HP Pavilion DV6000 and DV9000 laptops
The 15.4 and 17-inch iterations of HP's consumer-centric Pavilion line of laptops have gotten another update from two less-than jaw dropping, at least performance-wise, machines. Both the DV6000 and DV9000 come out of the box with an ExpressCard slot, Altec Lansing speakers, an optional webcam, a 5-in-1 media readers and your choice of an AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core or a plain old AMD Sempron processor. The 7.8-pound DV9000 (replacing the DV8000) sports a 17-inch WXGA (yuck) or WSXGA screen, a dual hard disk configuration and NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 graphics. The 6.5-pound DV6000 (replacing the DV5000) rocks a 15.4-inch WXGA screen, as well as the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7200 card, for a starting price around $850. Things get slightly more impressive on the outside, with same piano black, Zen rock garden-inspired design as the smaller DV2000. The DV6000 is available on HP's website right now for a starting price of $879, but you'll have to sit and meditate a little longer while they prepare the DV9000.

The wedding pic on the screen is cracking me up! When I think "laptop", "wedding photo" is the next natural association.

HP can't make consumer computers worth a flip. No one should encourage them by purchasing one of these. They probably can't be upgraded, either, just like their desktops can't. A Dell would be better. I don't have any complaints regarding the Latitudes we use at work.
Gorek @ Jul 12th 2006 11:22AM
the DV8000 series were great laptops, best laptop for gaming under 3 grand. They are as upgradeable as any laptop, just like current HP desktops. When it comes to upgrading anyway all consumers upgrade is memory anyway maybe a harddrive but that is rare. Don't talk if you haven't used or seen one for a few years, and don't know the needs of your average consumer, even a gamer buying a laptop.
jasondefaoite @ Jul 12th 2006 12:03PM
Abby, you could be right ... I don't think any laptops can beat Dell in terms of their "explosive" power... From a safety perspective alone the HP would be a better choice.
AndrewNeo @ Jul 12th 2006 12:59PM
Abbydon: I have a dv4405nr and love it. You can definately upgrade parts of it, HD, CD drive, memory, wifi, even the processor. I don't know about video because mine's integrated. I'm going to add some more RAM to mine because 512mb with 128 of it being eaten by the video card isn't quite enough, so I had HP send me a manual, and it tells you how to take the entire thing apart and how to replace just about everything.

the DV6000 seems like a decent enough machine if you just really dont like buying from Apple...
$1600 will get you about what the $2000 macbook pro (though you can't get a processor or graphics card as wuick as the MBPs)
then again, for the extra $400, i'd much rather have a prettier, more stable machine that can not only run XP but also OS X. ...but that's just me.
(This does remind me that Apple's laptop prices really aren't that terrible for what they offer)

I know about computers. I've been dealing with them long enough. And I've had plenty of experience with HP's desktops, starting with the Pavilion 6630. That thing is trapped on Windows 98. Even HP has said that you can't put another OS on it. I found another blog where someone tested every OS on it. The sound would not function (even when onboard is disabled and card is used!) on anything but 98. That is exactly the results I had with it. Also, since everything is onboard, it takes a lot of tinkering to override them and use cards. The USB ports die within a year or two. The CD-ROM dies within 3. I've had this problem with the 6630 and 310n. Not much room to expand memory, either. Plus, they use older parts. For instance, the 1.1Ghz I have has a 100Mhz bus! That's the same as the 500Mhz one I have! The 200Mhz Cyrix I built MANY years ago kept on ticking, including all the parts (CD-ROM, etc), until the fan died and it overheaded one night. I don't care what you say - HP sucks. It has no durability or longevity. Sure, it might be good for those people who have no idea what to do with their money, but for those of us who want stuff to last 6+ years, HP isn't it.
As far as Dell laptop explosions, I don't know what to tell you. We use them internally and every single one of our portable fingerpriting units have them. Not a single problem yet. Some of them have been out in the field for years now. And you want safety? Every HP I've touched has shocked the hell out of me when I touch a cable. Pretty bad when I have to pull the power just to move a USB cable. And no, it's not a static shock. I know the difference.

I have DV8000 and love it, great machine...
I also have my old custom Pav that I got in 2000 and it is still going strong and I have been able to upgrade it no problem throughout the years.
I think HP has and still makes great machines.

I like it. I also found coupons for it at http://www.whatsyourdeal.com/forums/hp-coupon.html
If you prefer there are dell coupons too.

Well I've got a DV6059 on order. I'm gonna try overclocking it with "clockgen". Just don't buy anything lower than a TL-52! That's all I can say!

How ANYONE could recommend a Dell notebook right now is beyond me!? They are the most UGLIEST things I have ever seen in my life...(white trim and silver???---YUCK!) I don't argue that you can get top of the line 'everything' in a Dell but I want my machine to look just as hot as it performs and lets face it...Dell is NOT cutting it in that department lately...(even their XPS line is ugly!) These new notebooks from HP (the 15.4" and 17" models) both have Vista ready PREMIUM NVidia GPU's in them), and the machines are simply breathtaking to look at! They are by far the hottest looking notebook computers (in the PC world) that I have ever seen! Buy one, you won't regret it! I'm currently waiting for my HP DV6000Z (CTO) to be built and shipped, I can't wait!

So, I thought I would be sly and order a Pavilion dv6000z on the HP website. I stacked this thing with all the best gizzmos: fastest AMD Turion X2 64 (1.60 GHz), 2 GB of memory, big 100 GB SATA HD, best 256 MB video card, and all the wireless features available, which included Bluetooth. Boy, I was really disappointed. I have just FedEx'd this thing back to HP (tracking #790518230181 if you want to watch) for a refund. I either got a bum laptop, or HP just threw a bunch of faster components at a poorly-desinged machine in the hopes of rescuing the line. On top of the poor performance, the noteboook lid wouldn't open without considerable force -- and that oftentimes meant the base came off the table while moving the stiff display back into a viewable position. The wireless and mousepad constantly fought - causing more than one freezup of the machine.
I ran some PassMark performance tests and was only scoring in the low 300-ish range. That shocked me, based on my perceived performance parts inside. The biggest slowdown was that SATA HD, which had +/- 4 Mb/sec in/out. Very disappointing.
The case has an interesting HP imprint design. Eh. Not that pretty, really. And it's sooo slippery, that it would be easy to drop this thing if your hands were damp with perspiration.
I think I'll consider a Toshiba Satellite A100 perhaps. Comparable price, and I've had good luck with Toshiba.
HP should stick to printers, overpriced ink, and mediocre cameras. I just hope the HP Healthcare product lines don't suck as bad as this.

Hi there everyone!!!
I just want to let you guys know that my eyes was on this computer (DV9000) for so long now from the time it was just a rumour that it will come out soon. When it came out last week on that same very first day it got out I order this monster to come home to papa. I bought the DV9000 with of course AMD Turion 64 x2 2ghz, with 512mb, 160gb HD (I already ordered the 2gb memory and 320gb HD...yes...2x of 160gb HD from mwave.com), with 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050), HP IMPRINT Finish + Microphone + Webcam, LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer, 802.11a/b/g WLAN & Bluetooth, WinXP Pro, & HP Mobile Remote Control. I can't wait to get this beast and install all those stuff to it. LOVE IT BABY!!!
Now I can Dj with confidence when I use my Serato now.

Did you get the remote with it or pay for it?

HP makes some of the highest quality laptops on the market. They only recently began releasing models that cater to more power hungry consumers, but an HP will outlast any dell in the durability department. They will sell thousands of these.
HP's desktops are also top notch. The problems they had in one series of desktops made almost 8 years ago don't apply to any machine they market today. And mind you, the Pavilion 5000 series sitting in the back of my room right now has been reliably running all day every day for the last 5 years without ever giving me a problem - including surviving hurricane Katrina.
And who buys a laptop and keeps it for 6+ years anyway? Or gets shocked pulling a USB cable.
