Opinion: The MacBook Pro isn't "missing" an SD Card slot.
The primary camera for most people is their smartphone. Yes, some smartphones have a MicroSD card slot. Many phones have enough built-in storage that users feel they do not need to expand their storage. So, therefore, the majority of people who use their phone as their camera either upload their photos and videos to the iCloud/Google Drive, or they transfer them via USB to their PC or Mac. (For the record, "USB" in that sentence meant either USB-A or USB-C)
So this begs the question: do we even need an SD Card slot on computers anymore? Or is it just taking up precious internal space that could be used for more important, modern technology?
I am one that believes the latter is true. It's only logical that as smartphones replace traditional cameras, cloud storage and USB file transfer replaces the SD card.
In the same way that digital music and movies killed the computer CD/DVD drive and how headphones that are either wireless or use your phone's charging port are (albeit rather slowly) killing the smartphones' headphone jack, it is also time for the SD card slot to go the way of the dodo bird.
Some of you are probably wondering about the internal space aspect. We, as humans, naturally prefer the better looking devices. The ones that are thin, have bright displays, and look premium. And we want the most bang for our buck. We want security. We want features.
So, in order for Apple to deliver a thinner laptop with a better display, a fingerprint sensor, and a new touchscreen panel (Touch Bar), they had to cut the SD card slot loose.
And honestly, I don't blame them. It lived a good life. But now, it's time for the SD card slot to fade into extinction.
Just like the dodo bird.
