Skywalker jet packs in development
No matter how played flying cars, kayaks, and other strange contraptions are, the allure of a jet pack strapped onto your back just doesn't seem to lose its luster. Rick Herron, creator of Skywalker Jets, has devised a rocket pack that weighs about 90 pounds and can propel a 200 pound pilot around the air for what is likely the most invigorating 5 minutes of their life. The crazy part is this thing actually works, and it doesn't get your backside all crispy in the process. Rick plans on producing a finalized model that has a range of about 4 miles and includes a GPS unit integrated into a HUD showing flight time and engine information among other things. A prototype build solicited a bid over 10 grand from a hopeful buyer (or helpless Star Wars fan), and this project hopefully won't end here -- Rick plans to get the device approved by the FAA and available to anxious customers as soon as possible, and the good news is that becoming a rocketeer will only cost you a cool $200,000 if it goes into production.

Safety isn't an issue, just attach a ballistic 'chute. Otherwise it's a pretty good idea done insipidly: there's no directional stabilty built into the design. He'd be better off using thrust vectoring and larger engines for a safer reserve power band.
this was on ebay not to long ago,it said for lookks only, not operational
The eBay auction was to sell the pack for display. So he could build a new pack instedad of taking the one he has apart and rebuilding it. I have been to his website where he said he is rebuilding the one in the photo. I am excited someone has finaly building a real jet pack that can fly as long as he said. I looked up the information on those engines. And his calculations for fuel consumption, does confirm the flight time he has stated.
i say they should install ejection seats just incase you have the police on jetpacks right behind you or are about to crash into a mall or say the world trade centre.
I think it's great! Yeah it needs a parachute capable of slowing you and the rig safely, but with that, it's no more dangerous than some ultralights I've seen. I am amazed that it's taken this long for someone to build one. It could have a bladder type fuel system like the aircraft so the lighter you are, the more fuel you can carry. I'm only 23 pounds lighter than the inventor but that's over 2 gallons of fuel. All pilots know you can't just fill the tank and take off, even ultralight pilots. You calculate your weight and fuel accordingly. I work 6 miles away. What a rush. The only problem is all the killjoys saying you can't fly over cities or populated areas. Cops will have all the fun.
why cant they use two larger jets with a parachute in the middle just in case you run out of fuel

The police and other secret services should start improving jetpacks to be more safe because they can become very usefull to reach the top of tall buildings quicker than a lift
