around PvP, where skill is king and everyone starts a match on the same footing... and if I want that flavor of gameplay, those are the games I'll aim for.

Greg Waller
:
I'll be playing WAR all weekend. As for the bonus question, yes, I PvP. PvP is my bread and butter, my steak and cheese. I thrive on it. Also, I might seem biased (just a little winking smile emoticon) but WAR has the best PvP out there; nothing else comes close to giving me the fix that I need.

Jef Reahard: SWG, Darkfall, and Aion for me, plus the requisite AoC/EQII and whatever mystery title is next for Community Detective. Yeah, I don't sleep much.

As for the lightning round, I don't generally PvP in MMOs unless I'm defending myself (which usually amounts to an efficient form of fast travel). Red Dead Redemption multiplayer and Counterstrike are where I get my gank-and-be-ganked fix. MMO PvP reminds me of college baseball. The real game is played in the pros (the FPS genre) by people who aren't relying on the pee-wee crutch of an aluminum bat (i.e., gear).

Jeremy Stratton (@Jeremy_Stratton): Now that mid-terms have just ended, I finally get a little time to play MMOs this weekend. I don't even know what I'll do. I may just divide my time between Lord of the Rings Online, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Runes of Magic and Alganon. I was never big into PvP, but I've enjoyed it in RoM and World of Warcraft. I love the battlefields in RoM, but I think WoW has mechanics fleshed out better. If RoM is able to get a better way to match opponents, I think it'd give WoW's PvP a run for its money.

Justin Olivetti
(@Sypster): The Hall of Monuments calculator finally gave me enough motivation to dive into Guild Wars for real, and so far it's sticking. I have a long, long way to go before getting any points towards Guild Wars 2, but something tells me I have more than enough time to get it done before GW2 launches. As for PvP, I generally don't. If I want to get teabagged, I will go to Starbucks and order Earl Gray, hot.

Seraphina Brennan (@Sera_Brennan): This weekend is all about Extra Life. I'm going to be playing games for 24 hours, and you readers better come keep me company! Otherwise I'm going to be very lonely and I might cry on the livestream, but no one will see it because no one will be watching. So come watch and prevent my tears!

At the start of every weekend, we catch up with the Massively staff members and ask them, "What are you playing this week?" (Otherwise known as: WRUP!) Join us to see what we're up to in and out of game — and catch us in the comments to let us know what you're playing, too!
