The special edition of Fallout 4 comes with a pretty spectacular piece of swag: a real-life Pip-Boy that works with your smartphone. Understandably, the $120 bundle sold out almost as soon as it went on sale, but as much as the game's publisher wanted more of your cash, it's admitted that it simply can't make any more. Bethesda's Pete Hines has told GameSpot that the factories that produced the device were working at full-tilt, but simply couldn't fit more manufacturing runs into their production schedules.

A fully functional Pip-Boy 3000 has emerged from the vault of Team Reno, a five-member group of people way, way smarter than us. The device can display relative humidity, altitude, latitude and longitude, atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature, object temperature and of course, radiation levels. It was created as part of NASA's SpaceApps Challenge, which asked designers to create wearable technology for future space travelers. "We wanted to make a piece of popular science fiction into a reality so we chose the Pip-Boy 3000 from the game Fallout 3," the team wrote regarding their entry. "The goal was to bring environmental sensors into an easy-to-use cuff device that could help a wearer determine if their environment is safe for navigation or helmet removal." Team Reno consists of Colin Loretz, Ashley Hennefer, Andrew Warren, Christopher Baker and Ben Hammel. Remember those names, for when the Great War nukes us into oblivion, they'll be the ones you'll want to search out for gear to survive the wasteland. [Image: Team Reno]

This impressive wrist / forearm cuff is the brainchild of Adafruit forum member and modder Stephanie, who has built a sensor platform into the fashion accessory. The device can monitor the exposure value, track your movements over GPS, measure your galvanic skin response, tell you the temperature, humidity and even doubles as a watch and flash-light. It was built around Sparkfun's Pro Micro development board and a boatload of sensors purchased from Adafruit. We might just build one ourselves with a radiation detector, so that we can live out our Pip-Boy fantasies down at the mall. %Gallery-156412%

  • Homemade PIP-Boy 3000 does (almost) everything

Here at Joystiq, we love the idea of taking the non-existant and making it, well, existent, and we applaud the modders, hackers and crafters out there that are crafty enough to do it. Take MyMagicPudding, for instance: not content with living in a world where Fallout 3's wrist-mounted Personal Information Processor didn't exist, Mr. Puddin' took it upon himself to bend the universe to his will create a fully functioning PIP-Boy 3000. Using an HTC Desire HD, an Arduino Uno microcontroller and a custom-cast casing forged by "Skruffy," Puddin's PIP-Boy stays true to its vault-born inspiration by ignoring the Desire HD's touch-screen capabilities and instead utilizing a functioning scroll-wheel and potentiometer; the correct lights even light up corresponding to what screen you're on. Puddin's first foray into the world of electronics is a picturesque representation of one of our favorite gaming gadgets, but the sad truth is that so many components were required to produce a perfect PIP-Boy, there ended up being no room left for the owner's arm. Once again, the limitations of physical space have prevented fiction from becoming reality.

  • HP developing wrist PC for military, finally putting that flexible display to good use

Looks like that flexible plastic display Hewlett-Packard has been talking up since 2008 is finally ready to hit the big time. According to Carl Taussig, director of information surfaces at HP Labs, the company is developing a wrist PC at the behest of the US military. Behind the display, a thin strip of metal-coated plastic (merely 50 microns thick) is printed with transistors for, you know, displaying stuff. The thing will be solar powered and, like the display, the solar panels will also be printed, using a technology called PowerFilm. With any luck a prototype should be ready within a year. Now, can we get a PIP Boy already?

  • Flexible organic display brings PIP-Boy one step closer to reality

We've seen the occasional PIP-Boy-esque wearable in the past, and now more details have emerged on this flexible OLED that we first peeped at CES in January. The 4-inch organic electroluminescent display sports up to 1.67 million colors, QVGA (320 x 240) 100ppi resolution, and can be bent to a curvature radius of about 2 inches. Hopefully, this doesn't become a must-have fashion accessory any time soon: while it's perfectly appropriate attire for post-apocalyptic wastelands, we don't know how well it'll fly at the sorts of high society social events we normally frequent. We got one more pic for you after the break. [Via Ideaity]

Okay, so our fully-functioning Pip-Boy is currently in development, and the iPhone version didn't exactly hit the spot. Thankfully, the BlackBerry skin is awfully close to fulfilling our Fallout dreams. Modder sadosdemetrios has created a functioning Pip-Boy homescreen for the Blackberry, available for free at Crackberry, in your choice of green or blue. The modder is currently accepting donations for his hard work -- please donate generously! The closer we get to inventing the real Pip-Boy, the closer we are to nuclear annihilation. And then, like EA Sports, we'll be in the game.[Via Kotaku]

Look, there's really nothing special going on here -- it's just a theme for BlackBerry devices. A totally, totally awesome theme for BlackBerry devices. So awesome, in fact, that it makes our corporate-issued / controlled phone seem somehow cool again. What are you waiting for? Go get it. [Via Gizmodo] Update: Sadly, it seems the theme has been removed at Bethesda's request -- because, you know, this is obviously bad PR for the Fallout series... or something. Thanks, Behzad!

This isn't the first time we've laid our eyes upon a wrist-worn PC, but if you're in the market for something ultraportable, you might want to check this bad boy out. Brought to you by Glacier Computer, the Ridgeline W200 is a wearable refresh of the company's vehicle-mounted Ridgeline family. With a case constructed out of a high strength, low weight reinforced magnesium alloy, the 10.2 ounce machine sports a 3.5-inch color display, touch screen, backlit keypad, hot swappable battery pack, and plug-and-play support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS modules. Available in Windows CE or Linux flavors, the system integrates such features as tilt and silent reckoning for putting the device in standby when its not in use, and will remarkably make you feel like your entire life is a quest in Fallout 3. Now all we have to do is find some super mutants, a radscorpion or two, and a nest of unsuspecting raiders. Should be no trouble at all.

Many gamers were underwhelmed by the replica Pip-Boy 3000 digital clock that was included in the Amazon-exclusive Fallout 3 Survival Edition. Fortunately, a clever modder by the name of Otaku Joe had the presence of mind to rip out the gadget's chronometric guts and replace them with an iPod Touch, bringing us one step closer to a fully realized wrist-mounted health tracker, inventory manager, quest chronicler and, of course, old-timey radio. You can check it out in a hilariously awkward video preview after the break.[Via Kotaku]

In the bowels of CES, Engadget discovered the first sign that the nuclear holocaust foretold in the Fallout series is approaching. Yes, what you see above is a Pip-Boy prototype. Sure, Universal Display Corporation hasn't given a name to its 4-inch, flexible, wrist-worn OLED display (designed for the Brotherhood of Steel military), but we know exactly what we'll be using this handy thing for in the future -- well, those of us who survive, at least.Perhaps we can put this in a way that'll convey the seriousness of this situation:Step 1: Pip-Boy invented.Step 2: ???Step 3: Nuclear holocaust.Check out a video of the device after the break. var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/The_real_life_Fallout_3_Pip_boy_peripheral_that_almost_was'; Writing about video games can often expose you to those heartbreaking stories of things in development that almost made it, but never appeared. Things like the Phantom game console, Shenmue Online, and the years-in-the-making Duke Nukem Forever. We spent time with Bethesda's Todd Howard beyond locked doors and found out about some of the dark secrets behind Fallout 3, including the massive real-life Pip-boy that would have had a screen built into it to allow you to interact with the game. Or possibly hold your PSP on your wrist to become a PiPSP-boy. Find out more after the breakage.

  • Real life Pip-Boy or wacky geek clock? You decide

Bethesda must really have faith in Fallout 3. Not only are they doing a "normal" collectors edition, but now they're actually going for the coveted Cat-Helmet Award® by actually creating some sort of uber-collectors edition. Available only through Amazon, the only difference between the "Survival Edition" and the normal CE is the replica Pip-Boy, which is actually a digital clock. Maybe some of the Fallout faithful out there will be willing to shell out $129.95 plus shipping for this, but frankly, we already have an alarm clock. We hate it, we don't need another one. Still, it'll be interesting to see how its sales pan out. Even though it's an Amazon exclusive, could it eventually see the price drops that the Halo 3 one did?

Click to embiggen Meet. Albert. Poor Albert has a wounded right leg, and an extremely wounded left leg. He's also got some major issues with his head. We haven't seen Albert before, mind you, but we do have an image from his Pip-Boy, one of three new images that Bethesda has released for Fallout 3. The image also gives a good indication as to how menu navigation will work. Another new screenshot released shows the Vault dweller literally shooting off the leg of a mutant adversary. Come to think of it, we really hope that wasn't Albert he just hurt. Rounding out the trio of new images is a landscape portrait of what we believe is the first town you visit in the game. Fallout 3 is due out this Fall.%Gallery-3507%

"Every time you kill an opponent, all your action points are automatically restored." So goes the description for the perk "Grim Reaper's Sprint," winner of Bethesda's Fallout 3 Create a Perk contest. The designer, Marc-André Deslongchamps of Montreal, will see his perk included in the final game as well as receive a package of PC-related prizes. The contest, announced in early October, was in honor of Fallout's 10th anniversary. Eleven runner-ups and five random entries were chosen to also receive gifts; be sure to check out their submitted perks at the contest page. We're hoping to see some of these other perks, especially Kleptomaniac, find their way into Fallout 3 in some facet. Now that we know one of the perks, anyone want to place bets on what the others will be?

Caught a picture of the Fallout 3 on Bethesda's booth wall, and got hopeful it would make an appearance. However, a Bethesda representative we talked to confirmed that, yet again, Fallout 3 is trudging along the usual Bethesda development cycle. Being that this is the second E3 where Fallout has appeared in photo form, we are hoping third time's a charm ...[Note: location of flash on pip boy purely incidental ... we swear]
