How to ruin your pants, or get Alien: Isolation on Oculus Rift
A few questions before we get to the meat of the Alien: Isolation on Oculus Rift instructions:
  • Do you own an Oculus Rift?
  • Do you have Alien: Isolation on PC?
  • Are you sure you want to do this?
  • Like, really?
Everyone still with us – let's do this thing.

The folks at Reddit have listed these instructions after some painstaking trial and error, so kudos over there. To enable Alien: Isolation's Oculus Rift support, you'll need to finagle with some code. In the DATA folder, find ENGINE_SETTINGS.XML and change the stereo options to the following:

<Setting name="Stereo Mode">
<Quality name="Rift" precedence="4"/>
<Quality name="Off" precedence="4"/>
</Setting>

Then, set Oculus to extended mode and "in the Oculus configuration utility, pause the service." You should be good to go. For the complete instructions and a nifty run-down of exactly how this workaround came to be, see the Reddit post.

Creative Assembly made a demo of Alien: Isolation on Oculus Rift for E3 2014, and at the time Creative Lead Al Hope said that it was only a prototype, with no full-game Oculus support planned. That short demo was more than enough fright for us. The full game, sans-Rift, is "long, grueling and relentless" in a mostly good and terrifying way.

So, one last time, we ask you: Are you sure you want to play Alien: Isolation on Oculus Rift?
