iPad 2 visits a Guatemalan volcano

Bringing the magical iPad 2 on a trip to Guatemala isn't a story in itself. Of course, people are going to be intrigued by the tablet, GarageBand, etc. What is slightly more interesting is the fact that it survived some rather rough treatment from its owner, tech writer Robert Evans, along the way. The iPad didn't have a case (egads!) and was sat on at least once (yikes!), and it ventured into a cloud and a volcano (uh oh) — likely pushing the limits of the suggested temperature and moisture limits. The iPad 2 did fine in all these torture tests. Would a laptop have endured the same and survived? Possibly not.

Robert's journey is a fun, quick read. The iPad was used for a variety of things, including sniffing Wi-Fi connections. He points out that he only charged it twice in seven days. In fact, his trip almost sounds like an Apple commercial since the iPad comes off as a perfect laptop replacement. As he says, "If all my mezcal-soaked shenanigans couldn't kill it, I don't expect your daily commute will."
