NHL 15 missing '94 Anniversary mode' on Xbox One, PS4

The '94 Anniversary Mode' featured in EA's NHL 14 will return in the sports title's next installment, but not on the newest generation of consoles. NHL 14's '94 Anniversary Mode' re-envisioned the classic speedy gameplay of the EA Sports hit NHL '94, presenting matches in the game's modern engine.

Speaking with Joystiq, EA Canada Producer Sean Ramjagsingh confirmed the bonus mode would not make the transition to the Xbox One and PS4 versions of NHL 15, but would return on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Adding the mode, Ramjagsingh says, was originally "to celebrate the anniversary."

"That's why we wanted to put it in, in the first place," he adds. "When we started to talk about who would maybe be buying our game, if they haven't moved on to the next-generation of consoles yet, they could be more casual hockey fans." The Anniversary Mode, Ramjagsingh says, speaks more to those casual players rather than it draws in hardcore fans from its nostalgia.

Since the game's release, EA has transitioned its teams to a new engine, specific to Xbox One and PS4. Though NHL 15 on new consoles will be powered by EA's new Ignite engine, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are not. Ramjagsingh did not cite the engine shift as a reason the Anniversary Mode was missing.
