Trine 2 co-op works cross-platform, from PC to Mac, available now in beta

Finnish developer Frozenbyte has announced that its upcoming cooperative platform puzzler Trine 2 will support cross-platform multiplayer across PC and Mac, courtesy of Valve's Steam Play framework. The ongoing beta is also now available for Mac, meaning would-be cross-platformers can test out the new feature immediately ... that is, if you pre-purchased the title.

Note: While Trine 2 will also be available via just about every method of digital distribution known to man – including GamersGate, Direct2Drive, the Mac App Store, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation Network – only the Steam PC and Mac releases will support cross-platform play. Sorry, Xbox players won't be buddying up with PS3 players. The release is still a vague "later in 2011" and if our Finnish Indie Dev Hunks calendar is accurate, there isn't much of 2011 left.

Trine 2™ gets cross-platform multiplayer for PC and Mac, Collector's Edition announced
Pre-order beta updated with Mac version and NVIDIA® 3D Vision™ compatibility

Helsinki, Finland - 23 November 2011 - Finnish game developer Frozenbyte is pleased to announce that the Steam version of Trine 2 will support cross-platform multiplayer between PC and Mac thanks to Steam Play. The currently ongoing Trine 2 Beta has been made available for the Mac, making cross-platform multiplayer available right now for gamers who have pre-purchased Trine 2.

"The cross-platform multiplayer between Windows and Mac makes it easier to find people to play with, allowing everyone to enjoy the full co-op potential of the beta and the upcoming game," said Lauri Hyvärinen, CEO of Frozenbyte.

In addition to the Mac version, the two-level PC beta now also supports NVIDIA 3D Vision. The stereoscopic mode is enabled automatically upon launch of the game. "Trine 2 looks stunning with 3D Vision. We knew it was going to be good but it really caught us by a surprise just how great it looks. Trine 2 has been built in full 3D, and while some of this may go unnoticed when the game is played normally, 3D Vision makes it pop out in a way that is just amazing," concluded Lauri Hyvärinen.

Trine 2 is available for pre-purchase now on Steam and other channels, including GamersGate and soon Direct2Drive. The regular edition is priced at $14.99/12.99 euros/11.99 pounds. The Collector's Edition is available for $24.99/19.99 euros/17.99 pounds. The Collector's Edition includes a digital artbook with developer commentary and the original soundtrack by the acclaimed composer Ari Pulkkinen. All versions use Steamworks for easy multiplayer, Achievements and Steam Cloud. A DRM free version of Trine 2 is coming in 2012.

Focus Home Interactive is releasing the retail, physical copy of the Trine 2 Collector's Edition in Europe, which will include the beautiful physical artbook and the digital version of the soundtrack.

Trine 2 will be released later in 2011 on Steam for PC and Mac, in the Mac App Store for Mac, for PC and Mac in European retail, Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PlayStation®Network for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and later for Linux and other platforms.
