WRUP: Totally awesome space adventure edition

Outer space is full of really cool things. Like that nebula, right there, which is totally exactly those colors and not just a collection of dust from an exploding star. We should get into a spaceship right now and have a totally sweet space adventure, because all sorts of good things happen in deep space and that would just be the best idea ever. Plus, nothing could ever go wrong, which is really great. In summary, outer space.

Before you suit up for the awesome, however, you should probably take a look at this week's WRUP. It'll let you know what the Massively staff is up to this weekend, and that sort of information will definitely remain relevant while you take the 6,500 lightyear journey to the Crab Nebula. We're also talking about our MMO mentors, so jump on past the cut to see what we'll be up to over the weekend. And after that? Leave us a note in the comments to share what you'll be up to for the weekend! (Then, you know, go into space.)

Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman): I will be continuing to build my virtual home in Second Life, something that I am very excited to share with the readers. I've had various houses and plots over the years, but this one will be extra special, especially since modeling and sculpting have made some incredible items possible. I am also going to move on Ashen Empires, an old-school freebie that has been recommended to me several times. I'm working on getting more mobile games together for livestreaming, then I just need to figure out the best way to stream them!

I've had several friends and people whom I look up to from many different games, but I wouldn't consider many of them mentors. They have taught me a lot, but honestly I haven't found anyone who has had more experience in MMOs than me. It might sound arrogant, but it's just a fact that I haven't met anyone that plays like me or wants to explore like I do. I've learned a lot from my wife's style of gaming, but even she prefers to sort of settle down with one game for a long time. Still, I have made so many amazing friends that I wouldn't change a thing.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna): City of Heroes, of course, thanks to the free reactivation period. I've missed it!

I had a dear friend in Ultima Online who really showed me the ropes in the early days, taught me how to game the crafting system and make a boatload of money, that kinda thing. Ah, the days of casting energy vortices in Hythloth behind a wall of impassable flour bags! When he moved back overseas, our playtimes didn't overlap as much, but I doubt I'd have lasted a month in Ultima Online without him, forget later MMOs. Hearts to you, Dex.

Eliot Lefebvre: More leveling in Final Fantasy XIV, some play in City of Heroes now that a persistent bug with one of my characters has been squared away, and some leveling in Final Fantasy XI to enjoy the May version update. It'll be a pretty standard weekend, honestly.

I've never been mentored, but I do try to offer myself up as a mentor to people who are newer to games. A lot of MMOs can be pretty intimidating when you're just starting out, and I know I would have liked to have someone there to teach me more.

Jeremy Stratton (@Jeremy_Stratton): It will be mainly Runes of Magic for me. Apart from that, I'm going to try to have some fun with science.

I've never had an MMO mentor. I raised myself on free-to-play MMOs for about a year before I started playing World of Warcraft and others. I'm self-taught.

Matt Daniel: I'm playing "move my furniture and gazillion books seven hours to the Northwest." Really horrible game. Awful grind. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

For the bonus question, nein. Everything I know I either taught myself or read on wikis and such, with the exception of a few pieces of information I've gotten from other players, but I've never had a mentor per se.

MJ Guthrie: This weekend will find me checking out the great reaches of space in EVE Online as well as soaking up some double XP in Aion. I may have one last fling in Star Trek Online and poke around in Xsyon a bit. As for mentors, I would say that I have friends — each one has offered something that then blended into the whole that is my gaming experience.

Patrick Mackey (@mackeypb): Big surprise, I'm playing Champions Online! I also have to sift through hours of raw fraps footage so I can put more stuff on my YouTube.

I've had quite a few MMO mentors, from my friend Nathan who first got me into EverQuest, to my former boss Debbie who showed me the ropes in Ragnarok Online. Lately, I've kind of flown on my own, but I continue the tradition by mentoring for others instead.

At the start of every weekend, we catch up with the Massively staff members and ask them, "What are you playing this week?" (Otherwise known as: WRUP!) Join us to see what we're up to in and out of game — and catch us in the comments to let us know what you're playing, too!
