OK, enough of these goody-goody Jedi, all right? It's time to come to the Dark Side of Star Wars: The Old Republic, where the Sith Inquisitor reigns supreme. The Inquisitor fills a variety of roles within the ranks of the Empire, from healing to ranged DPS to melee DPS to tanking. There's an option for any playstyle, which makes the Inquisitor a great character for the indecisive among us. Also, you get Force Lightning, so that's pretty cool.

On your journey as a Sith Inquisitor, you begin as a slave who has recently discovered his (or her) Force-sensitivity. As you arrive at the Sith Academy on the red planet of Korriban, you're faced with a simple choice: Become Sith -- or die.


The Sith Inquisitor's race selection includes Human, Twi'lek, Zabrak, Rattataki, and of course, Sith Pureblood. As you make your way through the Sith Academy on Korriban, you will come to find that not all is stable within the Empire. Eventually you'll find yourself embroiled in political intrigue as the Sith try their damnedest to ensure you don't make it out of the Academy alive. Thwarting these attempts, however, will prove your usefulness to the Sith, thereby granting you your first lightsaber (and your life).

The flavor of the Sith Inquisitor is exactly what you'd expect from a Force-wielding agent of the Sith. There's Force Lightning flying all over the place as the Inquisitor bounds around the battlefield wearing light, regal robes and wielding a lightsaber, or in the case of the Assassin, a dual-bladed saber. So if you're all about flowing robes, Force powers, and lightsaber duels, then the Inquisitor is right up your alley.


From levels 1 to 10, the Inquisitor is a hybrid melee and ranged character, though the focus falls slightly on the side of ranged combat. A number of lightning-focused Force abilities are at your disposal, as are a couple of basic saber attacks in case some poor chump wants to get personal. Many of your abilities will have secondary effects as well, such as stuns, movement speed reduction, and so forth, which provides you with a number of tools to ensure that you control the flow of combat.

When you choose your advanced class at level 10, you're given the choice between the Sorceror and the Assassin. The Sorcerer is a ranged class and can be specced to deal ranged DPS or to heal using his Force powers. He continues the style of the Inquisitor base class, wearing light robes and wielding a single lightsaber. The Assassin, meanwhile, is granted a number of stealth abilities and can be built to be a Rogue-esque melee DPS character or a tank.

No matter which role you choose, you'll be using Force as your primary mechanic. Force operates very similarly to mana in other games, in that you begin with a set amount of Force, and each special ability will drain your Force pool. As such, it's essential that you work out a rotation that provides the greatest benefits while not completely depleting your Force pool.

Final thoughts

If you list Darth Maul and Emperor Palpatine amongst your greatest heroes, you'll find yourself in good company with the Sith Inquisitor. Whether you want to stand on the back lines slinging Force lightning as a Sorceror or you prefer to sneak around stabbing Republic scum in the back with a dual-bladed saber as an Assassin, the Inquisitor has something to offer any playstyle.
