Samsung's Ultra Edition 10.9 to oust D900 as "world's slimmest slider"
Witnessing the dethroning of one crown thanks to a determined competitor is anything but surprising, but it seems that Samsung is ousting one of its own in order to make room for a newer champion, as the Ultra Edition 10.9 takes over where the D900 left off as the "world's thinnest slider." Continuing on Samsung's recent infatuation with creating increasingly slim mobiles, the 10.9's biggest feature is its ultrathin frame, as the spec list really doesn't deviate from what we found on the previous title holder. Onboard, you'll find a 3.2-megapixel camera, MP3 / video playback, Bluetooth, video output, 80MB of internal memory, and a built-in microSD slot for loading up additional media. Little more is known about the 10.9 as of now, but just about every detail you could need should be divulged during the 3GSM Congress in Barcelona next month.[Via Unwired View]

comrade @ Jan 22nd 2007 11:21AM
Looks very last century. Almost looks retro.
(sorry, I've been offline for a few days)
JRA219psu @ Jan 22nd 2007 11:21AM
agreed mack. this phone is unbelievable. As soon as these hit the market, I will be trying to get one here in the states
Xinyu @ Jan 22nd 2007 11:33AM
All look, no substance. iPhone will own this easily.
Gil @ Jan 22nd 2007 11:37AM
You CANNOT be serious!
Alex C @ Jan 22nd 2007 12:17PM
No it really does look a bit dated, like one of those Rio mp3 players. I really don't need my phone to be less than 12mm thick. The D900 was fine! It's already a bit thin for holding while you text as it is.
comrade @ Jan 22nd 2007 12:24PM
Well yeah. We were using sliders in the late 90s, weren't we?
I'm just bored with the whole phone form and use factor and looking forward to a _communication_ device. I use chat much more than the phone, just like I use chat much more than email. And I use my web browser on my Treo probably more than the phone function. Get rid of the keys and give me a nice wide screen.

*sigh* Looks like every phone from here on in is going to be compared to the iPhone. The iPhone is taking on Blackberrys, not fashion phones like this. My lady has the D900, and that's lovely, so this will be shit hot.
Silver R. Wolfe @ Jan 22nd 2007 12:17PM
Wow Apple, thanks for bringing ignorance to an all-time high!
The iPhone isn't made to combat basic phones. You know, phones that are actually phones and not PDA/Phones/Mp3.
This phone will totally rock if they keep everything about the D900 intact aside from the size. Yummy yummy Sammy goodness.
Dave @ Jan 22nd 2007 12:30PM
The iPhone actually doesn't compete well with anything but the kitchen sink Mp3 phone crowd.
1. It is too big and has no hardware buttons to be a normal phone.
2. It completely lacks 3rd party software support and corporate push email so it doesn't compete with any of the Smart/PDA phones on the market for business.
It is a very stylish MP3 phone with smartphone like features.
Now back on topic... damn that Samsung is slim!
FlamingGhost @ Jan 22nd 2007 12:57PM
I live in the UK, I had this phone. Its really bad, the pictures mess up with lines across them, and the phone has no functions other then the camera. I took it back and got the Nokia n73, its alot better!!
Pete xx
Leoedin @ Jan 22nd 2007 2:20PM
you realise this phone isn't actually out yet?
oooh @ Jan 22nd 2007 2:28PM
Will it have the Cingular 850 frequency?
ysfatlcnntn @ Jan 22nd 2007 2:21PM
umm how can u have had this phone if "Little more is known about the 10.9 as of now, but just about every detail you could need should be divulged during the 3GSM Congress in Barcelona next month." i live in the uk and havent seen it on the shelves...
2Perfect @ Jan 22nd 2007 2:22PM
I don't see what's the point of going slimmer. I understand smaller, lighter, but slimmer? If the length and width is still the same, all you're doing is making an easily breakable piece of hard plastic - with some chips inside.
PS: When did iPhone's come in to this? =S
Vince D @ Jan 22nd 2007 3:46PM
Good point - make everything(display, keypad, case) flexible and super-tough, then we'll see the final form of the portable communications device! You could carry it in your hip pocket, add velcro to wrap it around an arm....
Carbonize @ Jan 22nd 2007 6:06PM
I'm personally fed up with all this thin phone malarky. The phones get wider as they get thinner. I find that neither the RAZR nor the D900 sit comfortably in my hand. Also how strong is this phone going to be? Could you carry it in your trouser pocket without it snapping when you sit down?
lettcco @ Jan 22nd 2007 3:50PM
no thanks. If it's anything like the previous samsung slider phone I had, the reception is horrible.
thegoodoldkicker @ Jan 22nd 2007 4:08PM
The iPhone sucks. For god sake it's on at G2 networks, most phone in South Korea are on G3 networks. A faster and superior networks for everything.
These phones and the new walkman phone from sony will kill the iPhone. Not to mention 3 times cheaper.
No Korean or Japanese would ever pay 600 for a phone that can't even pay the Bus fair. (LOL)
Ben @ Jan 23rd 2007 4:33AM
"The iPhone sucks. For god sake it's on at G2 networks, most phone in South Korea are on G3 networks. A faster and superior networks for everything."
In South Korea they have G3 everywhere. In the US, that's where it's selling btw, it isn't everywhere. Only in major cities, so they're going with the G2 until G3 becomes more prevelant and then they'll send out an upgrade to G3.
"No Korean or Japanese would ever pay 600 for a phone that can't even pay the Bus fair. (LOL)"
Well, considering NO phones in the U.S. pay a bus fare, I think the iPhone's doing pretty well.
chris @ Jan 22nd 2007 4:18PM
i think flaming ghost means he had the D900,
why does every phone that gets posted have to be compared with the Iphone?
>sigh
T-Will @ Jan 22nd 2007 4:31PM
I like the big screen...now if only it had a QWERTY keyboard hiding under there and ran Windows Mobile...I guess you can always dream. ;-)

NOOOOOOO
I bought a D900 FIVE DAYS AGO.
Whatever, I plan on looking at it this way:
1. I think the D900 looks better.
2. I bought the D900 for $300. It'll probably be nearly a year before this thing costs that price.
Oh well, this is just ironic, heh.
Michael Grant @ Jan 23rd 2007 10:55AM
I've got a choice.

andy @ Jan 22nd 2007 8:50PM
every phone is compared to the iphone, but its gunna suck for 3 reasons
1)it will be played out like the RAZR, no1 wants a phone that every1 has...
2)no 3g
3)s.ericson, nokia and samsung have been making way better phones for many more years now... iphone is guai lo
joe @ Jan 22nd 2007 10:54PM
this got to be the best looking phone since d900!
Ben @ Jan 23rd 2007 4:35AM
lol andy: "no1 wants a phone that every1 has"
Is that right?
Just wanted to point out the Yogi Berrism.
Nick @ Jan 23rd 2007 10:22AM
Samsung have not worked out how to ring and vibrate at the same time. DO NOT BUY THEIR PHONES. I just sent the E900 (Chocolate rip-off) back to Vodafone for that reason alone. Reception also sucks vs. my 4 year old Nokia.
notbsd @ Jan 23rd 2007 3:09PM
Kindof looks like Zoë's phone from Dreamfall. Looks really nice.
John @ Jan 26th 2007 5:20PM
Everyone keeps on saying why phones are compared to the iphone, no dip because it is the latest fad. just like the june was compared to the ipod. all in all the iphone is an overrated piece of crap that is basically flashing the whole fully functional touch screen. if you're some rich bastard that likes fun, its the phone for you. but for someone more in the real world, any slim phone works and looks just fine. as of people saying the slimmer the phone the easier it is to break, what are you completely moronic? i'm not even 15 yet and i know that samsung will first off, work on some hard protective shell for the slim phones it puts out on the line. and also, i believe samsung is making these slim phones for your front pockets not your back, because a medium to thick phone can fit in your back pocket fine. Idiots!
