HP gets official with new laptop lineup

There's not a lot of surprises given all the leaks we've seen, but HP has now officially taken the wraps of its expansive new lineup of laptops, all of which are based on Intel's new Santa Rosa platform. On the consumer front, the company's introducing a slew of new Pavilion laptops, including the dv2000 series, dv6000 series, dv9000 series, and the previously-announced beast that is the Pavilion HDX. Of the less gargantuan laptops, three new models pack 14.1-inch, 15.4-inch, and 17-inch widescreen displays, respectively, and each come loaded with a variety of Core 2 Duo processors, Nvidia GeForce 8400M graphics, built-in webcams (optional in some models), and integrated WiFi (including 802.11n in some models). Look for these to boast starting prices of $999, $949, and $1,199. For the more business minded, HP's also busted out a number of new laptops in its Compaq Presario line, including the 14.1-inch V3000 series, 15.4-inch V6000 series, the 17-inch 8710 and 8510 series, the 2710p convertible tablet, the 2510p ultralight and, last but not least, the 6910p, 6710, and 6510b "Balanced Mobility" models, which boast 14.1-inch and 15.4-inch displays. On the low-end, you'll be able to get a V6000 laptop starting at just $899, with starting prices going all the way up to $2,199 for the top-end 8510w model. As for availability, you can look for all the Pavilion laptops and the Compaq Presario 6910p, 6710, and 6510b to start rolling out immediately, with some more Presarios following in mid-July and the rest trickling out over the course of the summer.

Apparently, many of HP's new line of laptops also have "Illumi-Lite" displays, which I hope is their marketing term for LED backlights. It's about time they started showing up in real (affordable) products.

Where are you guys seeing Nvidia GeForce 8400M graphics because all I am seeing is Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 ?

Dude, seriously! HP needs to pull themselves together and start shipping the new NVIDIA GPU with their 14.1" notebooks. Also, what the hell is with the new laptops running with an 800MHz FSB with PC2-5300 RAM? Hello, where is DDR3, or at least PC2-6400 for notebooks. Dual channel mode of PC2-6400 would run at 12.8GB/s, whereas the current PC2-5300 runs only at 10.6GB/s in dual channel. Geeze!!! Lastly, HP seriously, where the hell is the option for 100GB 7200RPM HD's? At least give us that, since it's been on the market for more than 1.5 years!!!

The press kit also said the dv6000 series would have a HD DVD-ROM option, but I don't see that one either...

What's with the lack of ExpressCard in most of HP's business laptops? I'd love to buy one otherwise, especially in that one can buy them sans Windows. They're nice machines, but they need to get with the times in regard to ExpressCard.

I dont see the Nvidia GeForce 8400M either....only Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. I wanted to order one today, but seeing the X3100 as the only option I decided not to.

HP has confirmed to me that they do not have Pavilion notebooks in stock with the Nvidia GeForce 8400M graphics option. Many of the new Pavilion notebooks are also supposed to be able to be configured with a HD DVD-ROM drive, but that is not available either. They could not tell me when to expect these options to be available or confirm that they would be available in the near future.

I was waiting for this because I was going to buy a dv9000t with all the trimmings before and so I waited for this update but it seems like the dv9500 is actually worse. You can't get a graphics card other than the integrated intel one, you cant get a 7200 rpm hard drive, and there's no hd-dvd option.
I'm pretty annoyed now. Maybe they're not finished updating the website or something? (I hope)

I agree, I hope that they do it soon as well. I got really excited when I read what engadget posted and when I went to their website I was thoroughly dismayed.

any reason most laptop manufacturers don't offer a 7200/160GB HD? it's either 160GB @ 5400 or 100GB @ 7200. after market it's no problem to get a 160GB/7200 disk.
A 160GB disk could be expected to have over 50% more sustained transfer rate than 100GB at the same rotational speed. Going from 160GB/5400 to 100GB/7200 has almost no speed advantage - better seek times, but same or worse transfer rate depending on how much data is on the drive.
I am just gnashing my teeth because HD speed is really the only issue with my middle-aged Centrino Duo 2GHz. I never wait for anything except the HD. I need a much much faster HD in my laptop.

for those complaining about the drive, i usually get the cheapest drive and upgrade later via newegg, sometimes cheaper that way plus you get an extra drive

BTW, the Santa Rosa platform does not currently provide support for DDR3 =/, so that's probably why we aren't seeing it. I am still buying the premium FZ model from Sony when it goes on sell in a week or two (Blu-ray burner built it baby, w00t).

Very lame! I would still go with the dv9000t due to the graphics and Hd issues.
