Apple launches MacBook: 13-in, Core Duo, black and white cases
As expected, Apple has launched its new consumer laptops, under the MacBook brand. The new models all share one case design, a 5.2-pound box available in black or white, with a 13.3-inch, 1280x800 display and full-size keyboard. All are based on Intel's Core Duo processor, at speeds from 1.83 GHz to 2.0 GHz. Apple claims a six-hour battery life for the new models, though we imagine that's reduced substantially if you spend that time watching DVDs. Like other recent models from Apple, the MacBook also includes an integrated iSight webcam, a remote control, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi and Bluetooth. The new models are available immediately from Apple's online store at prices from $1,099 to $1,499. If you want black, you'll have to pay more: the $1,499 model is the only one one in the color scheme; other than the case color and an 80GB drive, its specs are identical to a $1,299 white model (the 80GB drive is available as a $50 upgrade for the white version, making the price for the black case $150). And, yes, you can now bid farewell to the iBook name. Now, what on Earth is Apple going to announce at Thursday's press event?

The white MacBook... After some time of wear and tear gets permanate burn marks.
I think i'll stick with Alienwear :)
AWESOME! Was totally in the market for one too!
so... a black laptop... OMG... and the rice point is a bit high...
Black! Sweeet!
$200 more just for black?? now that just aint right
Yeah, man, the rice point ;)
But these look awesome! Still gonna get a Pro though, but the black one looks sleek.
Latchless opening!
Any word on if this will work with BootCamp ?
So, no Tablet eh? Hey Apple: I really hope you'll be releasing a tablet by September, when I go back to school, or I'll have to go with a Wintel solution.
The good news is that most Wintel tablets have specs very close to the old Apple x86 Dev Kit, so I'll be able to run a patched copy of OS X anyway. It'd be interesting to see if Inkwell could be made to run on a system like that, considering that many of them embed a standard Wacom digitizer in the screen.
The choice is yours Apple: you can either have people like me as customers, or lose us. I'd rather buy a tablet from you, but will go elsewhere if I have to.
I'm calling BS on this. The jpeg compression around the text makes it look really amateur, apple would never do that. Even a child knows gif or png are better for text.
The Black MacBook is $200 more because it comes standard with a 80GB HD not the 60GB HD of the whites... SO really you're only paying $50 extra for Black ;)
I just peed in my pants...
I wanna one!!!
@#9
It's legit.
http://www.apple.com/macbook/macbook.html
Ha Ha, before you call bs on something go have a look at the apple site...
Yah, apple would never do that...
Integrated Graphics!! NOOOOO!!
#9 @ Retard, living up to your name eh?
Check the apple website.....if you can find it on your own...
On a more serious note, The black macbook looks AMAZING, but whats going on with its pricing... thats a bit steep... how much more can black pigment cost!
Callandor
Quote Retard: "I'm calling BS on this." Wow, you are a retard, it's only posted on the Apple website dumbass.
#9, you calling BS on apple's site? What, somebody hacked into apple to play or apple is playin themselves then...I don't think so.
black one looks nice though, $150 more expensive for color is so politically incorrect :) I'll prolly get black one standard and then add everything esle myself to the max
The iBook is still available for the Education market, although one wonders for how much longer. The black is cool, but if it's the same flimsy white plastic keyboard of the iBook, i'll get a MBPro. I have a PB G4 12" 867Mhz (turns 3 years old this week, my my how he's grown...) and I can't give up the keyboard for the iBook style.
holy crap! I wish they had a $1099 black one though!!! fuckers...
Timmay
200 bucks for 20 gigs of storage space.
Enjoy, suckers.
I'm so confused I don't know whether or not to call Jimmy, atomicone, and Matt retards... Retard's link is to the Apple website.
Man, you people sure have a hard time recognizing irony. . .
Bah, the black looks sh*tty (in pics anyways) - looks like Apple did away with the glossy shell to appease the whiny masses (and class-action lawsuits) by going with your standard micro-texture. The specs also say the screens are glossy, great for flash, terrible for glare. Looks like Apple's stepping away from their established design cues to appeal to the unwashed masses.
The extra 200 bucks is for the extra 20 gigs of HD space. Wow. Thats 10 bucks per gig!!! Talk about pricey!
lets look at it this way, heck of a lot cheaper for apple to make it black than say colorware to do it!!! My only complaint is the integrated graphics. But oh well.... off to order!
The black version has a 80 GB hard drive while the white ones have 60 GB hard drives.
Magnetic lid latch, MagSafe power adaptor, glossy screen, Front Row, built-in camera ...
I'm going to have to check this puppy out at my local Apple Store
The black is cool, but if it's the same flimsy white plastic keyboard of the iBook, i'll get a MBPro.
it's got a new keyboard. check out the "design" page. it looks like the PB one with more rounded keys.
Anyone notice the changes to mbpro? glossy screen and matte screen?
ORDERED ONE!
Delivery time 2-3 days :-D
Black? What a rip off. Apple is just copying HP laptop colors now. Can't they just be original?
/end sarcasm
I saw the video is 64MB shared, but what GPU is it? I couldn't find it anywhere. And $200 for 20GB and black paint is a rip off.
For all intents and purposes, this thing comes with no RAM. Apple has been skimpy on the RAM before, but this is a new low. 2X256?!? Who does that?
I know everyone buys extra RAM for their new computer anyway, but seriously they're not even trying...
maybe its been mentioned before, but has anyone noticed that they have dropped the 1.83ghz, $1999 Pro and bumped it to 2ghz for the same price?
Gold * to Joe Smith and narrativium ;)
WTF - 5.2 pounds??! What are they thinking?!
This is a pound heavier than the G4 12" PowerBook. I thought the whole idea behind switching to Intel was to conserve size and power.
This is a major disappointment, and won't sell so well here in Japan where people predominantly use public transportation and actually have to CARRY their laptops.
guys, #9 was being sarcastic, if you click his name its a link to the apple page confirming it.
Glossy Screen? 2.36kg?
Darn, seems as if I'll have to get a Thinkpad X60s after all.
Thank God himself, they didn't go with glossy black!!! They had the sense to go with matt black, very very sweet indeed ;)
They've also added the glossy monitor as free options on the 15" and 17" MBPs.
Check out the processors!!!! Cool, I did not expect 1.83 & 2.0 Ghz Core Duo. YES!!
superb audio machine and they know it. gigabit ethernet, up to 2GB of memory (even if it is shared with the video chipset), and desktop extension on external displays up to 1920x1200.
if only there were such things as USB EVDOngles.
YAH! It has the sweet charger thingy!
As usual the Irish (and Europeans) get ripped-off!!
Prices starting at:
America = $1,099
Ireland = ?1,199
More units for the Irish again, and they're euros ?1,199 = $1537.84
I give up! Rip-Off Ireland.
If you check you're not paying extra JUST for black, there's an extra 20GB in the black MacBook's HD, not really worth the additional cost though.
The MacBook Pro is still the one to have but then for just over $1000 the MacBook is pretty good considering it has all the features of the MB Pro, just less powerful and smaller. I think Apple should have priced it at $1000 exactly though since that's an easier figure students can convince their parents to cough up.
It still has that single trackpad button though, why? MacOS has supported multi-button mice for years and years yet Apple limits its functionality with the single buttons. Sure you can use the keyboard shortcuts for just about everything but you really shouldn't NEED to.
Very, Very nice. Apple really did a good job on this one. The processers, new keyboard, all the features. I think alot of people are going to get these instead of the MacBook Pro if they dont need high end graphics.
The black one reminds me of the old powerbooks, the ones that they had befor the titanium ones...
5.2 pounds is too heavy and 512MB (the base memory on all (!) models) is too light - especially with shared graphics. Hell, I could buy two PS3s for the price of a BlacBook and still have enough left over for a Wii.
Just placed an order for a black one :)
Hopefully this means they will be announcing the touchscreen video iPod on Thursday night. I highly doubt that will happen but I would be very happy if it did.
Where is the 12-13 inch macbook pro? Apple's gonna make me cry.
i was very tempted by these. the clincher that's made me go with the MBP? the illuminated keyboard. if the macbooks had an illuminated keyboard, i would have ordered it already without a second thought.
I'll pay the premium for the 15" high end MBP or possibly even the 17" [it's only an extra AUD$300 after the edu discount]
Bah apple why make my life so difficult.
I love the matt finish on the black one... and the 13"s
But, the Pros have just had a speed bump.... nnnng choices, choices.
quote: "Hell, I could buy two PS3s for the price of a BlacBook and still have enough left over for a Wii."
what?
you cannot at a super drive to the lower model
iTunes video store? maybe not... Tablet... I don't think so... then what?
Probably just a bumped iPod... or will it be a MacPod? or MacPhone?
Apparently they have a new "magic" battery:
--
Work Longer Unplugged
MacBook offers up to 6 hours of battery life. (2.5 hours of DVD playback, 3.5 hours with wireless turned on.)
--
How does it get more life with wifi on? (From the Wireless page in the product info.)
There is something new coming... they were talking to ad agencies in the U.K. recently, can't tell you what it was about though
Apple MacBook Pro 15" = 2.54kg
Apple MacBook = 2.36kg
Thats 180 grams!
If you wallet can handle it get the MacBook Pro.
Well, the multi-touch sensitivity patent is implemented on the new MacBooks/Pros trackpads, so, that may not be a video iPod related patent.
Loving the new 'books.
Oh apple what have you done?! The macbook pros are too big and look ugly cause of the speakers either side of the keyboard and the macbook pro is an ugly colour (compared with the pros), has a bigger border round the screen and doesn't have a dedicated graphics chip (as far as I can tell). Why can't Apple just make my life easier and release a 12"/13" macbook pro?
I can finally replace my PB15". I hope the MacBook 12" get's better WiFi reception than what the PB15" did.
seeing as how busy steve is lately with the whole disney aquisition, and seeing as how he takes 2 weeks to prep for a keynote speech, and ALSO because people already know what the new ipod will feature (steve likes to make his keynotes for products we wouldnt expect) i have a feeling it would be a good guess to expect a video ipod at the grand opening of the new store! heres to wishful thinking!
anyone else notice the glossy screen?
Am I the only one who thinks these are REALLY ugly?
So what's the differences between the MacBook and the MacBookPro, other than the screen size and case colour?
Why did they put the 80 gig hard drive in the black one instead of the White one? Apple is perpetuating the kind of myth like "black is bigger and better" or "once you go black you can't go back"... I'm outraged! Guys, how can we bring up this issue to Apple's attention?
Read comment 37 re glossy screen
Very cynical marketing from Apple. Charging money for a different colour will only annoy loyal customers. Do we expect black iPods to go up in price next week?
Spoils an otherwise welcome announcement.
INTEL GRAPHICS!!? NOOOOO!!!!! AND ONLY 64 MB OF VRAM......SHARED!!!? I CALL THIS BULLCRAP!
not impressed...
I don't want a glossy screen! I hate glossy screens! No!!!!
website mentions nothing about built in mic. whats going on?
So - with these being duos - there won't be a small-form Macbook Pro? Does everyone think that's a fact now?
Hey this black model looks like a cool Lenovo clone. Nice going Apple! Also, it's got the gma 950 chipset - does that mean it's vista ready?
Also, my $0.02 - this thing is heavier than their old ibooks. Maybe they're releasing something with a slightly smaller screen and lighter weight on Thursday? Maybe, maybe, although someone discounted it, maybe they'll release a tablet version because they have all those touch screen patents collecting dust.
So what is the difference (besides obvious form factor/screen) between the 2.0GHz Macbook and the 2.0GHz Pro? Dedicated graphics card? Is that it?
In response to #61, what the heck are you saying? You can upgrade to the 80G HD for just $50 extra (if you do not want to go with the ultra-sleek black).
The GPU is Intel Intergrated Graphics Accelerator 950.
The black one is over 1000 in the UK store and that's with 512MB of RAM and intergrated graphics. That a lot of money for not much laptop.
This is not good value at all, but the fanboys won't see that.
There is no way Apple would go through the trouble of having a built-in iSight camera without a built-in microphone. The camera would basically be useless. That's just silly. Right?
Yea. I agree Harrison, just noticed that myself. There is no mention of an illuminated keyboard on the Macbooks...funny since the Macbooks, er..ibooks is the platform that the illuminated keyboard was introduced on, and if I had to wager money, I would say home users would use/need that function much more than pro users. Dumb move apple...but ohhh it's flush with the top of the notebook (note sarcasm).
they did an excellent job? what are you people smoking. The design is plain, but hell that is the only reason i would buy it, but it isn't enough of a reason to counterbalance:
-intel onboard shit graphics
-weight
-low memory for the base
going black is just idiotic. and no options for a 7,200 rpm drive? come on
apple equal simple comp for the idiot masses. keep staring at the flashing lights and shiny chrome while they rip you off.
ahhhhhh someone here to give me $1500? the small blackone please ;)
Someone had a problem with the weight of the MacBook. The 12" iBook was 4.9 lbs. and the MacBook is 5.2 lbs. For a bigger screen and bigger HD, I'll tote around an extra .3 lbs. Still, I did pause for a second wondering why the new one is heavier even though it's "a full .25 inches thinner".
Someone else had a problem with the UK and Ireland pricing being so much higher than the US. Just remember, US prices don't reflect sales tax while the UK store (actually, all of Europe) includes VAT. So it's not as bad as it looks.
I was hoping for a Mac with Blu-Ray. are there any plans for a Blu-Ray device.
You know... I spec'd out a Macbook and one with similar features in a Dell - the Macbook really isn't all that much more expensive. The Dell had a bit wider screen and was $150 less.... that's not too much of a premium, IMHO.
And it spans the desktop to an external monitor, not just mirroring the built-in display.
Heavier? Sure you're reading the old 14" weight? I have it as a drop in weight from 5.9 pounds to 5.2.
As for no microphone built in, notice that there's a dot on the left of the iSight (there's one on the right of it as well, but that's for the in-use light).
Furthermore, it has (and this something that the iBooks never had) a line in. This was a major separation between the two computers for a long time.
Any news on when we might see these at the retails stores?
Look people, this is Apple's ENTRY LEVEL machine. Apple is trying to get the AVERAGE JOE to SWITCH from WINDOWS PC to MAC. This machine is the best strategy.
1) The Mini-DVI to DVI connector is extra. How many entry level customers would even know what it's for?
2) No illuminated keyboard necessary for these customers. How often will they be hacking throughout the night in a darken room?
3) Glossy screen standard. It looks better for video.
4) 5400 RPM HDD is fine for a non-power user
5) As is 512MB RAM
6) Why would they need a 256MB dedicated video cards. The target customer is not a gamer!
7) Of course there is a microphone. When have you seen a notebook without a microphone, much less one with a cam for video-conferencing but no mic? (A sign language video cam?)
8) The battery duration represents: 6hrs for non-DVD and non-Wi-Fi usage, 3.5 for Wi-Fi but not DVD usage, and 2.5 for DVD but not Wi-FI usage. They are a bit tricky on this one, I admit.
9) A 60 or 80 GB HDD for 13" laptop is plenty
I'd like to point out some oteher things i've read here too:
1) It has a NEW weighted keyboard. A major complaint. I assume it's similair to the PBs.
2) Uses the NEW multi-touch, scrolling trackpad.
3) No RJ-11 port (that's were you plug in for dialup) Many of these transition customers will need that but a $20 add-on will work swimmingly.
4) What does buying 2 PS3s and a Wii have to do with a notebook computer?
5) For those in other countries, of course you pay more, you don't have to pay sales tax and there are fees for importing our great American products.
6) Steve Jobs was doing a black case on NeXT when everyone else was doing "manilla" cases. Apple isn't copying HP, HP is copying Apple.
I just got this from the Tech Specs on the MacBook:
"Solid-state scrolling trackpad for precise cursor control; supports two-finger scrolling, tap, double-tap, and drag capabilities"
Suggest this has something to do with the patents that Engadget reported a while back - sounds very smart - a trackpad that actually allows dragging without using the buttons!
"funny since the Macbooks, er..ibooks is the platform that the illuminated keyboard was introduced on"
the iBooks never had lit keyboards... let alone introduced the feature. do you have a link showing this backlit iBook keyboard?
$150 more for the black!?
Hey isn't there something in the Constitution about not discriminating between colors?
The backlit keyboard was introduced on the 1st gen 17" PBG4. Which I still own...and still swear by!!!!
"6) Steve Jobs was doing a black case on NeXT when everyone else was doing "manilla" cases. Apple isn't copying HP, HP is copying Apple."
there is also the Mac TV from 1993. and the Bell & Howell Apple ][+ from 1979. both were black.
basically all powerbooks until the titanium were black or dark grey on the earlier ones. 20th Anniversary Mac was sorta black-ish as well.
#86, Ahmed:
It's the same trackpad that have been available in all the MacBook Pros. The only patent pending I recall seeing here on Engagdet were for many more inputs. I believe that is for a future tpuch screen tablet.
Evreyone else:Of course they are charging more for the black case. They know it's what most people will want. They are creating an elitist drive in even their low-end notebooks. Good marketing? I think so.
glossy display-- just like my vaio, which makes it practically useless outdoors, not so excited about this feature
Has anyone noticed the new lid locking mechanism??
MacBook: available in L, XL, and XXL. Unless your laptop spends all day on a desk, or you're one of those guys who carries around a huge, dorky laptop bag, every Macbook is too heavy or too big. I've used Macs exclusively for 20 years now, but at present, Apple doesn't sell a laptop that I would buy.
@#81 Paul,
You forget however that Dell allways has coupons that usually push the price down 20% more. Now if you hate Dells, that may or may not be enough for you to justify the extra premium for an Apple.
