Unboxing the new Mighty Mouse
While we're certainly not rushing out to snatch up Apple's new Wireless Mighty Mouse, the heavy response to this Bluetooth-equipped rodent makes us think that a lot of you Macheads out there are eager to learn more before laying down your $70. With that in mind, we figured a full gallery of unboxing photos would be just the cure for your Mighty Mouse jones. Keep on reading for a few more pics -- including a comparative shot with the wired version (spoiler: they look exactly alike, save for the "tail") -- and then hit up the Read link to check out the entire set...

does the fact that it's laser mean no more mouse image when holding the mouse just so off the desk?
Adrian @ Jul 27th 2006 2:04PM
Wow not bad hey
finally got wireless lol..
Scott @ Jul 27th 2006 2:07PM
Funny, I posted the "Read link dead" comment but commenter #1 and I are different people...lol
brian @ Jul 27th 2006 2:08PM
Is the wired mouse's scroll bar a darker color or does it become that way after "normal" use?
Scott @ Jul 27th 2006 2:11PM
OK, I take that back. It works fine. I'm sorry for all these comments.
dan @ Jul 27th 2006 2:11PM
I got one of these yesterday afternoon. It's really nice, seems to work well too. It's nice that you only have to put one batter in too, makes the battery weight less of an issue.
Jonathan Bruck @ Jul 27th 2006 2:13PM
Just got mine and its great. I was sitting on a $50 credit due to the ipod class action suit, and I liked the wired mouse enough that it was an easy decision.
Paix247 @ Jul 27th 2006 2:18PM
I got my notebook bluetooth Logitech mouse from CompUSA for $19.95 after mail-in rebate about 4 months ago. It is so much better than the mighty mouse & it matches my MBP.
Scott @ Jul 27th 2006 2:20PM
Just kidding, it doesn't work. I'm not sorry, I never was.
Eli @ Jul 27th 2006 2:21PM
Good god that thing is useless. I always have both fingers sitting on the mouse, so it freaks out and can't figure out which button to click.
The scroll ball thing is cool though. Microsoft's horizontal scrolling needs some work.
tofu713 @ Jul 27th 2006 2:22PM
i like mine too. I wonder if like colorware is going to get into the accessories market so i can get these in different colors. :P
Scott (Not Really) @ Jul 27th 2006 2:24PM
Link is temperamental (sp?) - works sometimes. Page is just a large collection of images, if the link doesn't work you pretty much get the idea from the photos above. --- I haven't used an external mouse in a long time though. Only time I seem to miss it is when I'm trying to play a first person shooter game and I get my butt kicked trying to control the aiming with the track pad.
Andres @ Jul 27th 2006 2:30PM
I just got the mouse yesterday. I love it! I wouldn't exactly say that it's worth every penny... but if your able to afford a mac in general, then your probably willing enough to fork up the cash for their random accessories as well.
I find that the right click doesn't always work perfect, but overall it's pretty sweet.
Thanks for the nice Lithium Ion batteries too apple.
Tobias @ Jul 27th 2006 2:34PM
Hey guys! My site is down due a lot, and I mean a lot of traffic. I upped the pics to flickr too: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tobias-digital/sets/72157594213650928/show/
Cheers, Tobias
crescentdave @ Jul 27th 2006 2:36PM
Bless the applet who consumes ... "I find that the right click doesn't always work perfect, but overall it's pretty sweet."
And all for "just" $70. What a DEAL!
mnemo @ Jul 27th 2006 2:41PM
Just wondering if anyone else can link to other bluetooth mice out there? Otherwise I really do like the MM.
Lobato @ Jul 27th 2006 2:46PM
Andres:
The thing on the "right click" not always working is that you have to lift your finger from the left button before right-clicking.
If the mouse "sees" both fingers on the mouse when there is a click, it will default to left-clicking.
Padriac @ Jul 27th 2006 2:51PM
A mouse can be called "truly wireless" if it does not require *any* wires to be plugged in. It doesn't matter if it's the mouse wire itself or a docking cradle or a 2.4 ghz receiver: if you need to plug something into your computer for your mouse to work, your mouse is not truly wireless. Period.
That said, I think the Apple Mighty Mouse might be one of the only truly wireless laser mice in existence (correct me if I'm wrong). Even if there are some others, the playing field is extremely small. As far as truly wireless laser mice go, the Mighty Mouse is practically the only game in town. Other design high points that most overlook are:
a) works the same for lefty's and righty's.
b) doesn't look like some weird robotic beetle (see: Microsoft Mice).
But yeah, it's a tad too expensive (just a tad: remember that it is bluetooth) and the right click is not for everyone (read: gamers).
Kenundrum @ Jul 27th 2006 2:54PM
My BT mouse of choice is the Stowaway BT mouse found at http://www.thinkoutside.com/products/msbtue/btmouse_product.html
The silver one is ugly- i've got the black and it's very nice. works great and is also compatible with many PDAs. it's expensive but i got it from Amazon.com bundled with the stowaway BT keyboard and got a good deal. it runs on 2 AAA batteries and they last months. i use rechargables and dont worry about wasting anything.
I'm pretty sure that most BT mice are in the $70US range... the Microsoft BT mouse is about $50 but doesn't work well for my left handedness and is way too big.
Jeff @ Jul 27th 2006 3:01PM
I was hoping that they'd address some of the issues with the Mighty Mouse before releasing the wireless version. Still no practical way to clean the scroll ball or the internal switches?
Omar Jabbar @ Jul 27th 2006 3:03PM
Anyone tried the Mouse BT? If so, how does it rock?
http://www.allmouse.com.tw/TMBT.htm
Octavus @ Jul 27th 2006 3:04PM
Padriac:
Every bluetooth mouse with batteries is a wireless mouse. Most have more than 2 buttons and are cheaper.
plexxer @ Jul 27th 2006 3:07PM

This is, truly, one of the dumbest things I have ever read. Truly.
nub @ Jul 27th 2006 3:13PM
you have to lift off your left finger if you want to right click? what a joke.
But the scrolling eraser head thing is really cool.
And about the truly wireless thing...what the fuck are you talking about? Thats the dumbest thing Ive EVER heard.
Im pretty sure logitech came out with a bluetooth laser mouse like a year ago...I would know since I have it, and I suppose it meets your definition of wirless since it only has a USB nub that plugs into the computer (since it doesn't have bluetooth).
Matt @ Jul 27th 2006 3:18PM
I have used The Mouse BT and it actually sucks. I tried it about a year or so ago. I have the corded The Mouse and i love it. The mouse BT kept loosing its pairing with my mac.
Omar @ Jul 27th 2006 3:18PM
Oh, almost forgot. This is a wired mouse, but I'd like to know if anyone's using it and how it performs.
http://www.razerpro.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=26
In case anyone's wondering, I'm looking to replace my wired MM, but as I don't imagine the new MM's scroll ball is any different from the one on mine, there's no way I'm shelling out money for it.
Padriac @ Jul 27th 2006 3:18PM
Yes any bluetooth mouse with batteries is a wireless mouse. But, how many bluetooth mice that don't require cradle/receivers are there, really? I can think of one that is still in production, Mighy Mouse aside.
Plexxor: hope you enjoy lugging around your extra adapters/receivers/cradles in your laptop bag. Ass.
DC @ Jul 27th 2006 3:27PM
I wonder if Apple is paying royalties to Viacom for use of the name "Mighty Mouse."

1) This mouse is not that expensive. Compare is to other wireless laser mice, especially bluetooth ones.
2) Why are people still surprised that Apple prices things a little higher? They always have been and always will be. When Louis Vuitton, Gucci, or Ferrari announce pricing do people bitch and whine too? No. People don't expect cheaply priced things from them. Neither should you from Apple.
Eric @ Jul 27th 2006 3:34PM
Padriac:
Uhm macs have BT built in, that's why you dont have to plug it in. If you didn't have BT and used this mouse with a BT receiver in your USB port, then you're saying it's not wireless then? That's why people think you're a dumbass.
diulei @ Jul 27th 2006 3:36PM
DC: Yes, they are. Check the Apple site. When the original Mighty Mouse was announced, they had a footnote at the bottom of the page. I'm sure something should still be there.
D2 @ Jul 27th 2006 3:36PM
Padriac: I think you just got confused by the inclusion of some mouse docking cradles that double as USB bluetooth adapters (found in keyboard/mouse combos). Bluetooth mice that come with Bt adapters, even if it doubles as a docking station, dont have to paired with the included device.
tnkgrl @ Jul 27th 2006 3:56PM
I have a Mighty Mouse at work so I just upgraded from a "The Mouse BT" to the Wireless Mighty Mouse at home and the Mighty Mouse is a lot better :)
Tracking is smoother and more precise, almost as good as a wired mouse... "The Mouse BT" is a nice mouse but tracking is noticably worse than a wired mouse and it eats batteries!
Anyone want to buy my mint condition "The Mouse BT"?
crescentdave @ Jul 27th 2006 3:59PM
The right click isn't for everyone? Yeah- think of all those folks who want to cut their options in half. Without choice, it's so much simpler ...
Chris @ Jul 27th 2006 4:04PM
eugene, to answer your question, No the wireless MM does NOT project the image like the wired version :(
I really like mine, no issues, does just what it is suppossed to, kinda like all the other apple products hmm go figure. Not bad for a little plastic bar of soap (Trogdor Rules!)
Padriac @ Jul 27th 2006 4:08PM
Yes, I realize that if your mouse doesn't have cord sticking out of it then it is "wireless". However, when this wireless mouse is working via a receiver that sits on your desk and is connected to your computer by a *wire*, then what we really have is "less wired" or "almost wireless". This is an Apple Mouse and Macs have Bluetooth built-in. Plugging in a 2.4ghz receiver to a computer that has built-in Bluetooth is just silly. Does nobody else see the irony of opening the packaging for your brand new wireless mouse and pulling out a wire? It's like getting something "free with purchase". If you have to buy product A to get product B, product B is not truly free.
There are 2 aspects to a wireless mouse: not having a wire directly in your way and not having to worry about plugging anything into your computer for it to function. That latter point that necessitates a receiver for a signal or a cradle to keep a charge might seem like no big deal on a desktop, but switch the scenario to a mobile user and your "wireless" mouse is just as much of a hassle as your "wired" mouse. You have to keep plugging a wire into your computer to use the mouse in either case, pretty much defeating the purpose.
D2: Couple of seconds of reading... V270 is not laser, it's optical.
Short rephrasing of my question: I'm looking for a Bluetooth mouse that uses standard batteries (thus requiring *NO* wires) and features *laser* tracking. Anyone?
Julian @ Jul 27th 2006 4:08PM
I hate to agree with padriac, but I actually do. There are not many LASER mouses that support bluetooth out there. If you need laser, you usually get an ugly dongle and a propietary rf protocol.
Tom @ Jul 27th 2006 4:09PM
Thats one ugly mouse.
James Maeng @ Jul 27th 2006 4:10PM
Just a question, does the mouse have an on/off button?
I currently have the Logitech MX1000 Bluetooth mouse. It's really ergonomic, rechargeable, easy to setup and the mouse buttons are configured for Expose out of the box. Also, it's "truly" wireless so you don't have to use the BT dongle.
I'll agree that the price of the mighty mouse is reasonable for a laser and bluetooth. I'd say it's the best choice for lefties.
js @ Jul 27th 2006 4:11PM
@diulei
Louis Vuitton's, Gucci's, and Ferrari's aren't made in China.
Padriac @ Jul 27th 2006 4:16PM
Julian, not sure why you hate to agree with me (what did I do?), but thanks for making my point in far less space than I did.
Paul @ Jul 27th 2006 4:35PM
Joshua brings up a valid point: many people *might* choose the MM because it doesn't look like some melted alien goo covered with buttons and faux brushed metal.
plexxer @ Jul 27th 2006 4:39PM
Padriac:
I don't lug around anything extra around in my laptop bag because my powerbook already has an excellent input device on it. Why do I need a mouse?
In addition, my wife has an Apple G4 iBook and your truly "wireless" mouse wouldn't work on her computer without a USB adapter. I think for the price, they should have included a BT dongle for the majority of Apple notebook owners without BT built-in.
Wonderboy @ Jul 27th 2006 4:57PM
Padriac, you're an idiot. I've got a wireless mouse on my desktop pc and it's got a cradle to recharge the mouse rather than have to replace the batteries. I've got my pc hooked up to my tv and if I've got friends over and we want to watch a movie, I don't want to have to go find batteries, I just re-cradle my mouse every night and it's always good to go.
When I was shopping for a wireless mouse, I was absolutely adamant about getting one with a cradle, if I saw a cradle-less mouse I just kept walking. I need the cradle for (1) recharging, (2) the receiver, otherwise my hdtv, pc, router, cable modem, surround sound, etc. all interferes with the signal, and (3) having a neat/tidy place to put my mouse when not in use.
Just remember, not everyone uses their wireless mice the exact same way you do.
Lou @ Jul 27th 2006 5:13PM
I love Apple products, but their accessories leave a lot to be desired. I love my wired laser intellimouse that replaced my bluetooth Apple Mouse. I want to get rid of my mac keyboard too as it has the most awkward buttons (if you don't press straight down, it doesn't push).
Also, I think that wireless mice were invented by the battery companies because they have been losing out on the computer peripheral market.
Robby Valles @ Jul 27th 2006 5:20PM
Who purchased this at a retail store? I haven't been able to find it in southern california yet. Does anyone know where i can get it today? Send me a message!! Thanks!
Jonathan @ Jul 27th 2006 5:47PM
Robby: Just order it online. If you're in CA, it should ship almost immidiately and get there in 1-2 days. Free shipping. Apple stores probably won't get it until next week anyway.
AndyH @ Jul 27th 2006 5:52PM
Joshua James writes:
"Thinking about the MM, assuming BT makes it work with any computer, but where is the scroll wheel?"
The scroll "wheel" is that tiny little "ball" at the top of the mouse. More pics here on Apple's site:
