5 apps to help celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The birthday of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. has been celebrated in all fifty of the United States since 2000, honoring the memory of the man who championed the cause of nonviolent activism to successfully protest racial discrimination in federal and state law. Today we look at five apps that help to learn more about the man, his work, and the struggle for civil rights.

The app features a timeline of the struggle, from Jim Crow laws and mob violence to desegregation and the Civil Rights Act, and provides maps of civil rights landmarks across the state. Biographies of famous people like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. are included.

W.E.B Du Bois: A Historical Collection ($9.99)

From the Reconstruction era to the Civil Rights Movement, one man devoted his life to gaining equal treatment for black people. William Edward Burghardt De Bois was a sociologist, historian, novelist, activist and co-founder of the NAACP, and this iPad app highlights his writings, providing "the essential readings of all African American studies programs today."
