Amazon Prime is pretty useful, offering free two-day shipping, access to streaming content and other perks. It also costs around $140 per year. If you’re looking to cut unused and unnecessary subscriptions, Prime might be right at the top of your list. After all, Amazon did just start serving up advertisements to Prime Video viewers.

Like most subscriptions, the cancellation process is slightly more complicated than it should be. Don’t worry, though. We’ve got you covered. Here’s exactly how to cancel your Prime membership on computers and smartphones.

How to cancel Amazon Prime on a desktop or laptop

The easiest way to cancel an Amazon Prime membership is on a web browser via a desktop or laptop computer. For most users, this is pretty straight forward.

Note, I said this works for most users. If you signed up for Prime using the Android mobile shopping app or the Prime Video app, you’ll have to cancel by accessing your Google subscriptions on the web or the Google Play store on mobile. If using a web browser, log into your Google account and visit your subscriptions and payment page. Look for Subscriptions about halfway down the page. Under that, you’ll see Manage Subscriptions. You’ll see Amazon Prime show up in a list. Click on it and follow the prompts to cancel.

It’s also worth noting that Amazon offers full refunds to Prime subscribers if you actually haven't used the service.

How to cancel Amazon Prime in the Amazon app

Another way to cancel your membership is through the Amazon shopping app itself.

The Your Stuff tab.

  1. Start by opening up the app and tapping the three little lines at the bottom right side of the screen. This opens up a shortcuts tab.

  2. Scroll down you’ll find an icon marked Your Stuff, complete with an image of an open Amazon box.

  3. Click on that icon and look for Account. Tap that icon.

  4. Scroll and look for Manage Prime Membership.

  5. Tap that button and look for Update, Cancel and More.

  6. Hit that and tap End Membership.

  7. Follow the prompts to finish up.

It’s worth noting that the process to cancel within the app is subject to change at any time.

How to cancel Amazon Prime Video

You can actually subscribe to an Amazon Prime Video account without signing up for the full Prime experience. This is a great idea if you hate packages, but still care about Reacher or The Boys. The cancellation process here is a bit different, though simple.

On a desktop, head to Primevideo.com and login. Click on Account & Settings and then Your Account. Look for End Subscription and click it. That’s pretty much it. However, if you signed up for Prime Video through a third-party, like a mobile service provider, you’ll have to contact them for specific cancellation information.

FAQs

Does canceling Prime end your subscription immediately?

Once you cancel Amazon Prime, you’ll still have access to your benefits for a while. Your membership will last until the next billing period. For instance, if you cancel on the first of the month, but your billing period doesn’t end until the 22nd, you’ll have 21 days of access before the subscription officially finishes.

How do I cancel my Amazon Prime free trial?

The process here is nearly identical to the above steps on desktop computers and mobile devices. The only difference? On mobile, look for End Trial and Benefits instead of End Subscription. On the website, head to your Prime membership page. Click the Update tab and then hit Cancel Membership.

Can you cancel Prime at any time?

You can cancel Amazon Prime at any time, with some caveats. First, the subscription will remain active until the next billing period. This isn’t a huge deal in the case of monthly payments, but can be frustrating if you purchased an annual plan. If you cancel, say, in June and your next billing period is in December, you’ll have to continue enjoying your subscription benefits until winter or call up an Amazon rep. Also, if you signed up via a third-party, you have to cancel through them and they might have unique conditions.
