Haier's speedy X6 UMPC touts 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo processor
Nah, Haier's X6 UMPC won't turn any heads in the design department, but we must say we're glad it gave a bit more attention to the internals and left the enclosure to the OEMs. Beneath the perfectly average exterior lies a full QWERTY keyboard, Intel's 945GU chipset (you know, from the Ultra Mobile Platform), a 6.5-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 30GB 5,400RPM hard drive, webcam, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, and a GPS receiver to top things off. The standout feature, however, is the choice of processors available on this rig, as power users should adore the 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo L2500 or 1.66GHz L2400. Notably, El Reg suggests that the 720-gram unit sports a battery that provides "four to five hours" of continuous juice, but we imagine taxing that speedy CPU could slice into those number fairly quickly. Still, the Vista-equipped machine packs quite a punch for being so nimble, and while a release date wasn't disclosed, it should start around £580 ($1,165) whenever it lands.

This little bit of kit sounds perfect for what I need on the road, and at the right price as well. I have had to lug around a full size notebook for a while now (other than the HTC Himalaya that hasn't got wifi :o( ) and swapping to a tablet or small full spec notebook would cost me more than this little beauty would. Most of the time I am simply checking emails which works out quite expensive using the Himalaya & GPRS, & walking around the cities with a notebook open isn't the best idea in the world (especially with the low battery life of them).

thats the same as the medion/gigabyte u6o , only with a different keyboard and an intel chip. medion are taking pre-orders at £800 which is way over priced, but £580 is getting closer to where these things will really sell, sub £400 and these things will start popping up everywhere.

It is the same as the medion MD RIM 1000/Gigabyte U60/Arima/Tango Wings but they've replaced the split keyboard and moved the wifi radio and other function buttons to the left side.

I wonder which is faster, this or the Sony UMPC. I'd guess the Sony because you can get solid state memory, which is really the bottleneck in systems like this.

I'm sorry, but this would SMOKE the sony UMPC. It has a faster hdd (and benchmarks prove that 5400 vs 4200 makes a bigger difference than 5400 vs 7200), a gig of ram, and a c2d vs the core solo. Unfortunately this also means bad things for battery life. It is my dream come true for mobile computing, IF they actually release it at said price point instead of doubling the price and cutting the expected battery life in half.

No, you don't understand. I'm not talking about the Sony with the hard drive. You can also purchase the same exact model with only solid state memory, and NO hard drive. This speeds things up, improves battery life, and startup times. Any hard drive takes time to find data on the platter, while solid state is nearly instantaneous.

sony umpc got 1024x600 resolution VS this competitor at 800x480!

I’m interested in the Haier X6 UMPC. Can you purchase one in the U.S. If so where and how much.
