Looks like
HP's HDX has finally poked its
pivoting, angling neck out to say hello. We welcome the mammoth, overzealous "entertainment series" laptop, in all its specced out glory. Marvel at its:
- Centrino (Core 2) Duo T7700 2.4GHz CPU
- 20.1-inch 1680 x 1050 "Ultra Brightview" display
- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB graphics (DirectX 10)
- 4GB RAM
- Dual 200GB SATA drives, eSATA port
- Integrated ATSC / NTSC tuner with IR blaster
- 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth
- HD DVD (read-only), dual layer DVD±RW drive
- ExpressCard slot, HDMI out
Did we mention it's 15.5 pounds, 2.3-inches thick, and will bankrupt your family? Seriously, consider this one long and hard. Your kids' college education is more important than a laptop.

For the sake of my future children, I dont want this anywhere near my lap.
But seriously, this counts more as a Mobile Desktop, than a laptop.
Zeus the God @ May 8th 2007 10:27PM
If I had the money, I would definitely buy this. Well, maybe not, but I'm glad to see the first laptop to have the new ATI GPUs installed are hitting the market.
Joe Smith @ May 8th 2007 10:28PM
2.3 INCHES??? that's thicker than the length of my... uh... pinky!
Zeus the God @ May 8th 2007 10:31PM
I'm really diggin' that clamshell design... 2.3 inches? Eh, could be worse.
yenraf @ May 8th 2007 11:13PM
I'm not sure I know anybody who has a legitimate reason for something this ridiculous...
Nor come to think of it can i even think of a legitimate reason... other than the fact that if you had a crap ton of money to throw away it would be sweet just to say you had something like that...
xchekox @ May 8th 2007 10:41PM
just 1680 x 1050 ??? Dell's XPS m1710 has 1900X1200?? and it's a 17 inch lap...
Well the m2010 has the same resolution...
I know it must be no less than $5000... so I agrre with the kids' education comment lol...
Andrew Miguelez @ May 20th 2007 2:55AM
Yeah, I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 from two years ago. It has a 17" screen and 1920x1200 native resolution. I hate how mostly all larger screen flat panels, laptops, HDTV's, and now this, have a lower res screen than mine. I want to get a bigger screen but I don't want to sacrifice my resolution. What gives? How come it seems that you can't find such a high res these days without paying way too much or sacrificing contrast and/or response? Anyone know? Can't wait until this changes.
kuzu-b @ May 8th 2007 10:51PM
As a proud owner of a 17 inch HP dv8000 I have ti say I really want this laptop. Except the whole point in me buying a second laptop is to buy a smaller one, not a larger one. Still, this might replace my larger one, which I might sell to justify getting this.
Naveed @ May 8th 2007 10:52PM
esata port great, HDMI out really great, 1050x1680 bad. my 3 year old HP 17" has 1680x1050. sweet computer though. Definately a mobile desktop not a laptop
Neil @ May 8th 2007 10:53PM
The screen res is way too low for such a HD-DVD equipped machine, it really should have been 1920x1200 so as to fully support 1080p. I also don't really like the screen hinge, but I guess the screen is a bit heavy and needed all the support it could get. Overall I like the looks of this notebook a lot, but I think I'll stay with my 17" Dell XPS M1710, I mean once u go over the 17" mark you might as well just get a desktop.
CajunLuke @ May 8th 2007 11:01PM
For those people who are wondering who would buy such a thing, I know many college students who never move their laptops (even the 12" kind) from their desks. This would be great for them with the desktop that they would really use, but not something you have to disassemble every year to move in/out.
Andy @ May 8th 2007 11:10PM
Disassemble? I can have my normal size desktop and CRT monitor packed and ready to go to a lanparty in 5 minutes flat.
Homeboy @ May 8th 2007 11:30PM
I have a soft spot for large screens and own a Pavilion DV9074 17 incher and love the glorious screen. This new HDX can sit on my lap anytime baby, as long as it doesn't burn my scrotum. Gotta love the specs though.
pupkick @ May 8th 2007 11:35PM
1680x1050?? On a 20"??? What a bunch of crap.
Ende @ May 8th 2007 11:53PM
When there'll be 19" laptops [read: sub 10lbs] with better screen resolution and similar specs, I'm sold
Dan @ May 9th 2007 12:21AM
GET A DESKTOP. It's by no means "portable". The screen res is horrible for such a high-end expensive computer.
For goodness sakes I could duct-tape a 17" MacBook Pro and a 20" Cinema Display together and it'd be thinner than this thing. (Anyone getting fired up that I mentioned Apple can just cool their jets. It's only because they have thin laptops and displays)
Dan @ May 9th 2007 12:23AM
...also, don't ask me why I put portable in quotes. Maybe I was originally going to say something about them calling it a laptop. I don't know.
enlai_prod @ May 9th 2007 12:31AM
For all the users saying that its ridiculous that this monstrosity would have a 1680x1050 display, you're right. And believe me, HP probably knows it too. I'm willing to stake my life on the fact that 1680 is either 1. Merely the base configuration or 2. This information is simply inaccurate.
In a rig named the "HDX," using a video card branded "HD," with a HD-DVD drive and a HDMI port, it is HIGHLY unlikely that they would make such a system incapable of broadcasting in 1080p.
This reminds me of previous articles on engadget claiming that new top end 17" gaming laptops with nonexistent 8800 geforce gos will have a 1280x1020 resolution. That's utter nonsense, the information is simply inaccurate.
The only legitimate reason why anyone would suspect this screen to ACTUALLY be 1680x1050, is the fact that 20 inch laptop systems today all seem to use the same panel using that resolution. However, most of those systems are targeted primarily at hardcore gamers, while this appears to simply be capitalizing on the new "HD" craze. Not to mention it doesn't seem to be a "gaming" computer anyway, considering that the videocard appears to be considerably weaker than the older 7950 gtx.
Conrell @ May 9th 2007 10:19AM
^^^^^^ WEaker card?!?!?!? You fool, this card is direct 10x who cares if it is 256 and not 512. It is still more ready for the future than the 7950. You lost all respect from the whole post!!!
enlai_prod @ May 9th 2007 11:58PM
Oh god, not another "LOL DX10>DX9 MORON" post. Guess what idiot, the effects that are made possible by DX10 and SM 4.0 are irrelevant if the graphics card has terrible specs. Guess what genius, the integrated graphics on new motherboards are DX10, do you think that makes them better than previous gen cards?
I wasn't referring to the 256 megabytes moron, although anyone who actually knows anything about computers would know that. The ATI HD x2600 is likely to be on par with the Geforce go 8600, and the stream processors, clock speed, etc. all indicate that the Go 8600 will be on par with the 7900 GS. The 7900 GTX beats the GS by a significant margin. Not to mention the fact that its only 256 megabytes WILL be a factor if you attempt to play games on a higher resolution.
In other words, the 7950 GTX as a DX9 card will probably offer better graphics than the x2600 on the majority of games, especially if the pixel/vertex shader usage is ideal.
Looks like you just lost respect because apparently you don't know a damn thing about videocards.
Darnell @ May 9th 2007 12:53AM
I too have to believe the screen resolution to be better than reported, and that the 1680 x 1050 is just one of the resolution options--just like any other laptop with varying pixel dimensions. It's a monster and I know that this is aimed at a small niche of consumers but I know commercial photographers would love to use this in the field (given that it does carry a higher resolution screen). The chip puts it on par with the Mac book Pro and bigger screens are always welcome. I'd like to think that you could fit more ram in there than your average high end 17'' latop as well.
How much is it again?
Darnell @ May 9th 2007 12:55AM
I really like this thing and that's coming from a Mac person.
M @ May 9th 2007 3:47PM
Perfect! I have bad eyes so the resolution is awesome!
I only have an issue with the letters "HP", but I will get one!
M
o_O @ May 9th 2007 1:01AM
What do you expect from a mid range X2600?
Dan @ May 9th 2007 2:24AM
To all who say "this is hardly portable" and "it takes me five minutes to pack up my desktop.
Well... it would take you 10 seconds to pack this up. If you can lift 15lb, this is portable.
...I want it.
Dan
Iamsars @ May 9th 2007 2:28AM
How can this laptop not be portable??
HP=Highly portable of course ;)
Jason Brown @ May 9th 2007 2:31AM
every other site has no mention of resolution and every other site says it will be a nvidia 8800 card.
nikster @ May 9th 2007 2:48AM
I am guessing that 1680x is a pretty standard resolution for desktop 20" LCDs? It's the only reason I could imagine having such a low rez on this - seeing as it is that the keyboard is attached to the screen, this is either for people with bad eyesight or for people who love to be able to see each individual pixel.
I have 1680x on my 15.4" screen and it's just about perfect. Not that I would buy this anyway, I carry this thing on me just about 24/7 so this would be way too heavy.
mike @ May 9th 2007 3:09AM
(Anyone getting fired up that I mentioned Apple can just cool their jets. It's only because they have thin laptops and displays)
...
That and.. this is a black iMac
Rynth @ May 9th 2007 4:28AM
Sorry kids.. but well.. its o-so shiny!!
What a desk-lap combo.. I'd love that as a portable, sorry, nearly portable gaming machine type thing....
Muu @ May 9th 2007 9:04AM
Normally I'd say 1920x1200 is overkill for a LAPTOP, but since the clamshell would allow for closer positioning to the viewer they could have gotten away with it w/o alienating all but the under-21 crowd. That said, there are a million things that are more important in a LCD screen, so anyone bitching about resolution alone should consider that as well. Here I'm talking about light leakage, sparkle effects, color correctness, black levels, etc... I'll take a 1280x800 20inch screen with perfect colors, no leakage and no sparkles any day over a 1920x1200 that's leaking light from the bottom and sparkling so much it makes your eyes hurt w/in 10 minutes of using it.
nate @ May 9th 2007 11:22AM
Anyone else concerned about the heat this "Dragon" might produce? I bet without proper considerations, this will be blowing fire out the ass if it just sat on a desk or lap for an extended period of time.
Deezee @ May 9th 2007 3:03PM
Anybody know how much it will cost???? It looks freggin great. I want one so bad.
hackaroxp @ May 9th 2007 3:07PM
Did you just call that "laptop"? xD
Deezee @ May 9th 2007 3:16PM
Nevermind. The one I want is about $5000. Damn it. Why is everything I want more than $5000? Bah.
erzimag @ May 9th 2007 6:26PM
The starting price for this thing is $ 2,999 and will be supposedly avaiable for summer.
Flalex @ May 9th 2007 7:39PM
The DV9000 has all that except the screen and a smaller remote, in a smaller, lighter, cheaper form.
Z @ May 11th 2007 8:00PM
This is a beast of a machine, but did all the W-UXGA screens disappear? Why are retailers only maxing out at SXGA+ in their laptops??? They cram a HUGE 20" screen in there, and the best they can do is SXGA+? That is just IDIOTIC. Being unfamiliar with that video card, I wonder what its performance would be. They should have SLI in that thing.
Hey, for that kind of money, size, and weight, I have a right to be picky.
Z @ May 11th 2007 8:09PM
After reading what Laptop Mag had to say, it seems HP is going to slap in a W-UXGA screen after all. PERFECT!!! So after that, and all the specs, along with the adjustable webcam and fingerprint reader, this beast really DOES have it all!
Z @ May 11th 2007 8:14PM
Well, I'm still questioning the video card, but that would be its only weak link if it proves to be so, which would be a major weak link, and a shame. Hopefully, it'll perform up to par.
Snake @ May 27th 2007 8:50AM
I think it is a very good idea from HP, i mean for me is excellent,
Because Im a student and i travel alot and, of course i also love gaming =P
I have a very small laptop, fujitsu very handy but not powerful enough to play modern games.
I think for people like me, it will be great to be able to get a laptop like this one but i have to say is quite heavy and the price... Man if i was a rich person I would definitely buy it. Im only a average student, who can't afford such power, but hopefuolly it will come down soon and i can get it! Or maybe some one rich, whos would like to offer this for my birthday 25 May,=P lol
KMan @ Aug 5th 2007 8:29AM
For anyone wondering what "legitimate" use there might be for such a monster, it would be ideal for automated displays at conventions. Way easier to transport and setup than a comparable desktop.
Of course, if I have the cash and I just want it because I think it's cool, then it's "legitimate" for me. What arrogance some people have -- trying to decide what's "legitimate" for everyone else.
