  • Getting Divorced in the 21st Century - There's an App for That...

As we find new and exciting ways to use technology, app developers continue to amaze us with their offerings. "There's an app for that" can be said about almost any task we set out to complete. Whether we want to take funny photos, track our calories, or even find partner, we can rest assured that someone out there has taken the time to make an app that will help us succeed in whatever mission we choose to accomplish. While getting divorced is probably one of the most unpleasant things one can do, there are numerous developers who have set out to make the process easier by building apps designed to do everything from teach us how to talk to our kids about the divorce process to reminding single fathers what they need to buy at the grocery store. Let's take a look at some apps that can help us keep our sanity during divorce: 1. Our Family Wizard - Cost: $99 per year Looking for an easy way to co-parent after getting divorced? Our Family Wizard (OFW) will allow you to share messages, discuss finances, and keep your ex-spouse up to date about important things like doctor visits, school functions, general emotional health. OFW has become so popular that many divorce lawyers are now offering the app as part of their services. They simply bill the price of the app into their retainer. 2. Support Pay - Cost: Free (you can purchase premium plan with more features starting at $9.99 per month) Support Pay makes it easy for dads (or moms) to keep track of their child support payments. A parent who misses too many child support payments can end up in jail so if you aren't normally the responsible type you may want to download this app to avoid ending up in the slammer. Support Pay lets you track payments, share receipts, or even automatically send payments to your ex-spouse. It can also help reduce conflict by minimizing the communication between a divorced couple. This app is really neat because it doesn't try to do every single little task for you. It focuses on just one thing and does that one thing really well. 3. Wevorce - Cost: Free (you pay the service provider Wevorce connects you with) Wevorce is more of a service than a full fledged app. It asks you and spouse a series of questions and then matches you up with service providers who fit your needs. Wevorce is a good tool for uncontested, low net worth divorces rather than complicated ones. If you and your soon to be ex are getting along, Wevorce might be able to make your split go a little smoother. 4. 2houses - Cost: Free (can upgrade for more features) 2houses is a powerful little app that allows you and your co-parent to track events, share information, monitor expenses, and keep each other in the loop. According to their website, 2houses is used by over 70,000 families from around the globe. This app will also keep track of insurance information, vaccination records, and important medical information. Divorce isn't easy... Divorce definitely isn't one of the easier things you might need to do, but rest assured there are many companies out there trying to make the process a lot easier through technology. The four apps above were the ones that I felt would be most helpful in a real world situation. While researching this article I found some other apps that while not immediately useful, could come in handy at some point. Let's see what they are: Semi-Helpful Divorce Apps 1. Divorce Log - Cost: Free Divorce Log is pretty neat looking app that will help you keep track of things going on during your divorce. While you may like the "divorce theme" of the app, you could simply use Evernote or plain old Notes to keep track of things. 2. iSplit Divorce - Cost: Free (premium upgrades available) iSplit Divorce allows you to keep track of physical items like TVs, stereo, and other "stuff" that you acquired during your marriage. The UI looks a bit like a game (which might be fun) but I could see this app causing problems for couples who cannot agree on the value of their stuff. 3. Parenting Apart - Cost: $0.99 Cents Parenting Apart helps you get through your divorce by helping you find answers to common questions. While this sounds really cool, there's another service that can do that for you: Google. This app, created by , is like a FAQ for the divorce process. The app even includes an "Ask Christina" feature in case you get stuck! While this shiny object might be somewhat helpful, Google will answer your questions for free.
