WRUP: Pax Bostonia edition
I've a confession to make — despite loving New England with a passion that defies common sense, I've never really been super keen on driving into Boston. Granted, the operative part of that sentence may very well be "driving." Still, it's the weekend of PAX East, which means there's nothing to be done other than ship on up to Boston. Yours truly, Larry Everett, Karen Bryan, and Justin Olivetti will all be in attendance, so if you see one of us wandering about, please, by all means, say hello! Or simply hand us money and pizza.
Whether or not you're going to be in Massachusetts this weekend, you're probably going to be getting your game on, which fits in nicely with the fact that this is WRUP. This week, we're both talking about our weekend activities and answering the question of what game we'd be playing if we had more time in the day. So click on past the break to find out what we're up to, and let us know what you've got planned in the comments!
Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman): I will be playing my new Rise and Shiny game, Monster Forest. I will also be continuing to go through my massive list of browser-based games in preparation for my new column. It takes a fine eye to see through some of the browser world's tricksy single-player-as-MMO ways, but there are many, many great titles out there to be explored. In fact, right now I am busy trading off space events in a game that spreads across every device, operating system, and browser I have in this house. I'll be continuing with my a few other games and will hopefully get some time in Xsyon (if the lag clears up).
If there were one game I would love to play with more time it would be Mabinogi, I think. There is literally so much content in it that I just can't keep up, and the stories and systems in it are truly top-notch (don't let the graphics fool you).
Brendan Drain (@nyphur): As usual, I'll be on EVE Online, hoping for some highsec Sansha incursions to appear in the evenings this weekend. The respawn times appear to be random, and incursions in high-security space are often completed within just a few hours of appearing. Unfortunately, that means there may not be any highsec incursions active during our scheduled incursion fleet meet-up times. If there were more time in the day, I'd probably sink it into working on my own game design projects or do extra work. I'm boring like that!
Brianna Royce (@nbrianna): I'm probably not playing anything this weekend. I'm sick in like three ways, so my MMO of choice will be TiVo roulette while I hunker down on the couch. What, it's a real thing.
If I had a whole lot more time... Allods, Runes of Magic, LEGO Universe, and Global Agenda are all appealing to me, but I haven't had the time or stamina to invest when my guild is elsewhere, and my spare MMO time usually goes toward pseudo-sandboxes where I've already got a foundation and investment (so I can just play and not grind).
Eliot Lefebvre: It's PAX time! I'm hoping to get some hands-on time with Star Wars: The Old Republic, meet up with some NCsoft folks, and generally enjoy myself. What little gaming time I have will be devoted to Dragon Age II, which I'm absolutely in love with.
More time would almost certainly go to Guild Wars or Star Trek Online, possibly both. They're both games I like a lot, but I don't quite have the space to fit them into my play schedule at the moment.
Jef Reahard: Taking a bit of an MMO (and computer) break this weekend due to an impending birthday celebration. If I had more time I would return to Fallen Earth, Vanguard, and Global Agenda, probably in that order.
Jeremy Stratton (@Jeremy_Stratton): I'll be dungeon-diving in Runes of Magic. I thought I'd start with Necropolis of Mirrors and run it ad infinitum as part of my journey to learn more about RoM's dungeons. It also has the best acronym, which adds a hint of joy when looking for a group. I'll also be taking a peek at Forsaken World.
The one game I'd play... there's this one game where I get to sit around all day admiring the shiny Porsche in my driveway, have maids do all my housework, and only ever have to walk to my mailbox to pick up a fat check each week. Ever heard of it? No? Well. Until someone makes that game for me, I'll choose RoM.
Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle): Since much of the team's at PAX, I suspect my gaming this weekend will involve new and creative games like "how many cups of coffee per hour can I drink and still remain quasi-sane." I'll be signing into EVE Online long enough to switch skill training and into DC Universe Online to grab my vault goodies, but that's about it.
As far as the game I'd play if there were more time? Honestly? I'm really missing my tabletop group a lot lately. We have really crazy, fun adventures together that often devolve into ludicrous puns, pop-culture references, and hours of goofing off. As far as MMOs, it would be EverQuest, EVE, and Fallen Earth.
Larry Everett (@Shaddoe): This weekend, I will be playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2, and a bunch of other games that have not been released yet, SUCKERS! I mean, I wish you were all here at PAX East with me.
If there were more time in my day, I would probably play a heavy living-world MMO, like Xsyon or Wurm. I love the idea of "living" in a virtual world.
MJ Guthrie: This weekend I will hone my juggling skills by diving head first in Xsyon while still maintaining some quality time in Aion. See? I need more hours already! If there were more hours in the day that I could devote solely to gaming (as if! Too many other projects demand my time if I could, including a finishing a book, rereading the series A Song of Ice and Fire, designing websites...), I would so totally begin mass creating in LEGO Universe. I have an inherent love of LEGO blocks; I still own a bunch! And possibly get back into Fallen Earth. And Vanguard. Wait, how many hours could we add?
Rubi Bayer (@Rubi_): I'm trying for some quality time with Dungeons and Dragons Online and RIFT this weekend. Whoa, more time in the day? That would be awesome — let me know when someone invents that! Dungeons and Dragons Online is easily at the top of that list for me. I've got a Rogue in DDO with a gorgeous new build and new gear, and she doesn't get nearly enough playtime.
Shawn Schuster (@SSchuster): I'll be playing some RIFT and ARGO Online, wishing I were playing Dragon Age II. Must. Resist. Buying. Another. Game. Which brings me to the bonus question. I'd probably play more console games if I had the time. They're not a priority, since I need to know about MMOs first and foremost, but I'm often enticed by console games.
At the start of every weekend, we catch up with the Massively staff members and ask them, "What are you playing this week?" (Otherwise known as: WRUP!) Join us to see what we're up to in and out of game — and catch us in the comments to let us know what you're playing, too!
