  • Growing Up Geek

To me being a geek is all about technology regular toys did not impress me much but then gaming consoles, computers, home theater systems, that was my passion. My mother and father had no idea where I got this passion from. They had no idea how to use a computer and a home theater system for them was a black and white TV with a speaker. My uncle on the other hand was very into technology and I would spent time at his house using his expensive equipment waiting for the day that I could have enough money to buy something. One Christmas at exactly 12 am I got my first computer I was around 11 years old and all I remember is that to me it was the best thing in the world. I had no idea what I was going to use it for but it still was the best thing in the world. As any good geek will do I stayed up until 4 am putting it together in my room and making sure I installed all the software necessary to use it and of course I gave paint a try. Of course I was a kid and well I had no idea what else I would use it for so I used paint. I got hooked, next acquisition on a trip to Miami (got some money to buy new clothes) I decided to spent my money on a nice laser disc home theater system and wear the same clothes for another couple of years. Then at college my addiction to gadgets grew and I was working a part time job to make extra money and find some new gadgets to get. On a trip to Best Buy I saw an MP3 player called Nomad Jukebox one of the first mp3 players on the market with 30GB of storage and a price tag of 500 bucks. I had to get one. Expensive hobby I managed to find. Especially when you buy new and in a year the price is down 50%.
