PS3 November delay official -- other deets revealed
So,
not only did we get all those PSP
goodies this morn from Sony's Ken Kutaragi at a hastily called press conference, but we also received official
confirmation that indeed, the PS3 will ship
worldwide in November, delaying the Spring launch that we all expected. As recently as just a few weeks ago Sony had staunchly denied
the delay, though, and is now laying the blame squarely at the feet of the "copyright protection" in
Sony's own Blu-ray Disc next-gen format, which is now expected to be finalized by next month. Whatevs, at this point
we'll just be happy to see ours land Stateside in time for the holidays. Mr. Kutagari also confirmed that at least some
PS3s will feature an upgradeable 60GB disk supporting the Linux OS, support a variety of TVs, and have backward compatibility for PlayStation 1 and 2 games. Also, that rumored HUB service was
confirmed, which will go by the working title of the PlayStation Network Platform, and will be free (the Basic version
anyway) supporting voice/video chat, messsaging, on-line shopping, and more. While an exact price for the PS3 was not
stated, a minimum price range of about $425 was announced. See, fessing to the delay wasn't so so hard now, was it
Sony? Glad you finally got it over with.

This should be a slap in the face to all those Sony bashing idiots who simply assumed Sony would wait until 2007 for the US release. Of course nothing is concrete until it happens, but I think its pretty safe to say Sony will folow though with this. I'm kind of pissed it won't be until November but at least we aren't waiting around with nothing but really bad rumors anymore.
Hassan.L @ Mar 15th 2006 7:44AM
So......................where are the final specs, title launches and in-game videos. World wide launch sucks. I'm sure the won't be able to feed the whole world so if you want one for christmas you better book your PS3 today.
Matt @ Mar 15th 2006 8:03AM
The 'Plan' is November? Plan??? Without a date given, I'm still thinking 2007.
Duodenum @ Mar 15th 2006 8:06AM
MINIMUM price of $425? What games will be available at launch? November is 8 months away, do any developers have final dev kits yet? Has Sony released the final specs (I don't believe they have).
I'm predicting a PS2-like launch. A few titles at first, and then a drought of several months. Xbox 360 will own this Christmas even if the PS3 does get released. They needed Spring, they're not getting it, and they're going to need a miracle to deflect attention away from Microsoft.
Pete @ Mar 15th 2006 8:10AM
Sony did this with the PS2 during rumor time. Differently, however, PS2 was launched in JPN in March and in the US in October (wow that seems like a long time ago). Now they announce the goodies in March and plan to launch worldwide (brave move) this Nov. I am looking forward to it, they finally ended the constant , and often ridiculous, rumors. Good job, Kutaragi! Please don't give opponents any reason to bash your rep this time (lost in translation moments, i hope).
MakeMyDay @ Mar 15th 2006 8:10AM
Minimum price of 425$ ? So that would be the version without the HD , wirelles controller or the rest of the goodies. So inorder to truly buy a PS3 with all the goodies , you will need something like 600$ .
At the same time the XBOX 360 premium would be 300$ ( or more likely 299$. So basicly half the price. And the Revolution will be god knows how much cheaper.
Great marketing there.
MPDXrules @ Mar 15th 2006 8:10AM
I would pre order now, US is prob only going to receive 1/2 half a million on launch. Its Xbox 360 all over again.
Also mention was a hard drive was required to have the full benefits of the HUB. Factor that with an extra controller and 1 game and you got yourself a $600 + bill. Also lets not think its going to be early November, more like NOV 29!!!!. At this price point and Nintendo Rev also coming, Consumers are going to be real picky about thier games. If untold legends is the best we get at launch, Id rather spend my money on the new zelda, revolution, god of war 2, and Halo 3
Arizona Glover @ Mar 15th 2006 8:15AM
Maybe its just me, after all it could be that im getting old, but is the 360 really seen as a sucess? To me it seems more of a "next gen 0.5" I dont mind waiting for the PS3, if it really is going to be be somthing over what we have now.
OMAC @ Mar 15th 2006 8:16AM
From IGN, quoted from Ken Kutaragi:
""A completely simultaneous launch is physically impossible," Kutaragi said, "but we believe we'll be able ship to users throughout the world around this time.""
Wow. first he says worldwide launch is impossible then says they 'believe' it will happen. Still pretty vague on the launch date.
He also goes on to mention that a hard drive will be required for games and developers can expect a hard drive to be present, but stops short on saying that it will be included. Again, pretty vague.
At least the announcement of a 60GB HD is good news. Microsoft won't be far behind in releasing a higher capacity model of their own. See? Competition is good!
Jason @ Mar 15th 2006 9:17AM
By simultaneous release in Nov, I think Sony means within a few days of each other. CNBC had a brief segment about it this morning. Their take on the news was pretty negative.
Regardless, they have finally put a stake in the ground and will be held to it. Best of luck to them -- Lord knows they need it, badly. A big chunk of Sony's future success lies in the fortunes of the PS3 and Blu-Ray. And Sony's reason for delay -- Copy protection. For their sake, I hope they don't do something stupid like put rootkits on their games.
I bet Microsoft is enjoying this bit of news.

The delay doesn't surprise me. Heck, i'd be shocked if it makes it out by Christmas. This is going to be a huge boon for the 360, as it will be readily available and could even see a small price drop to blunt the PS3 launch. Either that, or Microsoft keeps the current price and includes a HD-DVD drive.
The $425 launch price sounds about right considering how much new technology is included (i.e. Cell Processor, Blu-Ray drive). Sony is also going to lose a lot more money on these things than Microsoft.
I'm betting we'll see a simulatenous launch in the US and Japan in November, but the console will be even tougher to get than a 360 during launch. Lots of gamers will probably cave and get a 360 instead.
The launch titles will probably be pretty weak, too, considering the fact that few (if any) developers have final dev kits.
I also love the "copy protection" excuse. The real issue is hardware production. The Cell is a brand new chip, so yields won't be as high as they would with other chips. Since Blu-Ray drives are new, those will almost certainly take longer to manufacture than a DVD or HD-DVD drive.
I'm betting that the launch lineup will be as anemic as the Sega Saturn's was. It had 6 titles at launch and that's all it had for months afterward... all because Sega rushed the thing out the door. We know who won the 32-bit console wars. Could the tide be shifting?
Either way, the new console war will be the most interesting yet. I think Microsoft will give Sony a run for it's money in every territory except Japan.
Steve @ Mar 15th 2006 9:19AM
A few random thoughts:
1) With regards to launch dates, anyone remember the PSP launch in Europe? First it was meant to be at the same time as America then, a few weeks before that date, it was delayed for a few months. We ended up getting it six months later than the US so I wouldn't bank on Sony delivering the PS3 until the units are confirmed as shipping.
2) Price is going to be a big issue if that minimum of $425 dollars is anywhere close to accurate. If Sony do their usual dollars to pounds less a small random number conversion it's going to be at least 100 more expensive that the 360, and that's if MS don't drop the price of the Premium pack.
3) 60Gb ain't enough. Wait, hold on, hear me out. Sony intend this thing to be a media centre in and of itself and that 60Gb is going to get eaten up awfuly quickly between movies, music and demo downloads, let alone retro games purchased over HUB. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a MUCH larger HDD available at launch and a HD-free SKU for those that intend to use the PS3 as a media centre. For that matter, wonder what the odds are on the HD not being able to act as a memory card? I know, sounds stupid, but wouldn't it have a huge impact on MagicStick sales?
4) Anyone want to hazzard a guess at home many faulty units turn up in the launch batch? Blue-ray drive with two lasers (if it's going to read PS1 and 2 media), HDD, Cell processor, Nvidia GPU... that's not only going to generate a load of heat but also have serious potential for the first batch of what is essentialy all new tech to be seriously broken. Hope it doesn't happen but...
5) Having to delay PS3 until November means that, realisticly, it's going to be March 07 before there's any real stock sitting on shelves for more than a couple of hours. Wonder what that does to Blu-Ray sales? Surely must give HD-DVD a bit of a boost if the major channel for making Blu-Ray available to the home is going to be six months late?
6) One other thing, this HDD, where's it going to go? If they're keeping the same case design there doesn't seem to be any external dock for it and if it's user replaceable it either needs one or an internal bay that's easily accessible. If it's the internal option then where the heck do you fit it in a case that's already carrying a huge number of ports and hardware?
jason @ Mar 15th 2006 9:20AM
i bet they have all the componets all made and ready to be put together and stored in some warehouse and all they are waiting on is the blueray drive so all they have to do is put the system together.
allister @ Mar 15th 2006 9:20AM
Can you clear somthing up. Is there truth in the romours about a remake for Final Fantasy 7 on the PS3?
Scott @ Mar 15th 2006 9:27AM
OMAC:
That sentence makes sense to me. He's saying they can't release worldwide "completely simulataneous[ly]." Which likely means launching on or around the same day in Japan, US, UK. However, "around this time" likely means something similar to Microsoft's launch of the 360, e.g. each region's launch within two to four weeks of each other.

too expensive. Thanks but I'll pass. The PSP on the other hand has finally dropped to a reasonable price. Personally I would like to see $199 + 1 free game which might be possible if I look around. Still PSP + at least 1GB MS + warrantee (It's a mobile system after all.) = still a hell of a lot of money.

Hmmm, since Sony has time till the release maybe they will revamp the specs of the PS3 to make it a much, much more powerful system than the 360.

"Revised Release Plan"
Ha! That's the funniest spin i've seen in a while. Well, i guess it sounds better than "everything we told you before is a lie."
Dome @ Mar 15th 2006 9:51AM
Sounds like a delay for Japan, but certainly right on time from what most ppl were thinking for the US release, and much earlier than expected for the European release (since most were expecting an 07' release for Europe).
I'm assuming that the PS3 will be released competively with the X360 premium bundle at launch.
Ryan Jensen @ Mar 15th 2006 9:51AM
I never for an instant thought that the PS3 would be available for the US this spring; I knew it would be released for the US towards the end of this year. Won't the XBOX 360 have HD-DVD available, have more next gen games available, have a better (and proven) online service, cost less $ (and may even have a price drop), and be readily available by November? This is becoming less and less of a decision to wait for Sony every day.
sracer @ Mar 15th 2006 10:03AM
Any rational-thinking person can see that the whole Blu-Ray copyright protection excuse was just that... an excuse. If THAT was the only think holding up the PS3 release, where are the announcements for specific launch titles? Surely game developers didn't know until recently about the delay so they would've been ready for the planned Spring launch.
If it was only the Blu-Ray issue, why no firm statement on the price? Didn't they have that all planned out for the Spring launch?
I call BS. What probably happened is Sony knew all along that they wouldn't make the Spring date but were forced to disclose it now because some downstream contractor (print media, trinkets, etc.) or promoter didn't receive the necessary master material from Sony and would've uncovered the story on their own.
Dave @ Mar 15th 2006 10:07AM
All of the following is just pure speculation on my part, but I think this is a blessing in disguise for Sony. It will give them time to resolve their hardware issues and wait for the Blu-Ray drive production to get cheaper (hopefully).
Honestly, Xbox 360 hasn't really done much to take away a big chunk of the market, with their production issues and lack of games (as of yet). I know Live is important to them, but it seems like people play Live Arcade games more than they play the actual 360 games.
Also, to me personally, 360 is exactly the same as Xbox except with improved graphics. C'mon MS, where is the innovative, exciting gameplay we're looking for?
If anything, 360 will suffer some of the problems that Dreamcast did before PS2 came out. People will know that PS3 is coming soon, so in August and September, will they really buy a 360? MS had better lower prices by then or have a good bundle package. But we're already in April almost and MS still hasn't resolved all of the production issues. So they'd better get that together soon.
I think Nintendo is waiting around to drop the bomb. I'll bet that the hardware is ready. They're spending the time making the quality first-party games that they're known for. The price tag for the Revolution is rumored to be around $200. And they have their innovative controller. So when November comes around, with 360 only being able to offer a new game or lower prices and Sony coming out with PS3 at at hefty $500 price tag, enter Revolution with a $200 price with Zelda, Super Smash Bros, and possibly a Mario game, all being launched.
I just want to end by saying that all of this is exciting for us consumers because we have a lot of choices coming...
Justin @ Mar 15th 2006 10:14AM
"Hmmm, since Sony has time till the release maybe they will revamp the specs of the PS3 to make it a much, much more powerful system than the 360."
Then send developers all-new dev kits? Right. That wouldn't cause a huger delay at all.
o rly @ Mar 15th 2006 10:19AM
Sony fanboys that were still screaming "Spring 2006" and "Spring doesn't end until June" and "They'll release it in time for sure" blah blah blah are officially owned by Sony & Kutagari.
Now Sony needs a working model to show off, but seeing as the graphics aren't that much better than the Xbox 360 (according to those that have "seen" it) maybe they should just retain the hype by not letting anyone see it until they've (pre)-ordered one and it's been delivered.
Justin @ Mar 15th 2006 10:21AM
"People will know that PS3 is coming soon, so in August and September, will they really buy a 360?"
I don't get this... what people? And what if they want a 360? If you're talking about Sony fanboys then OF COURSE they're not going to buy a 360!
The Mole @ Mar 15th 2006 10:26AM
So, 6 million units by the end of the Sony fiscal year. That's what, a supposed 2-3 million available at launch? Hmmm, sounds like the supposed failed 360 launch to me(expensive console, hard to find, huge eBay market, somewhat dissapointing launch lineup, feels like gen 1.5) I mean, they won't be able to make enough consoles to meet demand. If they dilute those console numbers for a worldwide launch that's not even 1 million per territory. I'm sure eBay is excited about this prospect, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the PS3 shortage is going to drive Xbox 360 sales through the roof.
bgdc @ Mar 15th 2006 10:26AM
Sweet, just in time for xmas. I'll take 20, please. This'll be another ebay clean up like the launch of the last one. I made out like a bandit in 2000.
Jeff @ Mar 15th 2006 10:27AM
It doesn't sound to me like this hurts Sony at all. Now everybody knows when the PS3 is coming and they'll just wait for it, just like they did with the PS2. November was the expected US date anyway - this is only a delay for Japan, and the Japanese aren't gonna be snatching up any 360's in the meantime (I mean, come on).
It's going to be harder for them logistically to do a worldwide launch, but as I said in my comment on Joystiq, they've literally been sitting twiddling their thumbs for 3 months now waiting for AACS to be worked out and now they've got another 6-8 months to ramp up production. So they've given themselves basically a full year after the original production start date to get ready for this. They should be fine.
Which is not to say there won't be shortages - there will be. But it probably won't be any worse than the wait there was for the PS2, which was replenished pretty regularly after launch (I got my system the week after).
Matt @ Mar 15th 2006 10:31AM
The world's gone mad.
Just because Microsoft have released the XBox360 already doesn't mean that Sony are duty bound to tell everyone exactly what is happening and when it will happen. When a new Nokia is released, Motorola don't instantly have to release information on their next phone.
And, even now, further presumptions and rumors are already flying. How on earth can you predict that it will release with only .5 million in the US?
To my mind, Sony did the right thing by not being badgered into providing information and "solid" details until they were ready. They can judge the success of the 360 and its components and see where to go from there and include new features and upgrades as appropriate.
If they had responded to the fools who demanded information on the very day that the 360 was launched and they had pushed for an early release date then the PS3 wouldn't have the PNP Hub service, it probably wouldn't have a hard drive and it would be stuck with some crappy alternative to Blu-Ray. But, hell, you'd have been happy because they would have at least told you so, right?
Personally I think the 360 has been a resounding flop. It doesn't live up to expectations that were set by the media hype and Microsoft themselves. The Revolution looks like it will, in all honesty, be damn good. It will have a lower price tag and Nintendo rarely struggles for popular and innovative games and hardware but by their own admission it will be aimed at a different market to the 360 and the PS3. That leaves the ball firmly planted in Sony's court. If they come up with the goods they will (again) stuff Microsoft in the console wars.
There are plenty of people who are already eagerly awaiting Blu Ray and, as mentioned, the PS3 offers probably the most realistic way to get in on the act at a time when the production of the Blu Ray drives will have dropped. I also reckon that Sony have a few surprise salvos ready to launch nearer the time that will make it a far superior machine to the 360.
Myrmidon @ Mar 15th 2006 10:48AM
Finally they tell us what we already knew: It won't be released until the end of this year. Oh well, at least the price will drop and they will have time to develop some new gadgets for it and work out some more bugs.
Kris @ Mar 15th 2006 10:57AM
I BET RIGHT.......
The delay in launch is to make sure plenty of units are available and it will be end Nov to enure a full extra 28 days of manufacturing of the unit. It will be expensive very, micorsoft could benefit from lowering the 360 but will always be shown as a poor mans PS3. Nitendo will launch before with lots of units available and truly some aswome line up's for launch and will conqure 360's reign so far.
Why are all in house Nintendo games the best? Cos its dedicated, and thats what needs to happen to PS3 to gin 100% controll of the market!!!!!!
Aint it true... prove it aint !!!!!!
Lee @ Mar 15th 2006 11:04AM
Simply to poke at the pro-X360 crowd -- In the US, the PS2, yes the PS2 is outselling X360 by 2:1. Worldwide, PS2 outsells X360 about 3:1. (what will this mean for the PS3 launch? who knows, but we'll see & then everybody can quit kvetching about X360 vs PS3)
So detract about the PS3 all you like, but Sony has taken their time & in this case, it may just pay off that they release the PS3 post-X360.
Also of note, the old XBox has recently enjoyed a price hike (here, but maybe not where you are)... take that info as you may, but that's definitely a Microsoft classic tactic... and it works my nerves when they do that.
JR @ Mar 15th 2006 11:09AM
I guess they needed time to put all the rootkits in there...
(And before anyone takes the time to respond, no, I won't drop it)
Dirty Puppy @ Mar 15th 2006 11:14AM
So if the PS3 is going to use a Blue Ray Drive, and Blue Ray can only be outputted through HDMI interface (well at least, the HD Movies), then you would absolutely need an HDTV with HDMI input. So therefore, if you bought an older HDTV with only component video, you're screwed, not to mention you can't play anything on a regular TV set!
I agree that the 360 may not feel that it's up to all the hype that surrounded it, but what is this "new innovation" everyone is referring to? Besides connecting your brain directly to a console, what is next gen besides graphics, really? The graphics of the 360 on an HDTV are awesome (have you played Fight Night??!!!), not to mention the new Ghost Recon. Imagine what another year of development in games will bring to the system? And you can play on any TV!!
Magus @ Mar 15th 2006 11:19AM
It was an apology more than an announcement.
As long as it makes it for the holiday release time is not a problem. 1up stated has their article updated saying its set for ~10th nov. This gives some time for Sony to get the hdmi connections worked out.
They did not give any specs or even hints to the price. With good reason there are few events coming up they need to save something to throw out there.
First gen ps3 should not expect stunning visuals since developers dont have time to develop for the new architecture. Similar in the sense of the Xbox it seems more a .5 console until developers start utilizing console to potentials. Something Nintendo doesnt need to worry about.
Nothing bad can come from options to the consumer. If MS wasnt competing against Sony's giant they wouldnt take a hit on their console and jack up the price another 100-150$.
It should be in the 400-500 range. Thats about same as a future proofed xbox.(which, in my opinion is a hit to Microsoft when a year or 2 down the line 1/2 of your games cant be played or ports cant be made to available to 1/2 the audience) Xbox +hd +wireless controller +next gen optics = ~450. Nintendo has a has always been a peripheral wh*re. Dont expect your console to be able to play everything you want without some miscellaneous cables, adapters, controller add-ons, potentially even the DS.
Pikachelsea @ Mar 15th 2006 11:56AM
Hmm, an optional 60 GB hard drive... oh boy, it seems yet another home videogame console is turning into a computer.
And $425 MINIMUM? lol. Color me unsurprised. That's hilarious. I hope it costs $500 dollars just to get the "real" PS3 the way it cost $400 just to get the "real" Xbox 360. Can't wait to see the look on the face of all those PS3 diehards. I can hear the excuses already... "Yeah but it's also a blu-ray player!" That won't mean much of anything if Sony loses the next-gen media format war to HD-DVD the way their Betamax format lost out to VHS.... unless you get excited about buying Sony media in their incredibly expensive proprietary format (*cough*, PSP and its UMD movies). Which if you're a Sony fan, maybe you do. *shrug*
David @ Mar 15th 2006 12:14PM
If all they're waiting for is finalization of the Blu-ray DRM specs, why are they waiting until May to send out the final controller dev kits? And the Cell chips? And the graphics chips? Surely the controller doesn't have DRM issues.
The *entire* system is delayed. DRM is just an excuse. It also means developers won't be spending the extra months polishing and fine-tuning their games. They'll still be scrambling until November, just as they do for every system launch.
As for Blu-ray requiring HDMI, that's not true. Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) can output HD over HDMI, DVI and component connections. The only catch is AACS's Image Constraint Token (ICT), which, if enabled, forces non-HDCP connections to drop to 540p (better than DVD, but not by much). Studios can enable ICT on a disc by disc basis. Sony, Fox and others have indicated they would not to enable ICT on launch titles and older films.

I'm kind of in a rush here, finishing up my lunch break, but I noticed this in the Inquirer's article:
"It will have full Blu-ray support and a HDMI connection. It is for this reason that the PS3 has been delayed, as Sony cant get it to work properly."
This "delay over copy protection" may have more to do with HDMI rather than AACS. I seem to remember a recent article commenting on a player or standard coming out that won't drop the signal for people with older HDTVs lacking HDMI, and perhaps this is the what Sony's mulling over.
c.Lake @ Mar 15th 2006 1:28PM
OMG people! This is SONY!!!! Don't believe a word they say!!!! Sony is just trying to get in your pants, by telling EVERYTHING you WANT to hear. "Yeah baby, I'm going to call -- don't worry". Whatever! This is a hardware issue, plain and simple. There's some problem with Blu-Ray,or the Cell chip, or Both, and it's kicking them in the ass -- and rightfully so.
Please don't waste your time "pining away" for a system that not going to be available to us until Spring of 2007, at the earliest. As for this announcement being a "Slap in the face". I KNOW Sony (and you should too by now) -- I'd rather be slapped in the face, than have egg on it.

Man, just imagine the summer time, people are going to be goin crazy wanting to know more and more details about the PS3. And i guarentee! that much more consumers are going to get the X360 now because they dont want to be empty handed over the summer without a new console.
Another thing that sucks about the delay, are Senior students that are about to grauduate, i know it isnt a big deal but im a senior right now, and im going to college, and im thinkin that I wont be able to have anytime or maybe even money by the time the PS3 comes out. Its just another fact that Sony is missing out and how they may either loose a lot of consumers or just gain more anticipated angry consumers.
