Cingular 3125 / HTC Star Trek now shipping
So after a bit of a wait Cingular went ahead and launched the 3125 today in line with that September launch grid we peeped last week. This re-branded HTC Star Trek will set you back $149 after online discounts assuming you go for the ol' 2-year contract, that is. And yeah, we'll run down the specs on this WinMo flip one last time for ya: Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone, 1.3 megapixel cam, Bluetooth, Direct Push mail, quad-band GSM with GPRS/EDGE, 128MB ROM / 64MB RAM and a 2.2-inch TFT display all powered by a 200 MHz TI proc. So giddy up dog, just don't tell 'em Engadget sent ya.

what a ugly-ass phone.
Ugly assed? You must about 15. ~~~Lia
I really like this phone. I have a treo 700 and this would be a great compliment for weekend out on the town time and not so clunky
Adam:
I agree, I'm picking one up to complement my MDA. I'm waiting for first reports of unlocking/ROM flashing though.
i have a dopod s300, on t-mobile, i bought overseas which is the identical model. i think its a great phone, but honestly i can tell you that the only reason i think its a great phone is because i am hooked on the MS mobile OS. (i've used it for several years now and really find it difficult to use other phones. the predictive dialing is excellent.)
I have 1 major issue with the star-trek. it seems to me that the radio antenna is terrible. I will be in the car with my wife (also on t-mobile) and her phone (RAZR) will show full bars of service, and my phone will be "searching..." I bought an exterior antenna to use while in the car but its ackward, the adapter on the back of the phone is some random arbitrary connector that does not really work all that well...
I have the exact same problem. Did you find a solution? Thank you.
This phone has no external antena correct? I went to cingular's page and it doesn't look like it does, but then there is another picture that shows an external antena - however that picture looks like an LG phone to me.
looks aren't everything, but man, that's uuuuugly.
Taking a look at the phone in person makes a difference. Nice phone!
I can't believe the got away with putting the name "Star Trek" on something that ugly!
can anyone actually see the phone on the cingular site? or am i just blind??
besides the LCARS inspired font(maybe?), why is this thing called the star trek?
It is too "new" for the old episodes and too "old" (i.e. does not fasten to your lapel) for the newer episodes.
unless you can set the ring tone to that naval whistle, this thing is joke.
I don't see it on the site either.
"Specified device is not available"
from the site
The phone was listed on the Cingular site half an hour ago, but they've already pulled it. :( Hopefully it will be back soon.
heh, they probably pulled it to discredit engadget, and have sent tips off to every other tech blog saying exactly when it will officially be on the cingular site...
It's not on their corporate premier site either but they added the Pantech C120. (in silver not in black)
The specs on the other Startrk phones are not the same as the Cingular one. The Cingular one has 128MB ROM space and a larger battery....
I upgraded on the site about 45 minutes ago when it was still up. 20 minutes later I went to check to see if they had accessories listed (right) and it was no longer listed.
I have been waiting for years for a cell phone modeled after a Star Trek communicator. It could even sell for a premium. Am I alone in this desire?
coprock:
i am positive you arent the only one... a quick trip to the star trek experience in vegas
i believe shattner's character in boston legal has a star trek communicator sound theme on his cell phone though, the producers of that show love poking fun at their actors portfolios.
my above post shouldve said:
"... a quick trip to the star trek experience in vegas WOULD CONFIRM THAT ONE"
If I'm going to get a phone called Star Trek, I would hope it's this instead:

This phone has been available for a long time on ebay. It works with Cingular and Tmobile. I've had mine about 3 months and its been problem-free and it syncs with my Exchange server at work as well as lets me tether my laptop to use it as a dialup-connection. It's awesome.
Saw a 3125 at a Cingular corp store in Orange Co, CA today, they have them in stock ready to go. It is fantastic, beautiful, and breath taking, all in one. Think Razr, thinner, sleaker, but a bit longer. The outside screen is the only oddity, but it's set up with play/pause, ff & rw buttons for music while closed. Could be nice.
I have a 8125 for weekdays and a SP3 (SMT-5600) for weekends. From using both, I can tell you that the text limitations of dial pad are outweighed by the dialing limitations of WM5 screen dialpad IMO. So if phone use is the primary need, then the 3125 is a winner, and on my radar.
However, a bit of proding, digging, and listening in and I did get that the Samsung i320 is headed for Cingular very soon (maybe even this month?) So I'll wait, just to see.
