Targus Desktop Security Lock for iPod
With so many people carrying around expensive iPods in their pockets or storing them in their desks, it's little wonder that an industry has sprung up around protecting those valuable little players from theft: even clothing designers like Thomas Pink are trying to get in on the action. And now yet another solution has been announced -- this one from accessories manufacturer Targus -- that promises to keep your precious 'Pod locked down to any stationary object by gripping the dock connector with a combination lock, and not releasing it until you enter the code or someone saws through the galvanized steel cable. "Coming soon" for $30 according to Targus' website, the "Desktop Security Lock for iPod," (no idea why they didn't shorten it to "the iLock") is probably a decent solution for travelers or those whose co-workers have sticky fingers; for round-the-clock peace-of-mind, however, you still can't beat the go-anywhere PodLocker, which always keeps your DAP on your person and forces muggers to rip through your clothes if they want to make off with it.[Via The Gadget Blog]

I dunno if this idea will really take off. It might be somewhat useful if you live in dorms or something.
We need a nano tube cable lock. This thing is too big.
you have got to be kidding me...
idont
heck yea thats good for the dorms, a few months ago a sidekick, a digital SLR, and 4 Ipods were stolen from a bunch of dorm rooms here in alaska, good thing my little nano was on me that weekend.
I know its unrelated, but it's funny to see the story about navio unlocking the iPod and this on the front page at the same time.
You see the problem with this is that people are now more inticed to beat up/kill for an iPod. It's a good idea if you just don't want to get pickpocketed, but in today's world you never know when you'd be walking along and a guy sticks a gun to your head and tells you to give him your iPod.
Or make a self destructing iPod accessory that could be triggered at the owners will... I've always wanted to see a car stereo that did that. A little justice served cold, or firey and painful in this case.
"damn, this ipod is locked to the desk...ill show this person who is cool" (theif yanks dock connector out forcefully breaking the ipod down the middle)
#6...great idea..i had a similar idea on how to deal with the nigerian scammers...
step 1: sell laptop on craigslist
step 2: wait for scammer to ask you for your "last price"
step 3: send them the laptop, except change the battery out with a brick of C4.
step 4: scammer opens up laptop and powers laptop on...
step 5: rinse and repeat
another reason to buy a sandisk -- who's going to steal a piece of crap?
I really wished there was a way that I could lock down my 40 gigger in my JBL On Stage, but then I had an even better idea. I hid my iPod inside my desk drawer, and it stays locked up all day. No one knows it is even there.

I could see this being useful at work. I leave mine in my drawer ... would be nice to be able to lock it when I'm not at my cube ...
Here in Seattle, everyone and their cat has an Ipod it seems. And if it's not an iPod, it's something else. I hardly ever see anyone try to hide that they're listening to a new digital device. Maybe we're just more peaceful here the good ole N.W. or, the criminals up here know that it's not worth 5-10 in the pen to mug someone for a lousy couple hundred dollar music player. Either way, people seem to flaunt that they have one.
#10 Galley. You might want to proof read your site, or do you really mean you want to be conspicuous?
Anyway, I can see this being great in dorms, or in the library when you need to take a piss break. But in my life commuting around the city, my iPod is either in my office (which is secure), my apartment (which is as somewhat secure) or on my person. I'd be bummed if it got stolen though. It's a 1G 5GB one, still working fine after 4 1/2 years. I love the spinning wheel.
If I ever came across an iPod with this type of lock I'd have no choice but to smash it up with a rock or other such hard object.
The pleasure I'd get from seeing the owners face on their return would be immense.
If they integrated USB into that thing, I'd definitely consider it. Or if it was a dock... I would without a doubt get one.
Couldn't you just... you know... put the iPod in your pocket?
now we'll get plenty of stories about people's ipods taken hostage by someone plugging this lock into their ipod and not unlocking it until you pay a ransom. This is assuming the lock doesn't allow pass through for recharging.
They need something like this for 35mm cameras.
Seriously, this will just lead to lots of smashed ipods. If you don't want your ipod getting stolen when you leave the table, put it in your pocket.
Thanks #14 for noting my blunder.
the link went dead, maybe they took it off the market after hearing all ur comments, lol
