Well the rumors have been floating around for a few days, and now we've gotten official word -- in the form of the invite you see above -- that Apple will be holding a "special event" on September 5th. Let the speculationbegin!
If that's the official invite? No doubt! That's what coverflow on my iPhone looks like, and I'll bet that's what coverflow will look like on whatever iPod they debut on the 5th. I don't think the 5th gen iPod has the horsepower to do coverflow, and it would be so small on that screen, there has to be something new to handle it.
Still, I'm keeping my 60GB 5th gen, because I don't need the new hotness...I hope! I don't use the coverflow portion on my iPhone at all because there's actually very little control of the song you're currently listening to out of the coverflow interface, but that's my experience with it. It still looks cool when you have enough cover albums to skim through them...
Why would the iPod need a built in speaker? The only reason the iPhone has one is because of speakerphone and the fact that it needs to ring. I don't think they'd put a speaker on an iPod just because the iPhone has one.
I also don't see how they could possibly have a touchscreen on a 30 GB iPod and keep it at $250, personally. Either there will be a price hike (unlikely) or we're going to get "mechanical" click wheels (same as previous gen), perhaps with added functionality.
As i have been saying for over a week now this will be the new touch screen ipod it will look similar to the iphone. my origional date was the 4th but apple went wiht the 5th becasue of the holiday.
Yeah, not Beatles album covers, but when you look at the album covers they picked for this the do look suggestively "Beatles like". When I saw it that was the 1st thing I thought of.
Yeah it may not be Beatles albums, but isn't "The BEAT goes on" some kind of hint?
The nano flower is a fake... Not only does it look too clumsy for an Apple design, but am I the only one who notices that the graphic is the same as the iLife and iWork boxes? Pretty convenient to organize "new" square nanos in the same way that are on the covers of products Apple just released...
I would guess they were prototypes at one point... and as for Sept 5th? iPhone-like iPod line up with flash memory (maybe wifi for ITMS downloads?), Beatles on iTunes, maybe a software update for iPhone, and an update on when to officially expect Leopard.
I definitely think new ipods I work at best buy and and most of our stores have been out of all ipods for about a week and a half now and we havent gotten any or show that we are getting any and the last time this happened the new ipods were released.
i know...none of the 8 best buys within 100 miles of me have had any nano's, except the hot pink, for the last 2 weeks. i've been waiting for the 8gb nano, now i will wait another week to check this out.
I work at Officeworks in Australia, and we sell iPods too. SAP is showing all our iPod lines as S which means Sell-Through, which means the manufacture won't provide us any more
I work at Bing Lee in Australia (yay, .au) and we're out of iPod's too. If I told you the price of what accessories have been marked down to you might faint..
The new iPod is definitely coming out. I just hope it's not really that ugly and fat iPod that'll replace the nano that was shown a few days ago by Engadget. The last time I saw it, I washed my eyes out with soap and cried myself to sleep.

Apparently is the official invite.
My predictions a.k.a. wish list:
- no more iPod Nano
- price drop for iPod Shuffle ($59)
- iPod (with Touch)
-- 4GB, 8GB, 30GB, 80GB
-- same price points
-- Cover Flow
-- speaker built-in
-- iPhone design, but slimmer (esp. flash models)
- custom ringtone service for iPhone

Hang on. You want no more Nano, but want a 4gb/8gb flash-based iPod?
Am I the only one this confuses?
perfectionist @ Aug 29th 2007 12:45AM
Speaker would be handy to share music quickly, but it wouldn't help profit...
One unified screened iPod line with flash & HDD models. Same design, diff. storage capacity.

I love it when seriousness is taken as sarcasm on the internet... it's so hard to differentiate. Remember kids, always use your sarcasm tags!
Matt @ Aug 28th 2007 6:57PM
Touch Screen Ipod with flash memory?
Kurt @ Aug 28th 2007 6:57PM
Did anyone else realize they have a Beatles album in there... Maybe they'll finally add all the Beatles albums to iTunes...
Ben Belden @ Aug 28th 2007 7:03PM
Look a little closer. That's a BEAstie Boys album, not The Beatles.
Ryan Cain @ Aug 28th 2007 7:48PM
It is not a Beatles album cover. It is the album cover for the latest Beastie Boys album titled "The Mix Up."
cello @ Aug 28th 2007 8:27PM
did you also notice that the albums are NOT in alphabetical order? keane, flaming lips, beastie boys, jack johnson

@Mike RSS automatically inserts a out-date a year after it comes in. We got the 5.5G on 9/15/06. RSS has said that out-date since then.
