Well we'll be damned. Looks like after all the biz with
the PlayStation 3 being
delayed, Blu-ray possibly
experiencing issues with managed copy, and a load of uncertainty about whether it'll even perform as well as Sony
expects (and everyone hopes), Sony's announced PS3 consoles will launch region-free for games. Yeah, you heard us, any
game anywhere in the world will play on any PlayStation 3 console purchased in any nation -- in theory. Granted, that
doesn't necessarily mean developers will include translations for every language with their game, but could this usher
in a new era of nation and language agnostic gaming? Perhaps, perhaps, but if nothing else, keeping it region-free is a
very pro-consumer move that will make it easier for game fans to be game fans. Of course that's to say nothing for the
homebrew community who will undoubtedly continue to suffer until the end of time, but hey, it's a step.[Thanks, Bruce]
Just acquired myself a Playsation3 20Gb from Yodobashi in Akihabara. It works beautifully with the limited number of available games. However the claim that it would be region free is INCORRECT. My new console will not play Australia originated PS2 games. So beware!

Making it region code free for region coded products is a whole new can of worms.
Interesting comments but would love to understand why my new PS3 advises me that my Australian bought Grand Turismo game is from another region and cannot be played!
Will the PS3 play North American PS2 games?
I am in Japan, and I have tons of North American PS2 games, I wonder if I buy the Japanese PS3, will I be able to play older PS2 games from Japan. If so, I'm heading to Akihabara.. :)
MaxSmoke: Actually, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, etc... DO have region locking for their games.
PSP, the Game Boy advance, and newer gameboy games are the only systems so far that don't.
The PS3 will be the first full scale console that (reportedly) doesn't include region locking.
this is just stupid...there is already a mod for the xbox 360 to play backup games, and within a year there will be a way to do the same thing to the ps3. regardless of what sony tries to do to protect against piracy, there will always be away to get around it...IT IS A COMPUTER!!! simply put, any type of computer can be modified to do whatever the user wants it to do, therefore there will be a way for the ps3 to be modded just like the 360 has been.
I have several Japaneese PS3's and I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to unlock the region code for American DVD's and PS2 games. I have not been able to get the PS3 to play any US DVD or PS2 game even though they stated that the PS3 would be able to play PS2 games. The Blue-Ray & PS3 games are region free but that's it. Any help. If I could find someone that can provide me with a fix for this I would gladly make it worth your while!

so does this mean we can buy a ps3 anywere in the world and dont have to worry about the uk pal sign if so can some one please give me a site were i can get a cheap ps3
