When AT&T's
Homezone service launched several months ago, we were dismayed to learn that what appeared to be a pretty
capable high definition box,
didn't actually have any HDTV content available for it. That shortcoming may be on its way to a resolution as
Akimbo has revealed its VOD content, including HD, will be available to subscribers this month. We talked to
"Mr. Akimbo" Josh Goldman himself this evening, and while we weren't able to take a look at the box in action we're definitely excited to hear there is some worthwhile (read: HD) content on the way, which should be enhanced soon by more content providers joining
the platform.
So there normal model is to charge both a monthly access fee + fee's for most of the decent content, classic double dipping. Are they going to waive the monthly fee's for people with AT&T boxes? That would certainly make there service a bit more attractive. Course a lot of the content is pretty pricey and is time bomb DRM riddled pretty much defeating the point of DVR (I can keep how long, six while seconds before being charged again? feh). Akimbo is a classic example of how people with a good idea get screwed on their buinsess by trying to play nice with the greedy IP owners.
currently have homezone and so far no hd for me.
have read about the new box, but nothing in hd so far. hope it happens soon. you can keep downloaded movies for 24 hours. you can download it anytime, but are not charged until you actually watch it. so if you download on monday, but dont watch until wed. Wed. is when you get charged. also the webremote is a pretty cool feature.
