Dragon Age: Inquisition 4-player co-op revealed, separate to campaign

BioWare revealed the third Dragon Age game mirrors the third Mass Effect by introducing four-player online multiplayer on top of the single-player experience. An IGN preview reveals the co-op in Dragon Age: Inquisition runs separate to the main RPG campaign, with players ditching their Inquisitor robes to team up in randomly generated mini-dungeons that take around 20 to 30 minutes to complete in total.

There'll be three multiplayer campaigns at launch, each generating a level made up from 5 of 10 smaller, pre-designed areas. Players will see different areas in different orders, with variables like the types of enemy encounter changing across different sessions. Also, rather than playing as the Inquisitor, you and your buddies are lackeys for the main hero. As Bioware's Mike Laidlaw told IGN, the studio's attempted to infuse the mulitplayer heroes with personality: "They're kind of like mini followers, and they banter among themselves."

There are twelve unlockable multiplayer heroes available at launch, with three for each class (Warrior, Rogue and Mage). As players progress and earn gold they can unlock new heroes, as well as character skins, equipment, grenades, salves and so on. While there is the option to spend real-life cash to get Platinum, BioWare's Scylla Costa said it's an "optional time saver" currency, and that nothing in the multiplayer is behind a paywall. Furthermore, all additional multiplayer DLC will be free.

August 27, 2014 - EDMONTON, Alberta – BioWare™, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA), today announced the cooperative dungeon crawling multiplayer mode in Dragon Age™: Inquisition. Created alongside the massive single player campaign, this marks the first time gamers can play with their friends in the Dragon Age franchise. The multiplayer mode in Dragon Age: Inquisition will feature action-packed four player cooperative quests separate from the single player open world story.



"For Dragon Age: Inquisition, a special team of veteran developers from the Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises created fun, fast-paced multiplayer gameplay that requires strategic teamwork on top of Inquisition's party-based combat and extensive loot and crafting system," said Aaryn Flynn, General Manager, BioWare. In Dragon Age: Inquisition's multiplayer mode, four players will team up across a range of multiplayer quests and objectives, exploring intricate dungeons and vanquishing all who oppose them. While dungeon-crawling, players will collect loot, salvage items, craft new weapons and armor, and unlock new characters. At launch, players will be able to unlock up to twelve characters across the three Inquisition classes of Legionnaire, Reaver and Mage, each playing a different and strategic role in multiplayer combat. Multiplayer in Dragon Age: Inquisition is a standalone experience from the open world story players will embark in the main game, and will not have an impact on single player progression or story.



Fans of Dragon Age: Inquisition have the chance to experience multiplayer August 29 – September 1 at PAX Prime in Seattle, Washington. Hands-on will be available in the XBox Booth located at the North Hall, 4th Floor, Booths 412, 422, 432.
