Microsoft quietly edited its Xbox 'Play Anywhere' promise

"Clarification" means certain games might not come to PC.

Microsoft proudly told the world last week that "Every new title published from Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere." That's now changed. The company drew ire yesterday after editing its blog post announcing the decision. But although the company did change the wording to "Every new title published from Microsoft Studios that we showed onstage at E3 this year will support Xbox Play Anywhere" (emphasis ours), it says it's not going back on core tenet of that promise.

Play Anywhere, for the uninitiated, is Microsoft's branding for a feature that lets you buy a game once and play it on both Xbox One and a Windows 10 PC. Rather than signalling a shift in policy, Microsoft Xbox head Phil Spencer said the change in wording is simply to give leeway in case there's a "unique game [that's] not right for all devices." Microsoft still intends to bring its franchises to both Xbox One and Windows 10 in the future, he continued, so don't give up on playing Halo 6 on your PC just yet.

If you're confused about what will and won't be part of Play Anywhere, Microsoft has a pretty comprehensive list on the feature's microsite.
