Circuit City to sell $100 Compaq laptop on Black Friday
With all this talk about OLPC's mythical $100 laptop, it was only a matter of time before a more established brand-name company tried its hand at pulling off a similar trick without NickNeg and company. CNET reports that Circuit City will be selling a Compaq Presario model on Black Friday (that's the day after Thanksgiving, or November 24, for you non-Yanks) for $100, sorta. If you agree to get a Vonage subscription for a year and can handle the assorted rebates, then this lappy is yours for a Benjamin. That's not such a bad deal, considering it comes with a Celeron M 420 CPU, 15-inch screen, DVD and CD burner, 512MB RAM and a 60GB hard drive. Of course this isn't the first time that we've seen rebates drive down computer prices so much -- there was the HP setup that we saw over Labor Day, which included a CRT, and a burner for the same price after rebates too -- but a laptop is something to take stock of. It's very tempting, but we'll wait until the price drops that low organically, sans rebates and subscription plans, thanks.

OLPC, but only if we can get a bunch of nationals to line up for 'em at 5:00 in the morning the day after Thanksgiving.
I know this dentist who knows some people...

Looks like my daughter will finally get that laptop that she (doesn't) need.
fred @ Nov 17th 2006 11:21AM
Does it come with the picture of that burn victim on the dekstop? I'll pass.

Why the eff can't verizon do this with their ev-do service, that lappy cant costmuch more than a decent smartphone.
mespinosam @ Nov 17th 2006 11:30AM
Now i see where are those sony recalled batteries being used..
Dimitri @ Nov 17th 2006 11:54AM
In the end, it costs MORE than $100, even after the rebates.
There's a HUGE difference between a rebate, and a (so-called) rebate that requires making ADDITIONAL purchases before it can be redeemed.

I got the same laptop earlier this year for $499, but with a 14" screen, 256 ram, 40 gb HD, no DVD burner, and no wi-fi. So, even at $299, this is a screaming deal.

Man bfads sucks this year. They rarely get the ads up as quickly as the other sites, and keep posting stuff that has nothing to do with black friday :(

What about those of us who are already Vonage customers. Shouldn't we be rewarded for our loyalty by getting the deal as well? I am sick and tired of companies giving something away to new subscribers while existing customers get jack!!!
heath @ Nov 17th 2006 1:18PM
they will be getting a whopping 16 of these at the circuit city here in my town in ga.. not exactly and incredible number...good luck fighting your way into the fray for one of these

What about those who do not qualify for Vonage because they will not sell service unless they are capible of E911? I live in such an area and was trying to switch VOIP companies but Vonage refused to give me service.

I actually bought this laptop last night at best buy for $499 for our non-profit organization.

I sent an email to Vonage about this. I am an existing Vonage customer and I think I deserve this deal just as much as any current non-paying Vonage customer who is just signing up!

I snagged a very similar laptop at Walmart 3 weeks ago for $398. It has the AMD Turion processor, and works great. This is an outrageous deal at $99. I predict PS3 type riots for this thing. Good luck to you clowns who will fight the crowds at 5am. Not me!

There's what, three per store? I'm not going to camp out from now till then and beat down Grandma for a cheap Laptop.
N2 @ Nov 17th 2006 4:18PM
How much is Vonage and how long is the term? If it's $30+ a month for a year, it might be better just to buy the laptop without the deal.
Michael @ Nov 17th 2006 6:24PM
Microcenter had this Vonage deal going on a little while ago where you could save $200 on anything computer related if you signed up for a year. I went to check it out only to discover you also have to buy a $50 router (or whatever it's called) although you get that money back in rebate, and there was also a $30 sign up fee and so on. Not such a hot deal after all. I passed.

Hey, i got a laptop for 4.98 at Walmart, check out these specs amateurs, this baby's my prime gamin machine w/ 128 Mb HD, 2 megs of memory, 2.5 inch screen, and it runs Microsoft Bob. Ya, don't be jealous, after all, if you have the extreeme wealth like me, you could afford it.
chenry @ Nov 18th 2006 3:50PM
