  • Do You Know Who's Lurking about in the Dark Web

As a little child you probably always wanted to sleep with the light on because of those monsters that you just knew were lurking in the dark, under your bed. Although most were just imaginary, there was that one time that a real noise jarred you awake and at that moment in time, your world stood still as you fought down panic only to later find it was the family cat who had quietly snuck in while you were taking a bath. Today, as a business owner, you can only imagine the security threats you face, some real, some maybe not. Massive Alliance, international cyber security firm, explains that those fears are most likely not so imaginary. Enter the Dark Web What most people don't know about the Internet is that there are two basic layers, which are actually comprised of other sub-layers, but for simplicity's sake there is the Surface Web and then there's the dreaded Dark Web. As you can imagine, the Dark Web is where the threats come from but what you may not imagine is just how big that layer really is. Did you know that the Surface Web, the web you go on every day to upload data to the Cloud where your employees access it only comprises .1% of the total Internet? No, you didn't read that wrong! The Dark Web and all its layers takes up the rest, which means pretty much all of it. So how can you fight that when the enemy so outnumbers you? What Goes on in the Dark? Here is where cyber security experts come into play. Brook Zimmatore, Founder and CEO of Massive Alliance says "Within the dark web there are layers upon layers of criminal depth. Much like the local student dealing at a party, versus a fully organized criminal cartel operation; in the underground there are lamers (fake hackers) and there are pros. Within these dark hacker communities, you primarily find signals of who the next victims will be or who was already hit. Information is valuable and the market places thrive off of current information and exploits. The trick in cyber security is the dissection and separation of valued information, which directly affects organizations now, against false positives which are historical or irrelevant. The key in this, to provide the most valuable cyber security intelligence, is the assignment of priorities on WHO, WHAT, WHERE and the ability to understand whether the threat actor in the dark web is discussing relevant information which is current to their target or not. This requires collaboration on a very intimate level between the company and their cyber security provider and has been the foundation of the Strixus cyber security monitoring system." Over the past few years, a variety of companies have developed what can almost be termed as a phobia of the dark web. However, the majority of this fear has come about due to the media and movies which have glamorized, and often exaggerated it. The Dark Web basically refers to online locations that cannot be found through search engines, often because they have been blacklisted for unethical activities. However, there are elements of the Dark Web that are frequented by black market traders and cyber criminals. The latter is what businesses should be looking out for. I Now Pronounce You Man and Machine With the advances in technology, Machine Learning has come a very, very long way. No, machines can't take the place of humans but there are some 'jobs' they can do at the speed of light which humans struggle to complete in a day or two. Because of this there is a marriage of man and machine that acts in tandem as one, just like in the traditional understanding of wedlock. Machine learning has made computers intelligent to the point that they are actually intuitive. They search and crawl and watch for red flags and that's where the human spouse begins his or her job. The machine is the hunter/gatherer partner while the human is the decision maker. The machine spots the cyber threat and the human decides what to do about it. Kill it or let it do its work? It may not be a threat at all. Truly this is a marriage made in heaven. Together man and machine are your best line of defense against a data breach because they work together to find and neutralize any and all threats. The one thing that you should always be aware of, though, is the fact that the Dark Web is very big. As a result, you need the efficiency and speed of a machine to scope out your threats by recognizing patterns that indicate that activity is indeed a threat. But, you also need a human to determine what to do about a threat if, indeed, it is a threat – and unfortunately, it probably is and if it is, within moments Massive Alliance will pick up the threat. Now it's up to you. What are you going to do about it?

  • 4 Snapchat Tricks from the Snapchat Masters

Snapchat, a mobile photo messaging and sharing app launched in 2011, has captured the attention of many people. Now, it rivals Facebook in terms of the number of views for user videos daily and is labeled as the fastest growing social app. While Snapchat is a fun app, it's known for having a slightly confusing UI, casually slipping in new features and hiding these additions in random setting locations. Therefore, it's highly possible that you've used the app for quite some time and still miss using a few filter or text tricks. To help you have a better Snapchat experience, here are some tips from the pros. 1. Text ---Adding Lines and Changing Text Sizes Have you reached the character limit? If you're normal Snapchat user, you would probably edit the text; however, there's a way for you to circumvent this limit. You can add more text by using the Notes app. The Notes app allows you to select a range of blank text. So, you have to copy that blank text to your clipboard, open Snapchat, and paste it into the text of field of a snap. If you wish to adjust the size of your text, you only have to click the T button and leave the cursor on the field. Then, use your two fingers to zoom in or out the text so as to change its size. 2. Screenshot---Making Copies of Snaps Like a Ninja Normally, when you screenshot a snap of your friends, they will be notified of your action. However, if you want to get a screenshot without them knowing in Snapchat, you can do one of the following tricks: If you're using an Android phone, make sure you have disabled travel mode first. Then, put it in saver mode. When you receive the snap, do not open it. Instead, swap right to chat and turn off your Wi-Fi. Be quick and open the snap. Take the screenshot and close the app. If you're using an iPhone, connect it to your Mac and open QuickTime Player. Go to Movie Recording and tap the drop down arrow to select your iPhone. Once that's done, you can view your iPhone's display. Go into Snapchat and swipe right to chat. Lastly, open the chat and click the record button on the QuickTime Player. 3. Chat---Video Calling and Recording With Snapchat 2.0, you can finally have a video call with your friends. All you have to do is to press the camera button, which you can find next to the round button in the middle. However, unlike other platforms, you can send each other text and add a sticker to adorn your virtual self. 4. Filter---Creating and Using Two at the Same Time Let's admit it. Snapchat has a lot of awesome filters. In fact, its filters are one of the main reasons for its success. However, it's entirely possible that you can't find the exact filter you want from the list that they offer, especially when you are snapchatting about a special event. In this case, you can create your own geofilter by going to the Snapchat website and uploading your own design. That design will be submitted to the Snapchat team and will be duly reviewed. On the other hand, if you can't decide between a geofilter and a Snapchat photo filter, you can simply choose both. To do so, swipe over the snap as you normally do in order to add the first filter. Then, hold the screen with one of your fingers and swipe the snap with another finger so you can add the second filter.

  • For The Mobile Gaming Inclined: What The Future Holds For Mobile Gamers

For those of us who are old enough, I am sure you can remember playing your favorite game on the Sega, Nintendo and Super Nintendo gaming consoles. Many of us were so delirious with excitement that we thought gaming could not get any better. In retrospect, it seems an extremely silly prediction. Even thought the game console world continues to advance and bring in new innovations, there is the undeniable fact that the bulk of subscribers are moving elsewhere – mobile gaming. I am sure a good number of us can remember playing Tetris (the pre smart phone version), Snake and some other old school games way back when on our phones. Well that is a story for the history books. The introduction and market penetration of smart phones has made it possible for mobile games to innovate, flourish and establish themselves as a bulwark of an industry. An industry that records serious yearly revenue and this only continues to grow. Earlier this year, Newzoo released the latest quarterly update of its Global Games Market Report. It projects that gamers the world over will amass a revenue of $99.6 billion in 2016 with 37% coming from mobile gaming. No doubt, mobile gaming is here to stay, the question is just how much will it affect us going forward? So if you are an avid gamer, here are a few things I believe the mobile gaming industry holds for your future as a gamer. 1. Streaming of mobile games will finally burst out of the blocks There are gamers and then there are those who get a kick out of watching games being played. Both parties are invaluable to the mobile gaming industry. However, the difficulties of streaming games online with mobile devices have impeded the growth of mobile game streaming. This is sure to change in the future – even now; steps have already been taken in that direction. The entrance of services such as MobCrush which allow for direct streaming from a mobile device and that will make it easier for gamers to be able to share what they are doing. This will consequently lead to an increase in the amount of mobile gaming content that is streamed. So hang on Youtubers and other streamers, things can only get better. 2. Revenue from mobile gaming will surpass that of console gaming Different statistical data have shown the inevitable - they have predicted that in the next couple of years the revenue generated from mobile gaming sales will surpass that from the console gaming segment. Newzoo's forecast for example predicts that in the year 2018, mobile gaming will make up 43% ($47.4bn of $112.5bn) of the total revenue of the global games market as compared to 27% for console gaming. Big Fish Games concurs by predicting revenue of about the same amount ($45billion) in 2018 for mobile gaming. They also say that in the same year, $4 from every $10 spent on gaming will be mobile. 3. Gradual but certain progress for mobile VR This is still in its infancy as there is still a lot to do for it to gain proper ground and establishment, but the possibilities are mouth watering. VR has already begun to show in glimpses what it has to offer to the world of gaming. This is more obvious when you realize some of the tech and IT industry that have invested heavily in it. Companies like Facebook and Sony own arguably the biggest names in the world of VR technology right now and are poised to deliver crazy innovation to us in the not too distant future. The application of VR extends far beyond the gaming industry but games I think will always be its greatest area of application. One way this will happen is that VR companies will begin to look into ways to sufficiently integrate VR technology with mobile gaming seeing as it is the fastest growing gaming segment in the industry. As this integration becomes more apparent we will see game developers of all sorts of games – from action and puzzle games to different kinds online casino games – begin to tap into this innovation to give their subscribers the ultimate real world gaming experience. 4. All games will attain mobility In the year 2015, Sony and Microsoft announced that console gamers would now have the option to play their PS4 and Xbox One games on their laptops and PCs. Furthermore, PC games gained the ability to literally 'move' from the computer screens to any TV of the gamers' choice, thanks to the low cost Steam Link TV dongle. And with the impending increase in the role mobile videos will play in the streaming of PC and console games, it is safe to say that the gaming culture is going to become increasingly mobile. 5. Gaming giant firms will come into the mobile gaming industry Traditional gaming giants such as Sony and Nintendo are likely to take their first steps into the mobile gaming industry. And with the multi-billion dollar purchase by Activision's Blizzard, the competition is sure to heat up in the near future. All these companies are sure to portray some really beautiful and healthy rivalry that will see the gaming industry not only mature but also become more and more innovative, gamer addictive and consequently bring in more revenue. However, this will mean some heavy financing from each of these gaming behemoths. It is left to them to make sure that this entry does not end up threatening their industry standing.

  • Android Devices at Risk - Bug Fear in about 900 Million Phones

As per reports from Security firm Check Point, they have recognized bugs which are affecting around 900 million tablets and smartphones which utilize chipsets from Qualcomm, they component maker. It was on Sunday in Las Vegas that Check Point revealed such occurence of vulnerabilities at the DEF CON 24 hacking conference. Check Point has given the name QuadRooter to the 4 different vulnerabilities and these are all set to affect Android devices which use chipsets from Qualcomm. If you're not aware of what chipsets are, they are collections of circuits which tackle the flow of data within the device. Amongst the QuadRooter, if any one of them is exploited, the bug attacker could receive access to your Android device, as explained in a blog post by Check Point. They also add that any device using such chipsets is at risk of being attacked by these bugs. Malicious apps exploit the chipset software drivers If there's an attack, it could abuse the susceptibility in the software driver of the chipset by utilizing some harmful app. However, Check Point also adds that as the drivers are usually installed in the device since its inception or since its manufacture, they can even be fixed by downloading a patch from the carrier or distributor. This situation brings light to the fact that there are too many security issues in the operating system of Google's Android. Crucial security updates should be passed through the total supply chain before they are offered to the end-users. Once such important updates are available, users shouldn't forget to update them to safeguard their data and their Android devices. Addressing the vulnerabilities As per what a spokesperson of Check Point said to a popular news site, there is still no proof that QuadRooter is being used in a cyberattacks and at the same time he also added that only 3-4 critical patches of QuadRooter have been fixed forever. A person from Google has appreciated the research from Check Point and he said that it assisted in enhancing the safety of the entire mobile ecosystem. Hence, Android electronic devices, through the recent security patch level have been safeguarded against 3 of the 4 bugs in question. The 4th bug, CVE-2016-5340 will be very soon addressed in a forthcoming security bulletin of Android. Google has noticed that their Android partners are taking quick and prompt actions by referring to a 'public patch' which is offered by Qualcomm. Qualcomm reported that they were informed about the bugs during February, 2016 and April and by the time they formed patches for all the 4 bugs between the months of April and July. Which devices are going to be at risk? Now that you're aware of this shocking android news, you must be wondering about the devices which comprise of this chipset technology. Some such devices are Google Nexus 5X, BlackBerry Priv, Nexus 6P, Nexus 6 and Galaxy's S7 Edge and S7, as per what Check Point reports. BlackBerry is pretty aware of the flaws and bugs of QuadRooter which are having a bad impact on Android devices. A solution for the Android devices of BlackBerry was tested in their labs soon after they were notified about the cyber attacks. They even relayed the information to the customers too so that they don't fall in trouble. Samsung hasn't yet commented on this story and Check Point is providing the users with a free scanner app from QuadRooter through which they can scan their devices and know about their susceptibility. Android manufacturers are improving their efforts around mobile phone security and they are not unveiling devices with iris-scanning technology to ramp up security issues.

  • 6 Valuable Lessons that Every Business Can Learn from Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go is the number 1 mobile app now and the craze around it is showing its huge potential. The game has been wildly popular in the U.S in a less than a day since its launch. According to Similar Web, website traffic statistic website, users are spending more than 10 minutes a day longer on Pokémon Go than on WhatsApp, Instagram and Snapchat. The app beat even Twitter on number of daily active users. While your business may not be in the business of making cute little beasties for people to collect and fight, there's no doubt you'd love to be able to tap into some of the same virality and success this already iconic game has seen. So, here are some valuable lessons your business can take away from Pokémon Go. Apps Bring in Unexpected New Audiences Pokémon as a franchise has been around for 20 years, in the form of games for Nintendo consoles like the Game Boy and DS, a trading card game, a TV series and movies. However popular as the brand has been since its inception, it was never as widespread a phenomenon as it has become since Pokémon Go launched on Android and iOS. Because everyone has a phone and therefore can easily get the game for free. This is a whole new audience that would not have necessarily gotten interested in the Pokémon brand before. What you can take away from this is that an app can be seen as an efficient way to reach unexpected new audiences. Social Doesn't Just Mean Social Media One of the things people are talking about the most since the start of the Pokémon Go craze is how it brings people together. Because the game requires people to go to certain places in the real world, it means all kinds of different people have made new friends or at least had some fun conversations due to meeting other players out and about. The reason this is such a big talking point is that there has been so much focus on online social networking and making the most of the online connections of customers, that this now seems like a new idea – getting people to meet socially in the real world. What you can take away from this is that you can look at your 'social' strategy in a different way, including not only online and social media but also combining things that are social and extending them into the real world. Host a party, go to more trade shows, sponsor live events – whatever you choose, consider that things which bring people together in person and think how you can connect all the people offline and call to action, for example with the help of mobile app. Cutting-Edge Technology Can Quickly Go Mainstream Latest technologies are always very powerful in shaping the world. However, it is not easy for companies to be the early adopters in bringing disruptive technologies to the marketplace, but it pays off because the latest technologies usually create lots of buzz and hit big with the global audiences. The game shows that AR can impact consumer behavior if companies use it correctly — in this case, through the innovative use of AI, geolocation, gamification, and entertainment. "Pokémon Go represents a perfect case when a cutting-edge technology emerges from a niche one to a significant tool that offers businesses a new way to improve customer experiences. Embedding AR into mobile applications is one tactic among many to improve mobile apps in 2016, as long as the experience drives the simplicity, and context that consumers need." says Alex Kharchyshyn, CEO of The App Solutions, US-based app development company. AR should be treated as an opportunity to improve customer experience and offer new ways to view and buy products. In order to successfully leverage the full potential of AR in your app, the experts from The App Solutions recommend consider using AR in your mobile solution only if you can integrate it into the customer journey and it offers users real advantage. To define and accomplish a major problem of your target audience with the help of the latest technology like AI, ask yourself the following questions: What is the best possible way to show the content of your app to the user? How should the users interact with content and information through all the important touch points of the business and its offerings? Free Apps Can Be Highly Lucrative We already know that Pokémon Go has hit the top of the App Store's top-grossing charts. Despite being a free app it's already making more money than any other app there. The game has a freemium business model, which means that users can download and use the app for free but have to make in-app purchases for some premium features, content, or goods. But in order to get profits from a freemium, the app should be really popular, as Phil Libin, Evernote founder said: "The easiest way to get one million people paying is to get one billion people using." It's interesting that Miitomo, Nintendo's previous mobile app also had a freemium monetization model but it failed to be profitable. So, what if the right business conditions for a freemium model to drive revenue faster than any other paid-only model? The secret behind monetization of Pokémon Go is that your behaviour and a lot of the actions you have to do in the game, motivates you to make a payment in a plenty of ways. You are tempted to increase the capture sessions, pay for Incense to make more Pokémon appear outside of the usual spots, Lucky Eggs to boost your XP. Within Go you can pay even for your laziness if you are not willing to do any actions to search for a PokeStop. Engagement is the shortest path to app monetization and if you make the users enjoy an app, they are bound to invest in the paid features. User Retention Can Be Reached Via Loyalty An app like Pokémon Go can grab user's attention immediately and increase user involvement by sending timely alerts of nearby Pokémon using push notifications, which is a proven way to retain and engage users. "Integrating push notifications into your app is an efficient tool to easily boost users' loyalty simply by notifying about important updates or special rewards and bonuses awaiting for them", says Alex Kharchyshyn, CEO of The App Solutions. In addition, Pokemon Go app shows how to fulfill users' needs quickly and easily, which is a must for creating a loyalty. While lot of companies try to offer "exceptional" service or tools, according to the research from the authors of The Effortless Experience, the true driver of loyalty is the ease of getting a problem solved. If we look at Pokemon Go app, it focuses on consistently meeting expectations, making the experience smooth, avoiding unpleasant surprises in usage and rewarding the customers for investing money in making in-app purchases. Success-ready mindset improves your business Pokémon Go surprised everyone, including its own developers and backers, by growing so quickly and becoming such a massive success. Unfortunately, this meant that the people behind the game were not really prepared, and had to take action to actually limit its initial user base. This meant that people around the world were clamoring for a product they could only find in the US and Australia. Releases in the other parts of the world had to be delayed for several days and even weeks. Additionally, although players have been tolerating the problems, the game suffers from some serious issues due to the server overload. What you can learn from this is that you should have a strategy to cope with a sudden growth, even if you don't expect it. Whether it is making sure your website could cope with an escalation in demand by using cloud hosting or by considering what you will do if an event you plan sees huge demand for tickets, consider what you have to do if huge success actually does come knocking, so you never have to turn people away! These are some lessons about the phenomenon of this summer, Pokémon Go, that can teach us something new about the business. The app proves that masses love cutting-edge interactive technology, which enhances the real world, has challenging but achievable goals and rewards them. It teaches us to think outside of the existing paradigm of building applications – and there's a lot more businesses can do to engage their customers and increase their loyalty. Silly or not, but Pokémon Go set some more new rules for businesses and they should follow suit.

  • Wearable Technology and Personal Injury Claims - Standing At the Crossroads of Life

In the year 2016, advancements with regards to wearable technology is moving at a fast pace. We keep consuming information and organizing our lives with the few smart devices which we have near us. We all know that our smart devices can easily perform some impressive functions but do we actually realize how smart they are and what their advanced capabilities are? It is true how wearable technology has found its way into our lives and has become an inseparable part of our life. Irrespective of whether you're the owner of an Apple Watch or a Fitbit, majority of us are living with some or the other kind of wearable gadget. At the same time in the world of personal injury law, wearable tech can become one of the most vital elements in giving justice to all those who have already become victims. Did you ever meet with an accident wearing your smartwatch? If answered yes, then it may just assist you in validating your claim. With the rising popularity of wearable technology, each and every movement of ours is constantly being recorded digitally and such recordings may play a huge role in identifying the culprit who is at fault during an event of personal injury. Oculus Rift – Is it fraught with risk? Oculus Rift is a gaming tool which is owned by Facebook and this product is in the market for a few hundred dollars. This product is primarily used by the content developers who want to develop virtual environment and games for their products. If you search on Google you will see some videos where the device's capability of creating video-game scenarios virtually is shown. The testers and developers are seen to be losing balance and falling when they stand up while using this object and they've also accidentally hit an object which is no longer visible to them after they wear the headset. The impact of Oculus Rift is definitely fraught with risks of different kinds. You can definitely lose track of your objects kept near you and gamers who utilize the device may even experience disorientation, involuntary movements and nausea too. An expert personal injury lawyer, Michael Ehline said that there can be no debate on the fact that such wearable technologies are sophisticated, incredible and beneficial too but there is also a legal chance that there are many kinds of dangers associated. Google Glass – Is there a potential for an impact on personal injury cases? Google Glass existed for nearly 2 hours now but it has got a number of lifestyle applications. Google Glass can perform a wide array of things and hence a California based attorney who uses it believes that it has got a strong potential for having a considerable impact on such cases of personal injury situations. He too claims that the Google Glass could offer evidence to clarify in case of requirement by a witness testimony. Right now he is using this to record depositions and interviews for clients in the courtroom. Various exercise monitors like Fitbit Wearable tracking devices are one more kind of wearable tech which has caught the eyes of the entire legal industry. There's one attorney in a personal injury case who has been hoping to use Fitbit data to establish the injury effects which had been troubling the client. Such devices are able to transmit the heart rate of a person, his activity levels throughout the day, distance traveled and sleeping habits. Fitbit can even supervise the intensity or the level of activity which you measure at any point of time. One of the million-dollar questions is that whether or not courts will allow the disclosure of information from such high-tech devices. The data retrieved from such gadgets will have enough capability to hinder some cases significantly but whether or not it can remain private is still to be seen.

  • Social Media and Technology Share a Symbiotic Relationship - The Future Foresees Enough Dependence

From smartphones to Facebook, advancements in technology are entirely changing the way we communicate with each other and work. An eminent expert went through a research on the revolution brought about by technology and its implications in the near future. The key concepts included a potential growth throughout the world and the primary point being bridging the gap between the digital and the physical worlds. For instance, it remains pretty tough to determine the particular intention of consumers on the web. All that people want is technology which is simple to use. Televisions connected to the internet, social media and the extreme power of simplicity were considered as launch pads for innovation in future, as per a panel of experts of Harvard Business School. Though it is a fact that advertisers love the Internet, to what extent they can capitalize on such transformations is still an open question. The evolving landscape – Interdependence between technology and social media This is an indeed evolving landscape where there is much more growth to come. Among 6.5 billion people in the world, around 1.5 billion have access to the internet and more than 300 million have access to broadband at home. 3 billion have mobile phones, an increasing number of which have access to internet. What do you learn from this statistic? That the most valuable currency among the present generation is Information! Each year there is more and more information created on the web than all the previous years and all such investment initiatives hover around participating in the flow of information. Investors are interested in companies which help them understand how they can structure information, categorize and communicate some of the self-generated information and then act on it. Sleeping aside your cell phone Though it is true that technology is having a huge influence on society but at the same time it is also true that society is continuously making demands on technology. The way we love people, live our lives, communicate with other and work will have an impact on technology and the greater is the population, the more will be the level of control. It has been seen that 15% of the newlyweds met online. Among the US users, half of them sleep with their cell phone by their side and married couples on the other hand don't share their mobile phones. In what way social connections will increase dollars is yet to be seen. There are search engines like Yahoo which comprise of certain premium services which require subscriptions and fees and the largest business model so far has been advertising. It is a $50 billion industry working globally which has been growing by 30% every year. Advertisers can reach out to great scale and hence advertising on the web can be extremely effective. Internet and Television On the other hand, there has been mounting pressure on the merging of internet and television as consumers nowadays expect internet to be everywhere with advertising and entertainment implications. For around 90 years now, television has always been a 1-way device but now time has come that it should be a 2-way device. While TV prices are plummeting, they are leaving an opportunity for the internet to hurt both the content industry and the value chain. Emerging markets drive the potential for growth of such innovations combining the television and the internet which seems to be a low-cost way of engaging with the internet. Companies will find out ways in which they can utilize whichever social media network you're in and you too should use those networks which are easy for you to access. Opt for simplicity as this is the main thing which people want. Technology will make things faster and you will get more interconnections and opportunities.

  • Technologyand Teachers;an Inseparable Pairin Language Learning

Almost all type of language teaching has had its own technologies to support it. The blackboard was a ubiquitous technology that was used by language teachers in the U.S. education system. The blackboard was later supplemented by the overhead projector, another excellent medium for the teacher-dominated classroom, as well as by early computer software programs which provided what were known as "drill-and-kill" grammatical exercises. In the 70s and 80s, the audio-tape became the widely accepted technology popularly known as the audio-lingual method (which emphasized learning through oral repetition). University language classes in those days usually included obligatory sessions at the audio lab where students would perform the not-so-fantastic repetition drills. Towards the late 70s, the audio-lingual method was marred with negative reviews, at least in part due to poor results achieved from expensive language laboratories. In all ramifications, repetitive drills that focused only on language form and ignored communicative meaning achieved poor results. The 80s and 90s saw a shift towards communicative language teaching, which emphasized student engagement in authentic, meaningful interaction. Within this general communicative trend, two distinct perspectives were noted, both of which have their implications in terms of how to best integrate technology into the classroom. Coming to where we are today, evolving technology has further made language teaching and learning more effective and hands-on. There is no longer need to make the case for computers to be provided in education, because computers are there in abundance in all their modern forms. We may see traditional computers in labs, teachers and students walking around with laptops or tablet PCs, and many people will have a mobile phone in their pocket that is capable of doing rather more than the mainframe computers that started computer-assisted language learning in the 60s. Today, it is rare to find a language class that does not use some form of technology. Technology has been used to both assist and enhance language learning. Teachers at K-16 levels have incorporated various forms of technology to support their teaching, engage students in the learning process, provide authentic examples of the target culture, and connect their classrooms in their country to classrooms in other countries where the target language is spoken. It suffices to say at this point that technology plays an important role in supporting and enhancing language learning. However, the effectiveness of any technological tool depends on the knowledge and expertise of the qualified language teacher who manages and facilitates the language learning environment. In some cases, school and university administrators have permitted technology to drive the language curriculum and have even used it to replace certified language teachers. Language technology companies as Panorama Languages have made unsubstantiated claims about their products' abilities to help students learn languages, thus confusing administrators into thinking that these technologies can be an effective cost-cutting measure. There is currently no definitive research to indicate that students will acquire a second language effectively through technology without interaction with and guidance from a qualified language teacher. In as much as we are in a more technologically advanced age, there is still need to provide guidance to students in the use and application of technological devices when it comes to language learning. The use of technology should never be the goal in itself, but rather it should be a tool for helping language learners to use the target language in culturally appropriate ways to accomplish authentic tasks. Further, all language learning opportunities whether provided through technology or in a traditional classroom setting, should be standard-based and help develop students' proficiency in the target language through interactive, meaningful, and cognitively engaging learning experiences, facilitated by a qualified language teacher. This recommendation comes strongly as a result of the following downsides: Monetary Issues Whatever results that may be achieved over the long term, there are definite start-up expenses related to implementing new technologies in education. For college language learning programs, such expenses usually entail hardware, software, staffing, and training for at least one networked computer laboratory where students can drop in and use assigned software and one or more networked computer laboratories where teachers can bring whole classes on an occasional or regular basis. Time Factor There is increased demands on time due in part to the difficulty of using new online multimedia technologies in their still-early stages. However, time demands are caused not only from learning how to master the technology, but also from the changing dynamics of the online classroom. Undoubtedly, new technologies create excellent opportunities for long-distance exchanges, but such exchanges can be extremely complicated in terms of coordinating goals, schedules, and plans, especially when involving teachers from different countries or educational systems. Uncertainties There is no single predictable outcome for using computers, anymore than there is for using books or libraries. Thus teachers and institutions are expected to invest large amounts of time and money without any guarantee of achieving particular results. As technology advances, the role of language teachers should not be overlooked. As much as technology plays a huge role, teachers also contribute to effective language study.

  • Ransomware - The Black Plague of the Internet

Ransomware is one of the most common and by far the most dangerous of all cyber threats that plague the vast plains of the almighty Internet. Its stealth and the incredible difficulty of tracing the criminals behind it are responsible for making it the most feared type of computer virus ever. What this malware does is sneakily infiltrate one's PC, exploiting vulnerabilities in the system or alternatively employing the help of a Trojan horse virus for the purpose, after which it proceeds to encrypt some of the files stored on said computer. Once the encryption is complete, the virus places a ransom note on the victim's screen. The note typically aims to inform the user of the encryption process that had taken place, as well as emphasize on the fact that the coded files will remain inaccessible until a certain amount (ransom) is paid to the hackers in return for a decryption key, which is essentially needed in order to decrypt those files. On some occasions the ransomware might even attempt to impersonate legal authorities, claiming that the files have been suspended due to allegedly detected criminal or other illegal activities on that computer. The ransom would in such a case be called a fine or similar, all in order to scare the user into falling for the scam and transferring the demanded money. As pointed out, the ransomware threat has become so huge over recent years because of how difficult it is to track down the hackers, who actually benefit from it. This is true because of the payment methods they demand victims use to transfer the ransom: bitcoins. The popular cryptocurrency is notoriously elusive and thanks to this fact cybercriminals are capable of making millions of dollars in ransom money. To be precise, the FBI has estimated that a whopping $18 million are lost to ransomware by both businesses and private persons alike every week. And, as sad as it is, there's little to no getting around it without paying the hackers, as files that have been encrypted by the latest versions of ransomware viruses are not susceptible to decryption via brute force algorithms. In fact, according to a recent survey of tech specialists in the UK, entire companies in the country are stocking up on bitcoins in case of a potential infection with a cryptovirus. That knowledge alone is not only frightening, it's indicative of how increasingly helpless we, as a society, are becoming in the face of this global cyber threat. But ransomware isn't only limited to targeting separate computers. It's evolved to the point, where entire websites and web servers can fall victim to this menace. A ransomware virus could infect a host-machine, from which it would begin encrypting all of the files on a given website: the images, databases, code libraries, etc. As a result, the website becomes effectively unusable. The CTB-Locker virus is a striking example of this type of website-locking malware. Viruses of this type exploit security holes in the web server and usually tend to be of political character, as opposed to attacking random enterprises. And speaking of enterprises, they are becoming an ever more appetizing target for cybercriminals, for obvious reasons. Businesses are more likely to pay larger amounts, as the information they could potentially lose to a ransomware infection could render them bankrupt or severely incapacitated. One such infamous perpetrator that made the news headlines and ended up costing organizations quite the pretty penny was the Cerber Ransomware. And to show just how diverse this dark side of programming can get, the recent outbreak of the Zepto Virus, which was a direct continuation of the infamous Locky virus campaign, left the affected users unsure of which of their files were which and where they were placed. The Zepto ransomware scrambled the names of the files, as if encrypting them weren't enough, in order to make sure the victims could not determine which of the encoded data was actually important to them and which they could have gone without recovering. Another crucial component, as mentioned earlier, to the unheard of success that ransomware is currently enjoying is the fact that most times it goes completely undetected. This is largely due to the fact that modern versions of the cryptovirus have already bypassed the need their predecessors had of client-server communications. Today they can run autonomously on the victim's computer, which has greatly contributed to them being able to avoid bot prevention mechanisms and detection in general. The Bart Ransomware was among the first to introduce this concept, but though this may sound very sophisticated, its encryption methods were surprisingly simple. Instead of using some elaborate mechanisms, Bart simply placed the affected files in separate password protected zip archives. But so far we've only recounted versions of ransomware that all share the same trait: they encrypt specific files, like pictures or documents, which is all very mild and tame in comparison to one particular version that doesn't play nice at all. The Petya virus blatantly encrypts your entire hard drive, without burdening itself with the task of distinguishing various file types. With all that fear-inducing information it's important to use it to your benefit, rather than succumb to an attack you allowed to occur due to lack of knowledge on the matter. What's more, the measures necessary to prevent such an infection are so fundamentally simple that literally anyone and everyone should be able to apply them. For starters, you can make regular backups, be it on external drives or clouds, of all your important data. This way, even if your computer does fall prey to the dreadful malware – it won't really do you much harm. Building up your barriers, you should always keep your eyes peeled for software updates. Sadly, many people neglect the need to update the programs on their devices, but these are vital moments and ought to be treated as such. Software developers come up with constant updates for a reason: it's to fix existing vulnerabilities within the given program; vulnerabilities that ransomware could potentially exploit to enter your machine. And finally, as ransomware is very often downloaded on a computer by a Trojan horse that was programmed to do so, it's important to pay close attention to incoming emails, especially those containing attachments. If for whatever reason you see a given email as suspicious, it's best to avoid opening it at all. Preventing the problem is always a hundred times better than dealing with its consequences.

  • 6 Ways Technology Has and Will Continue To Transform The Banking Industry

Since the emergence of the internet, a lot has changed in the way we carry out our daily activities. Prior to the internet, we had to send letters to people across the globe via the post offices, and then we would wait for weeks to hear back from them. Now we have email. We used to have to always go to a brick and mortar store to do our shopping; now we have e-commerce. Where it concerns banking transactions, we used to have to visit the bank to deposit, withdraw, check balance and transfer money to someone else; now we have internet banking. A lot really has changed but the truth is the banking still has a lot to do to make sure they remain relevant in the future. The emergence of other technologically oriented financial services such as PayPal, Western Union and Bit Coin are not making things easier for the banking industry. Frankly speaking, they are a direct competition/threat to the industry. I for one would love to see the banking industry embrace technological advancements to the fullest so they stay relevant. Here are a few ways that the banking industry has, and I believe, will continue to embrace technological advancement. 1. Banks should continue to hire tech-savvy staff The time when being financially savvy was all the qualification one needed to gain employment in a bank is long gone. As digital technology continues to take over our world and our lives, it is becoming increasing apparent that the guy with nothing but financial know-how will not survive the inevitable evolution of the banking industry. As banking activities continue to be adapted so that they are carried out through digital channels, it will consequently present new kind of problems that only the digitally savvy will be able to answer. The Lubbock Bank in Texas, as at last year had already started to ask different kinds of questions while seeking to hire new staff. Questions, for example, that seek to find out a potential customer service reps mobile preferences. 2. Banks will seek to connect their different channels Even though internet banking has made banking experience a lot less tedious and a lot more pleasurable, there is still the problem of too many channels. Many banks still have different channels for different banking activities, from internet banking, to customer service, to accessing of grants and business loans amongst other things. A good number of banks across the globe have already taken steps to connect their varied channels together to give the feel and experience of an omnichannel. More and more banks will continue to invest heavily to improve customer relations across their different channels. They will seek to get closer to the point where customers can begin their research on the internet and wrap up a deal in a branch without having to jump from place to place across the web. 3. Training of employees will utilize the power of digital technology With the increasing influence of digital technology on our lives, it is getting harder to argue against the fact that visual education is the best form of learning. This is by no means a move to discredit the conventional method of learning via text (books and manuals). They have certainly held their ground for a long time. But take a look at where we are headed as a society and you will agree that it can no longer meet the ever increasing demands of efficient and effective education on its own. Tom Kunz, the head of digital banking for PNC Banks says that instead of learning on the job or by reading of manuals, bank employee training should be facilitated by the use of highly visual content. This shift in how we communicate information will certainly work well for the younger generation of bank employees who grew up with Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. 4. Technology will enable banks to be open 24/7 John Schulte, Chief Information Officer at Mercantile Bank has this to say, "Having a bank that's wherever you are, open all the time, and offering you convenient, fast and more intelligent ways to manage your money resonates strongly with consumers" Innovations in mobile and internet banking will continue to increase exponentially. More so where it concerns offering more personalized support (such as a video chat with a customer service rep) or developments around mobile wallets and e-payments, the simplification of cumbersome processes(like opening an account) and the use of smarter device capabilities (like finger print ID and location based information dissemination). This will gradually dispel the idea of banking services that absolutely require your physical presence in the banking hall before they can be carried out. It also implies that banks will be open 24 hours a day. 5. Banks will continue to invest in digital technology startups/projects They have and will continue to do this because many times, digital technology startups have often come up with solutions to problems in the banking industry. I am talking specifically about digital technology startups that concentrate on financial services. Another path to tow would be to organize and setup projects/competitions for digitally savvy entrepreneurs/individuals to prove their mettle. They often will come up with some seriously innovative solutions to banking and financial operations that even the banks may not have fully realized yet. This is explained in simple terms by Accenture: "The fact remains that innovative start-ups have a high innovation quotient, but need capital, and established financial services firms have lots of capital, but need to increase their ability to innovate." It should be noted, however that banks do not become innovative themselves by investing in innovation. Also the bank's investment does not somehow guarantee access to or the ability of the bank to utilize said technology. What this implies is that the bank's investment is not the only prerequisite needed to propel banking into the digital age, but it is and will always remain a key supporting element.

  • From Concept To Reality: 6 Smart Car Technologies Every Geek Would Love To See In The Future

There was a time when driving was just that – driving. All you had to do was step into the driver's seat, turn on the ignition and move from start point to destination. That was the sole purpose of a vehicle; to move a person from point A to point B. Then as advancements in technology began to take over the world, innovations that were probably thought impossible were gradually introduced into our world. The drive to make inventions better, faster, more efficient, easier to use became the order of the day. This naturally passed on into the automobile industry as well. I am convinced that even Henry Ford, if he were alive today, would marvel at the astronomical advancements that the industry has made. And yet there is a nagging feeling that this is just the beginning. Automobile companies such as Toyota, Nissan and Jaguar have in the recent past developed technology for the automobile industry, most of which is still considered ahead of its time. For now, a lot of these ideas are bottled up in concept cars and limited edition vehicle models and that will suffice – for now. But as the demand for overall better driving experience grows, a lot of these ideas will have to enter the commercial vehicle scene. Make no mistake about it, this will alter the way we do things significantly. So are you a speedster who loves to feel the wind in your hair while you ride with the top down? Are you a tech geek who is more interested in the features of the vehicle than the actual driving? Here are some tech advancements in the auto industry that I am sure we would all like to see – and probably might – in the not too distant future. 1. Self-healing paint Imagine you are trying to navigate your way into a tight parking space when another driver cuts in front of you to take the spot, grazing your car in the process. You step out to confront him about it and after a few minutes of heated verbal exchange you invite him to come inspect the car accident he had almost caused. And what do you see? Nothing! Not a scratch! That is actually good news, regardless of the embarrassment you must be feeling at that moment. What if there was a technology that could make surface marks and scratches on your vehicle disappear? Well, there is – just not in consumer cars yet. This is a really cool technology; scratches on your car heal themselves in a few minutes and the car looks as good as new. Well, almost as good as new. In reality, scratches that go deeper than the surface are not 100% healed. Some of them will still be visible if you look really hard but you certainly will not notice the difference when viewing from a distance. 2. Camouflage paint I am sure many of us have a favorite color while some others just cannot seem to pick one color over the other. They want every color in every shade, brightness and contrast setting of your choice. Now imagine a vehicle that can do just that; change to any color you choose. There would have to be a control on the dashboard of the vehicle to allow you choose from a wealth of color options. It could go a step further to enable you mix colors and to suggest colors for you depending on what time of the day it is. Generally, it would suggest darker colors in the day to offset the harshness/brightness in the daytime. And lighter colors at night to optimize your vehicles' visibility. That last one is indirectly a safety future and that is really cool if you ask me. 3. Perfect maneuverability Being the owner of a high end 6m long, luxury sedan does not seem you somehow get to live 'above traffic problems'. If I get stuck in traffic with my mini-cooper you can be assured that you will too. Heck, I would have a better chance at maneuvering my tiny cooper out of traffic than you will with your six feet long behemoth of a vehicle. This is a very obvious problem with most luxury cars. They are big, imposing and often find it difficult to navigate through spaces. Rolls Royce is working to make sure that this is a non-issue in the not too distant future. Enter the futuristic 2030 Rolls Royce Eidolon concept car. This concepts car dispels the problem of maneverablilty in cars without having to reduce its size. It does this with the omni wheel technology. With this technology, your luxury car will be able to make a turn on a radius much smaller than the standard 11m for sedans. It would be able to make a turn on a dime is what I am saying. This technology basically offers the freedom of movement of the car in any direction. 4. Autonomous driving system Another feature the above mentioned Rolls Royce concept car offers is the autonomous driving technology. In truth this is not really a new idea; it has been around for a while but just as an idea. A car with complete autonomous driving system will only require you to get in and take a seat. The vehicle does the rest. I can imagine very busy Fortune 500 CEOs and Wall Street veterans going for this feature. They will be able to get a lot of work done in this kind of car because they will not have to worry about the actual driving. A self-driving car might be ahead of its time now, but the future does hold a lot of promise for this technology. However, I doubt that there will ever be a completely autonomous car without the option for a passenger to take control. This will mean that in the case of an accident, the liability will fall on the manufacturer. 5. Body panel batteries If you've ever owned an electric vehicle, then you should know how how heavy and bulky the batteries are. The size and number of batteries an electric needs poses a problem for the design group of any auto manufacturing company. They have the task of ensuring that the batteries are kept in a suitable place while maintaining a perfect balance throughout the length of the car. So think of this. What if there was technology that could create more space for passenger and cargo by hiding the batteries in plain sight. I am talking of sheet thin batteries. I am asking what if the body panels of the car on both the interior and exterior were the batteries themselves. The batteries, since they are the body panels of the car would be sheet thin and bendable. This means that manufacturers would no longer have to compromise on the structure of the car. Technologically, we are still a ways from this but it is definitely something that I, for one would be looking forward to. 6. Pure oxygen emissions Environmentalists would absolutely love this one. No carbon emissions, just pure oxygen. Sadly, this one is extra futuristic. Funny to think that in the future cars will join in the battle against global warming. Cars without carbon emissions automatically translate to availability of fresher air to breathe. Mercedes Biome, an upcoming natural smart car technology is already looking into the possibility of having such vehicles by say 2050. This is one I think every car owner will appreciate, regardless of what you drive.

  • Augmented Reality Is Making a Comeback

Augmented reality (AR) and its application in the real word looked certain to go mainstream with the release of Google Glass a few years ago as it promised users a variety of truly immersive experiences from real-time language translation to an efficient way for students to engage with new material. However, Google's Glass project was sent back to the lab and the focus has shifted from mainstream to enterprisebut AR is the future and here are just a few predictions on how AR will change our lives: Digital Marketing: AR appears to the missing link in digital marketing, as it enables customers to engage with a product/service at home, in store or on-demand. So often, product packaging was an afterthought, with focus instead on the product (and rightly so), yet augmented packaging allows customers to interact with a product in a whole new way. Recently, the creator of Angry Birds, Rovio, partnered with an augmented reality firm in order to make the game relevant not only on mobile and the big screen but also to our surroundings. Using Augmented Reality "birdCodes" in stores and on merchandise packaging, enables the Angry Birds fan base to unlock mini games, power boosts and other special content in the Angry Birds Action! App. More importantly, by partnering with Lego, McDonald's, Walmart, H&M and PEZ among others, Rovio has been able extend the Angry Birds brandto coincide with those products/services that we tend to consume on a daily a basis, be it happy meals for our kids from McDonalds or apparel from H&M. Rovio may be one of the early adopters in weaving this technology into their advertising campaigns but it may not be long until we see an increase of augmented packaging on street marketing, geo-localized apps and interactive consumer products as businesses leverage the technology in an attempt to make their products/services ubiquitous. E-commerce: E-commerce sales continues to dominate traditional retail store sales but one of the reservations for online consumers is the cumbersome process involved when purchasing items such as apparel as the convenience of using a fitting room to check whether a particular item of apparel fits well is difficult to replicate in the digital world. Sure, some online retailers such as those specialising in footwear have tried to bridge the gap by allowing you to send it your current pair of footwear with the aim of matching the size and fit with your online order but it isn't as seamless as the retail experience. Consequently, retailers are turning to AR to create virtual fitting rooms, where apparel can be tried on live, yet it doesn't only apply to apparel as customers can get a feel for how furniture or household electronics would look in their home too. Education: There have been numerous calls for the implementation of technology in classrooms to engender a richer learning environment for our students, and help them grasp concepts much quicker than simply reading a text from a book. Weaving AR with traditional education encourages students to engage with a topic at a deeper level as the text or image is transformed into dynamic, 3D graphics. The most banal subjects you may have studied at college such as Finance, which usually involves analysing balance sheets and company reports to form a strong investment thesis could be far more captivating with application of AR. Better yet, It is scientifically proven that the more senses we use whenever we attempt to learn new material, the easier it is to remember. Medical, Military and Industrial: While the thought of applying AR technology in the military might conjure up images of 'the terminator', a half human half borg solider, there appears to be numerous practical applications, particularly for soldiers, as AR enables them to obtain information about their surroundings or receive detailed 3D maps. In the Medical industry the use of AR is a no brainer as aspiring medical students such as trainee surgeons get the opportunity to embed procedural techniques to memory, and familiarizethemselves with their working environment not by watching from a distance but by seeing operations from the surgeon's perspective. This is critical as surgery has always been learnt through apprenticeships in which students spend countless hours in an operating theatre to get quality training from a mentor. Many believe that the future of medical training involves a combination of AR and Virtual Reality (VR) in order to create full surgical simulations with audio, visual and tactile feedback, thus, whenever a new procedure is performed on a person it won't be a totally new experience for a medical professional as he/she has previously performed it in a simulated setting. The potential advantages of using AR in the engineering industry is one of the hottest topics of debate at the moment as occupations that rely on crucial information could implement Augmented Reality tools to visually impose their solutions. One such use case is for Engineers, who have to browse through a ton of information e.g. specifications sheets or numerous databases, yet this could be a thing of the past as AR has the potential to make the world around them, the database. Time will tell whether the majority people in the world warm up to the idea of viewing the real world with a virtual overlay but what is certain is that the practical applications of AR are undeniable, perhaps in a few years' time this article may be brought to life with dynamic 3D graphics, now that would be awesome!

  • Best Single Board Computers 2016: The Tech Giving Raspberry Pi a Run for Its Money

When the first Raspberry Pi was released in 2012, it completely changed everything we knew about computing. Personal computers were once seen as an expensive piece of technology, however, the Raspberry Pi completely changed that. Available for less than $30, the original Raspberry Pi was a completely revolutionary piece of tech. Since that original release, Raspberry Pi have continued to develop on their range by introducing a series of new models at even lower price points. However, Raspberry Pi aren't the only name on the scene when it comes to single board computers. There's now a wealth of alternative pieces of tech that promise to do a similar job to that of Raspberry Pi. With that in mind, this article will look at the best single board computers you can buy in 2016. BeagleBone Black Amongst the biggest complaints of first time Raspberry Pi users was how long the device took to get up and running. If you're looking for a product that you can start using for development or just tinkering around with in less than 5 minutes, you'll definitely find it in the BeagleBone Black, available for a competitive price of $30. Granted, the BeagleBone Black isn't the most powerful single board computer that you'll find, but it's definitely a great starting point for those with little technical knowledge. In fact, many have praised the BeagleBone Black as a fantastic option for those looking to make their own handheld gaming console. That's largely helped by the on-board 3D graphics accelerator and mini-HDMI port, proving that this was a piece of kit designed for gaming. When you consider how much a handheld games console from Nintendo or Sony will set you back, the BeagleBone Black is definitely a no-brainer. pcDuino4 Set-Top Box Single board computers are most commonly used as a cheap streaming device that can be plugged into your PC and pull content from a variety of sources. The pcDuino4 Set-Top Box is a single board computer that's designed with the sole purpose of using software like Kodi to stream your media content to your TV. With that in mind, you'd imagine that this cheap bit of kit is a small board without much in the way of technical performance. That being said, it does have everything you'd expect out of a modern set-top box, including a WiFi module, with both HD and 4K output ports. In fact, the device even has a built in IR receiver, which is perfect if you're planning on using a remote with your little PC. For less than $25, the pcDuino4 Set-Top Box definitely makes sense if you're looking for a single board computer that's perfect for streaming your media content. That being said, those looking to use this nifty little PC for anything outside of media streaming might find the specs slightly limiting. With that in mind, it's worth considering some of the more flexible options we've included as part of this list. Cubieboard 4 When it comes to single board computers, the perception is that these pieces of tech have to be cheap with relatively low specifications. However, there's also a market for slightly higher powered single board computers and the Cubieboard 4 is designed to cater for that market. It comes in with a pretty high price tag at $144, however, for that price, you're going to be getting your hands on some pretty beefed up specs, including a 2 GHZ eight-core processor and 2 GB of attached RAM. Plus, one of the best things about this bit of kit is that you're not going to need to invest in an external storage peripheral to actually keep the OS and your files on. That's because the Cubieboard 4 has 64GB of on-board storage. For those looking for a single board computer that offers a little punch than other alternatives, you'll definitely find what you're looking for in the Cubieboard 4, but be prepared to pay for it. In conclusion, there's no denying that the Raspberry Pi is a fantastic option when it comes to single board computers. However, there's also plenty of great alternatives out there and they all offer their own perks. Believe it or not, it's also possible to design your own tech similar to the Raspberry Pi and it's easier than ever. There's plenty of PCB design software out there that allows for the easy design and construction of such technology. One of the best is Altium Designer. It's a piece of software designed with newcomers in mind and if you're looking to create something a little more bespoke than the technology we've featured here; you'll find it useful. In all though, if you're in the market for a single board computer, it's definitely worth your time to shop around or consider designing your own.

  • How to Buy the Very Best Tablet for You

Some time ago we did not have many choices available when looking at tablets. Now, because of the growing popularity of mobile devices, you can easily find dozens of interesting options on the market. In fact, it is becoming really complicated to make a choice. Most people think about costs as being the most important fact to take into account. While this is definitely something of interest, you can easily use sites like Crowd Savers , Amazon and eBay to find tablets at prices that are much lower than you would expect. When you think about prices, use them in order to compare devices that have similar specs and always look for some coupon codes. They can help you much more than you believe if you want to save cash. There are many things that have to be considered when buying a tablet. Here are those that will help you make a good choice. Should You Really Buy A Tablet? Make sure that you ask yourself this first. Many think that they would need a tablet but that is not actually the case. We have different devices that are similar to tablets so you want to also look at them. This includes: Ultrabooks – simline, light laptops that are highly-portable and offer a good battery life. E-readers – quite great in the event that you need a tablet mainly for reading e-books. Convertible tablets – a hybrid laptop that is stronger than the regular tablet and that offers what you would expect from a laptop while also being able to work as a tablet. Operating System Believe it or not, this is the most important of all the considerations you have to take into account. Operating systems will have a huge effect on how you use the tablet. Also, you normally cannot change the systems. Your choice will be based on the following main options: Apple IOS – offering many apps, thousands free. If you need apps, the App Store offers much more than you would expect. Android IOS – this is the biggest possible challenger to the IOS offered by Apple thanks to the growing popularity of Google Play. Make sure that you install antivirus though since the system has been attacked a lot in the past few months. Microsoft – a late coming operating system, mainly because of the Surface tablets. While it is not currently the best according to specialists, it is growing at a pretty fast pace. Things To Consider When Choosing Your Tablet Besides the huge factors of interest mentioned above, you will want to think about the following: Screen Size – compact tablets are more portable while the larger tablets offer a screen area that is bigger. Screen Resolution – the one factor that many do not consider, with a range from 1024 X 600 to 2560 X 1600 pixels. If you have a higher resolution, everything that is displayed will look sharper. Storage Space – as opposed to personal computers and laptops, storage space can be really limited. In most cases the variation is from 16 GB to 128 GB. However, higher storage is available. You want to be sure that you always choose something that is suitable for your purposes. Online Connection – most of the tablets will include WiFi but there are versions that also offer 3G or 4G. Choose something that is useful based on how you are mainly going to access the internet. Hardware Connections – as time passes, different connections appear as options for tablets. You need to be sure that all the necessary hardware connections will be available, like HDMI, USB and memory card slots. Battery Life – this can drastically vary from one model to the next. Processing Speed – this is measured in GHz. While it is not such a huge consideration for a tablet, you do need to be sure that you receive as much as you need. For instance, designers will normally need more. The Convertible Option When you need to work while on the go you will normally choose between a tablet and a laptop. This is normal but you might want to consider the third option, the one that most forget about, the convertible laptop. This is also referred to as hybrid laptops or 2 in 1 computers. The combo computer looks similarly to the laptop but can easily be converted into a touchscreen tablet. Laptops normally get used in landscape view while the tablet can also offer portrait view. At the same time, the laptop is stronger in terms of included hardware. This is something that you can put your hands on when you opt for the convertible. However, if you only need the tablet aspect, you can save a lot of money as you go for the regular tablet. Conclusions The laptop that is the best for you is most likely not the one that someone else should buy. Always consider the options that are available and focus on all the factors we talked about above.

  • Building Mobile Apps - How Can You Build A Mobile App Which Users Will Love?

Do you want to set yourself as a competition for other entrepreneurs or do you think you can solve a problem which you feel you can resolve on your own? What is your reason behind building a mobile app? Well, the answer to this question will help you determine whether or not your app is going to be famous and successful. Nowadays entrepreneurs are going well beyond creating new versions of their websites which are mobile-friendly and are creating apps which can gradually add value to their bottom line and increase their customer base so as to increase their profits. A big part of the reason why an app doesn't take off in the market is due to its usability and simplicity. If you too are way too eager to build a mobile app of your own, you should definitely go through the concerns of this article. Best practices for app designing – What should the entrepreneurs never ignore? We had asked some entrepreneurs to share their views and opinions on some of the best designing practices which the interested entrepreneurs should never ignore. If you're interested in designing a mobile app, you have to be watchful enough during the phase of development. Here are a few tips on the detailing part that you should do just before releasing the app. The key to success is testing the app, says Robert J. Moore, RJMetrics For any new field, you need to test the mobile apps and although this is bit of a new field, yet it is extremely effective. According to Robert, entrepreneurs should check out the platforms like Artisan in order to power the tests. Understand your users, says Danny Boice, Speek Remember that your motivations are not more important than the motivations of the users. You have to comprehend your users so that you can g deep with knowing them. It is only when you know your user thoroughly that you can place the triggers at the right place accordingly. If you can live this concept, you can create a solid foundation with user experience. When you don't do this, then your attempts to conversion are most likely going to go in vain. Designs should be use-friendly, says Andrew Schrage, Money Crashers Personal Finance Though it is a fact that majority of the Americans nowadays own smartphones, that doesn't allow you to take it for granted that they're experts in using them. For this reason, you should design a mobile app in such a simple manner that even a novice mobile user can navigate through the app and use it to the utmost extent. Do keep a support plan for using the app offline, days Doreen Bloch, Poshly Inc. Did you know that there are some of the hottest app designers who are appreciated for the usability of their apps which can be used even offline? There are apps like Evernote and WorkFlowy which work effortlessly even when the customers aren't connected to Wi-Fi or any other net signal. This is a practice which all designers should think of while planning their apps. Hence, you should think ahead of implementing the offline mode to all your apps. Streamline your design accordingly, says Adam Lieb, Duxter Irrespective of whether you're an entrepreneur or a designer, Android owners use their phones in a different manner than the iPhone owners. Therefore, you need to ensure that your principles of designing match the operating system for which you're particularly designing. Don't forget that one-size will never fit all devices. Make it easy and simple, says Kelly Azevedo, She's Got Systems Once you design a rough design, take the most non-technical family member and watch them work on the app. Is he being able to use it? Are there easy-to-read buttons? Do you write in technical language? You should watch carefully and take notes of the places where they're getting stuck. If you don't make the design intuitive and user-friendly, you can be sure that the new users will drop off pretty soon. Utilize grids, says Jesse Pujji, Ampush Using a grid in the design is extremely helpful as it can keep the entire designing consistent when you move from one page to another through the app. Grids are a vital concept of designing which allow the designers to be consistent, create connections visually and keep the design unified through the app. So, for all the app developers out there in the market, the advice remains the same. Concentrate on usability, mobile-friendliness and convenience of usage as these the three of the most vital factors to keep in mind while designing mobile apps that users will simply love. Keep in mind the above mentioned expert advice from the eminent experts.

  • Google is Pumping Some Much Needed Life into Android Auto

For a good while now, Google has been spreading its Android family beyond a series of handsets from different manufacturers. One of the company's key ventures was bringing Android to cars. Android Auto was designed as Google's answer to Apple CarPlay. However, to say that Google has let Android Auto fall behind the trend would be something of an understatement. When it originally launched, Android Auto looked like a promising way to bring Android's biggest features to your car. At the same time, a number of car manufacturers announced their support for the platform. However, since then, those car manufacturers have fallen quiet and the Android Auto project appeared to have stalled, with no assistance from Google. However, that all changed at Google I/O 2016, with the technology appearing to pump some new life into their wandering automotive platform. That new lease of life came in the form of several new features for the platform, including an announcement that Android Auto would finally ditch the need for cables and work wirelessly. Google coupled that with integration from a host of new third party apps, including navigation favourite Waze to create a platform in Android Auto that everyone is now excited about once again, as reported by Mashable. Google appear to be helping the Android Auto platform by better integrating it with the vehicles it's installed within. At launch, Android Auto appeared to be a pretty clear cut idea, it provided users with an interface to utilise their phone's navigation, music collection and make calls through the car's stereo. However, from the offset, users noticed a mysterious "OEM" tab that did little more than return the user to the car's dashboard. Well, that mysterious tab could just be the saviour of Android Auto. Honda were the first manufacturer to provide a glimpse of exactly what the tab could be used for, demonstrating Android Auto being able to access the car's BlueLink suite, which entails a number of diagnostic features like gas mileage, braking habits and error code definitions. To anyone outside of the motor industry, they may not sound like the most exciting features to dabble around in, but they're a sure fire sign that Google are now actively looking to integrate their platform with the car itself. Whilst Android Auto is undeniably a useful piece of kit for making calls, getting directions and listening to music whilst on the go, it becomes something altogether more exciting when its allowed to access the inner workings of the vehicle. Things are looking up in terms of vehicle compatibility for Android Auto too. Auto News, Gear Heads and a number of other automotive sites have reported on more and more cars coming out in the next couple of years that have support for Android Auto built in, which is sure to grow excitement around the platform. If Google continue to expand their feature set for the platform like they have been doing, it should only attract more vehicle manufacturers to Android Auto as an alternative to building their own digital interface inside their cars. Aside from that, as reported by the Verge, Google are also removing the need for a supporting car with Android Auto in the future. The inclusion of a version of Android Auto that runs directly off the phone without the need for a compatible car is a nice little nod to users who don't have the cash to splash on a new vehicle. At the same time, it's largely guaranteed to get more users on board with Android Auto. Android Auto's current lack of progress isn't too much of a troubling issue when you take a look at the progress of the opposition, Apple Car Play. Apple appear to have largely stalled when it comes to their platform, which presents something of an opportunity for Google. The company need to work on developing Android Auto's feature set and getting it into more cars than Apple. It's still early days for Android Auto, so it's difficult to be too pessimistic about the platform. If Google hadn't put Android Auto at the forefront of their recent announcements at I/O 2016 then the future of the platform would be worrying. However, for now, Google appears to be pumping some much needed life into Android Auto, the most promising smart car interface.

  • How Social Networks are Bringing Communities Closer Together

By now everyone is aware of social media and how it impacts the modern culture. They exist for one purpose: to connect people beyond the boundaries of location, language, ethnicity, and religion. The biggest social network – Facebook -- serves as the all-embracing platform that connects everyone for all purposes. It also has groups that allow members to participate in communities that share similar interests. However, let's face it – the Facebook community can be hostile at times. Clashing views, disagreements, and cyber-bullying may beat the purpose of social networking and introduce conflicts within the community. Of course, in an overarching social network like Facebook, you cannot expect everyone to have the same views and interests. If you love social media and want to make the most out of it, then you should consider joining networks that do more than just socialising. Apart from Facebook, there are social platforms that are dedicated to specific fields of interest. These platforms offer a lot more than Facebook regarding participation, interaction, and contribution – thus forming a much closer online community. Fleeber – Musicians Soundcloud and YouTube are great for music lovers, but Fleeber is for musicians who want to contribute to the musical world. As a musician, one of the biggest challenges is building a network. Fleeber's tagline, "Music Happens Together", is empowered by the platform that connects individuals with different musical inclinations. Here, users can form bands, look for gigs, find recording studios, connect with producers, and even sell their original work or business ideas in the music industry. GoodReads – Book Lovers GoodReads is not a social platform for those who just read books – it is for those who fall in love with them. The social aspect works by letting you know what your friends are reading. Users may also discuss titles that they adore, hate, or recommend. If you are looking for new books for future reading, you can check out the user-submitted reviews or discover them by category. Lastly, GoodReads offer users book recommendations by looking at the titles you've enjoyed in the past. Deily – For Religion & Spirituality Some people think social media is killing religion. Deily proves that it can do the opposite and bring different religions closer together. This social platform is all about sharing your faith, expanding your religious circle, and understanding the faith of other religions. You can access religious topics under major religions such as Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism whether as a learner or as a contributor. BakeSpace – Home Cooks Despite the name, BakeSpace is not just about baking. It is a social publishing platform for home cooks who want to share their recipes with the world. As a user, you can view recipes from other users and add them to your "Recipe Box." You may also create your cookbook which you can share or sell to the BakeSpace community. GitHub – Developers GitHub is a popular code-sharing website for programmers – professional or hobbyist. It is a great platform that can help users refine their software development skills. Apart from getting answers to development-related problems, users can also access codes that can easily be copied or ask the community for a specific code that fits their needs. Lastly, GitHub allows users to view, study, and contribute to millions of open source software development projects. LinkedIn – Professionals Whether you are looking for work or new contacts, LinkedIn is the place for you. It is a social platform that brings together the world's pool of talented professionals and growing businesses, making it the ideal location for discovering new opportunities. With more professionals joining each day, you can also use Linkedin to find past colleagues that you may have worked with in the past. Conclusion Facebook is indeed an incredible platform that is making the world smaller. However, with its broad coverage, many people could be missing out on what social media can do. With the networks mentioned above, people from across the globe can discover new ways to work together and achieve something meaningful. Unlike networks that most people use for the purpose of sharing personal updates, platforms like Deily, LinkedIn, and GitHub gives users the ability to become contributing members of the online community.

  • Slack Expands into Australia as Dominance over the Tech Industry Continues

Slack is a name that you quite simply can't escape in the tech industry right now. For a good while now, there's been a number of online tools available, designed with remote working and communication mind. One of the most notable of those tools is undeniably Microsoft's Skype, however, Slack has completely thrown the industry on its head. Slack is the virtual online office environment that allows team members to quickly and efficiently communicate from any device, like they're in the same room. It's gradually been picked up by a number of businesses in tech and other industries. The service's dominance has only grown and that's something proven by their latest expansion into Australia. As of March 2016, Slack has opened its sixth global office in Melbourne, Australia. The office was opened with the attention of catering for the Asia-Pacific region, where Slack is a growing name. The company now feels it necessary to better cater for the Asia-Pacific time zone, according to Slack's CEO and co-founder Stewart Butterfield when he was cutting the ribbon. With that in mind, the primary use of Slack's new premises in Australia will be to house customer service staff that can be contactable in that time zone. It's definitely a sign of Slack's dominance across the world, needing to cater for a range of different time zones. Slack's decision to choose Melbourne in Australia as the base for their Asia-Pacific operations is likely down to how quickly the service has been adopted in the region. Australia is already home to a number of big business' that have adopted Slack as part of their day to day operations, including the likes of Seek, Isobar and REA Group. With that in mind, Slack's decision to open an operations centre in Australia is likely in order to cater for those companies and future companies adopting Slack in the country. The opening of an Australia base for the platform comes as Slack continues to dominate across the globe, with the platform believed to have 2.3 million daily active users in 2016. That equals out at a growth in users from 2015 at about 10 fold, with the size of the average paid team also increasing by 20%. When it comes to picking up new users from Australia and across the globe, Slack is showing no sign of slowing down. That being said, Slack is just one of many platforms currently available on the market right now, all designed with the intention of making working from home easier. Undeniably one of the most prominent of those options alongside Slack is Time Doctor. Whilst not focussing directly on communication between a team, the purpose behind Time Doctor is to allow for better time tracking for teams and freelancers. Time Doctor is a tool that many freelancers can't live without and the fact that it can be used by a team means that it can work comfortably hand in hand with Slack. Arguably the biggest casualty of Slack's success has been the humble old email. When it comes to office communication, email within environments like Outlook has undeniably been the go-to solution. However, Slack is built on a premise of instant messaging, much like the likes of Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. However, it's contained within a professional environment that can only be accessed by employees of that company. Slack essentially allows for the creation of a mini social network that can be used by all within a company for instant messaging, file sharing and more. Plus, the inclusion of apps allows for easy integration when it comes to video calls and tweeting. That's all in addition to the fact that Slack can be accessed from a multitude of devices, whether it's through desktop applications on Windows and Mac, or mobile variations for continued communication on the go on Android and iOS devices. The success of Slack is testament to the way business is changing. More and more companies are allowing their employees to work remotely and tools like Slack mean that a virtual office environment can be nearly as good as the real thing. Slack's decision to open a sixth location in Australia shows that they're a name that's quickly spreading and providing support for their huge user base is of paramount importance. Slack is well known for its excellent levels of support that it provides, especially to users who have paid to use a premium version of the platform. With that in mind, it's easy to see why Slack would want to expand their customer service operations to cater to those in the Asia-Pacific time zone, whilst also looking to expand their user-base over there. There's no slowing Slack down now, they're quickly eradicating the need for actual office space and showing that virtual can do the job just as well.
