Ubisoft is winding down the third year of Rainbow Six: Siege with another big update that might take players out of their comfort zones. The developer's upcoming Operation Wind Bastion will add a free new Morocco map, Fortress, and two Moroccan characters that throw a curve into familiar gameplay. Nomad has proximity-based air-blast grenades that can knock down a stubborn defender. Kaïd, meanwhile, can electrify metal defenses like barbed wire and reinforcing walls. If there's a must-hold room, Kaïd can make it very hard to breach.

Ubisoft sanitizes 'Rainbow Six: Siege' to expand its audience

Ubisoft wants to bring Rainbow Six: Siege to new Asian markets, and it's sterilizing some parts of the game in the process -- regardless of where you live. It's prepping a Year 3 Season 4 update to the global version of the game that removes numerous references to gambling, sex and certain violent elements. Slot machines, neon stripper signs, blood patches and even skull imagery has been replaced with 'safer' references, even in in the activity feed for kills. There will be a separate build, Ubisoft added on Reddit, but it'll be region-locked even if you try to use a VPN.

Epic isn't the only one using the promise of free in-game fashion to promote healthier security. Ubisoft is rewarding account holders with a free Rainbow Six: Siege skin if they enable two-factor authentication. It's a somewhat complicated process (it entails the Google Authenticator mobile app and QR codes), but the developer is betting that the allure of a unique operator outfit will be worth the hassle. As it is, you'll need to do this if you're the competitive sort -- 2FA will be required for ranked matches in the near future.

The next 'Rainbow Six: Siege' update shakes up a familiar formula

Ubisoft has revealed the full details for Rainbow Six: Siege's upcoming Operation Grim Sky update, and it's clear that this is as much about changing the mechanics of the game itself as it is adding some variety. Both new characters, Clash (above) and Maverick, will introduce gadgets that should force experienced players to rethink their strategies. Clash is the first defender with a shield, and hers includes a built-in taser -- she can slow down and damage anyone who gets relatively close. The attack character Maverick, meanwhile, can use a blowtorch to quietly cut holes in just about anything to take out unsuspecting enemies and disable gadgets. You can't assume that a wall is safe simply because you didn't hear anything.

Rainbow Six: Siege has a massive fan base years after launch, but how is it supposed to keep those players interested when new maps and characters will only do so much? By going back to where it all began, it seems. Ubisoft has shared the first details of Siege's Year 3's season 3, Operation Grim Sky, and its centerpiece is the tactical shooter's first complete "map rework." The studio will refresh Hereford Base (a map that has been around since the beta) with a new architecture, appearance and layout. It should seem "familiar" to veteran players, Ubisoft said, but will effectively become a new map.

Rainbow Six: Siege has come a long, long way from the early days when it was a risky break from the series' familiar formula. Ubisoft has revealed that the team-based tactical shooter now has over 35 million players. It's not certain how many of those are active on a regular basis, but there's a lot of content for them to play -- Ubi noted that there has been 10 seasons' worth so far.

Ubisoft clamps down on 'Rainbow Six: Siege' hate speech

It's not just Blizzard taking more aggressive steps to fight toxic behavior. Ubisoft has revealed that it's implementing an upgraded system for banning players who use hate speech in Rainbow Six: Siege matches. The developer now tracks how often players are reported using hate speech and issues bans accordingly, ranging from 2 days for the lightest uses to a permanent ban for the most egregious offenders. And if you do get a ban, Ubisoft won't beat around the bush -- it'll tell you that the ban was due to "toxicity."

'Rainbow Six Siege' update could make your PS4 crash (updated)

With more than 20 million players, it's safe to say that Rainbow Six Siege is still going strong. But, a new console crashing bug could put a damper on the good times for fans of the tactical shooter. At least on PS4, anyway. Gamers have been tweeting about the issue since the release of the title's latest patch, and Ubisoft has confirmed it is looking into it. For the time being, though, it doesn't have a fix. "Players have reported a crashing issue regarding the party invitation. We are cooperating with Sony on this issue and would advise you to not use this feature until a resolution is found," the developer said in a statement on its support site.

Rainbow Six: Siege hit a few bumps on the road to release, but now it's out in the wild and folks are breaching doors and clearing rooms with a righteous fury. Not us. We're going into the game pretty blind, and that's not because someone tossed a flashbang into the room. How will Sean take to the multiplayer-only tactical shooter? Considering his disdain for tutorials, probably not too well! However, you can find out for yourself starting at 6 PM ET / 3 PM Pacific as we broadcast live on Twitch. Check us out here on this very post, the Engadget Gaming homepage, or, if you want to join us in chat, Twitch.tv/Joystiq.Update: For reasons unknown to us, Rainbow Six: Siege refused to play nice with our streaming setup. Instead, we went down memory lane and played Mario 64, Punch-Out, NES Remix 2 and Ducktales Remastered)

Tom Clancy is gone, but Ubisoft definitely hasn't forgotten the military-centric author or his legacy of branded video games. Neither have the folks at Humble Bundle, for that matter. Pledging at least $1 will get you Rainbow Six; Rainbow Six 3 Gold; Rainbow Six: Vegas; the original Ghost Recon; Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on PC; and access to the Rainbow Six Siege multiplayer beta. Drop more than the average price (currently $7.99) and you'll pick up Rainbow Six Vegas 2, the first Splinter Cell and the one that changed things up considerably, Splinter Cell: Conviction. But wait, there's even more: A $10 donation adds the latest Sam Fisher adventure, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to the mix.

It seems like that original October 13th release date proved a bit too unlucky for Ubisoft and Rainbow Six: Siege. A post on the gaming juggernaut's blog says that the game has a lot of room to improve and an extra month or so will help the developers do just that. Namely, balancing weapons and equipment, tweaking co-op "across all game modes" and some other housekeeping bits.

Last year Call of Duty brought Kevin Spacey, and for 2015, Ubisoft is calling on Angela Basset to star in its next Rainbow Six game. Named Six, she's the leader of your terrorist-hunting squad, doling out the intel needed to eliminate targets. Ubisoft also showed off a live demo of five players participating in the revamped Terrohunt mode that can be played solo or cooperatively. Rainbow Six Siege is set for release on October 13th, while a beta on all platforms (PC, PS4, Xbox One) is scheduled for September 24th offering both PvP and Terrohunt -- sign up here. While The Division might not be launching in 2015 (it was pushed back to early 2016), you'll have at least one way to get your Tom Clancy gaming fix this year. Ubisoft has announced that Rainbow Six Siege will ship worldwide on October 13th. The counter-terrorist raid shooter will be available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and players who pre-order will have guaranteed access to a closed beta test. It's hard to say if this title will do justice to the original Rainbow Six games it's trying to follow, but you'll know for sure in about five months.
