ok, I have an August 2009 macbook pro with a matte screen and have had the flickering problem since I bought it. I have not taken it in to be serviced since I can not afford the downtime. I finally found a solution that works for me. If I turn the brightness down one click my screen does not flicker but the screen is then to dim. Well I found out this morning that just like audio adjustments you can make fine brightness adjustments by holding down the alt and shift keys while pressing the increase or decrease brightness button. The difference in brightness is negligible but the flickering stops! This is probably not good for color calibration but is at least a way to save your sanity.
