It's on: Apple event slated for September 5th

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Is anyone else think iPhone ver. 2? C'mon, they have been out for two months now. If they don't announce an update soon I may have to go for a Zune phone.
Apple better have the new 6th generation iPods. If they do unveil them why didn't they do this at the last event when they showed the new iMacs. They probably didn't unveil it them because of filing for patents or fixing errors. Either way I hope I see the new iPod, praying for the Mac OS build installed, and ofcourse touch capabilities.
/me crosses fingers for triple digit gb ipod
he, iPods
looks like i will be buying a 6th gen iPod next Wednesday.
i bet they will never make a widescreen ipod with a HDD
I just bought an overpriced (because I live outside of the US) 2 GB iPod nano, and now this... I remember, same thing happened with iPod mini two years ago. Sigh... It's technology setting its pace... =D
Well, whoop-dee-doo! I'll have to reset the calendar for the new millennium. A whole slew of 6G iPods and Leopard, too. I'll take one of each. Let the buzz and hype begin. I think the song "Happy Days are Here Again" was written precisely for an Apple event like this. This event is like Viagra for Apple lovers everywhere. The PMP bar will be set so high that the other manufacturers will have to climb the Petronas Towers just to see it. At least one million iPods a month, no make that two million a month will be sold. All sold out before Christmas and martial law will be declared. $Ka-chiiing. Mo money, mo money. ;)
For those who don't quite recognize obvious sarcasm, please don't get your dirty knickers in a twist over the above statements.
So, an iPod with a large touchscreen and stylus, handwriting recognition, and the ability to download and run programs.
You dumb idoits.... what makes you guys go off for those dumb ipods? Nokia is releasing far better phones tomorrow and still there are about 5 replies for that thread but for apple 150 replies??
No wonder america is still worse than 3rd world countries in mobile technology.
Grow up
My 20gb 2nd gen ipod is getting a little outdated, its time for an upgrade :)
Well people, the new ipod "touch" will be the iphone minus the phone, the rim will be black instead of silver, and i wouldn't expect anything less than 120 GB hard drive (yes HD not flash!) there will be no speaker or click wheel on the ipod....Well, there will be a click wheel of sorts, there will be a proximitor in the ipod that detects when a finger is about 1 cm away and the click wheel is displayed on screen.
I'd expect some beatles announcement.
On a separate note i hope the pictures of the nano's aren't real as they are ugly as hell, touch is the way forward.
Every Store in My company has been told to send all ipod nano's back to the warehouse by Next wedensday.
wouldn't the ipod on the cover flow image have a larger screen if they're releasing an ipod touch with a full screen? the ipod on the cover flow has the same screen size as g5.
will the new ipod on the market on next wednesday, or just post the news to worldwide?
cannot wait to buy the new ipod.
The world does not revolve around Apple!
Hmmm. Hi everyone, blah blah, exciting year, blah blah, iPhones sold well, blah blah, some minor iPhone announcement, Leopard release date will be October 23rd... we have some new stuff [perk up]... iPods, blah blah, new iPods, have the scroll wheel interface on the screen like those old patent drawings, cover flow, new capacities, new iTunes movie options... Nanos, new capacities, new form factor w/widescreen, not as ugly as those 'leaked' shots... both use bluetooth to integrate with new AppleTV... new AppleTV, blah de blah, does cool stuff w/iPods and iPhones and so on... one more thing... -????- There's my predictions in a nutshell :)
September 5th is my birthday :D
I think we really will see some Beatles action on Wednesday. I think the graphic is a tease for that very thing (yes, I know that's a Beastie Boys album, but still...) The color scheme in the middle is almost exactly like the Beatles' recent "Love" CD.
That's exactly what I said yesterday.
I don't get the hype of having Beatles albums on the iTMS. It's not like they're hard to come by or anything. Most people who like the Beatles already have them...
Battery replacement possibilities...
lets hope so. Apple needs to get on this bandwagon. It's sucha pain not to have a replacable battery.
My expectations are more aluminum products (Ipods) with more unnecessary features & Video nano thats why it will become fatter.
It's going to be the iPod based on the iPhone, and they are going to announce the new iTunes that give you the ability to download songs to your iPhone/iPod over wifi. More movie studios added to the iTunes store and dates for the ultraportable Macbook Pro and OSX.
Is it wrong of me to pray for a flash-based, WiFi and Bluetooth enabled touch screen iPod? I.E. an iPhone sans phone? ...I suppose that would be an iPDA. Heh.
I sincerely do hope that they keep the click-wheel, or some sort of mechanical input (even just buttons) instead of going all touchscreen.
Why? Because it would suck to have to light up my iPod and look at it when I'm listening to music in bed, just to skip to the next track. Or to adjust the volume.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I still think that my 4G 20Gb iPod is still the best form-factor/drive capacity combo there is. Small enough to not be bulky, and with enough capacity to fit my music library (at least the bits that matter).
Does anybody feel the same?
Its probably just me hallucinating, but does anyone think that the various things in this invite as being clues.
Like the person holding the ipod and the words "the beat goes on" (maybe clues that the next gen ipod will be released), the coverflow format of the invite (maybe in the ipod or a sign of the release of the mac os x leopard), the cd covers (maybe a sign of an update to the itunes store).
I really don't know what to expect as far as new iPods go, but if I were Steve Jobs, Phil Schiller and Jonathan Ives all in one I would probably do this:
1. Update the shuffle with storage bumps (maybe 2GB) and the rumored (RED) with the same price point
2. Update the nano with storage bumps of 8 and 16GB at the same price points
3. Update the current 5.5G iPod video with 32GB flash and an anodized aluminum case, giving it just as big of a footprint as the 5.5G but just as thick as the nano (a little thicker for a better battery) at the same $249 price point. I'm wondering if that's what the "iPod Phatty" is. I know some people are suggesting that on various sites.
4. Add a full-screen multi touch iPod running OS X using the series of Apple's patented gestures to play, pause and skip tracks so that it would be just as simple (maybe even simpler) to use as the current click-wheel input. That way we would not have to be looking at our iPod to do basic tasks, and we wouldn't even have to fumble around to find the click wheel (not that it's that hard). If it doesn't have wifi (which I'd think would be the case, unfortunately for those of us who will buy one), it would have notes, calendar, and contacts widgets with the same interface as the iPhone for editing entries (and even meta data for media files) on the fly. It would have 80GB and 120GB (or more) options. It would keep the mini jack for the standard iPod headphones and the dock connector on the bottom, to retain compatibility with all 5G and earlier dock connector accessories. I would also definitely keep white as an option... it's iconic... it's definitely the one I would buy.
5. A possible update to the current iPhone configurations... although it's probably too early in the product life-cycle to see any spec boosts, but we might see some extra widget (maybe iChat?) or a significant software update (copy/paste functionality and the ability to send iCal events over Mail?).
By doing this, it would bridge the gap between the iPod and iPhone without "cannibalizing" iPhone sales whatsoever. And even if it did a little it would not be detrimental to the iPhone, because it would still make sense to have a high end iPod and an iPhone. The only way that Apple won't add a gap in their product line is to keep an iPod at the $250-300 price point. A good upgrade would be an aluminum nano-ized form factor with a flash drive instead of the current HDD.
But we'll have to see on Wednesday morning.
my guess is tht there will be 2 configurations for the new ipod which will all have touchscreen
- 32GB flash based, as thin as the current nano
- 80GB hdd based
- 120GB hdd based
just my opinion.
typo sorry, i meant 3!
Nope. I don't think anyone on here is right. New iPods? Com'on. iPhone updates? Please! I think they're bringing back the iPod mini. Those things are freaking AWESOME.
Okay, enough of me being a jerk. I'm expecting (as everyone else in the known universe) new iPods, more than likely touch-screen (what a shocker!), but I'm not sure if I (personally) like the idea of a full touch-screen iPod. The click-wheel has been around for 7 years. It's my opinion that people (whom are familiar with the iPod) are used to being able to scroll around the interface with the iPod in one hand while doing another task (like sitting at a red-light, or stuck in traffic) that requires more or a greater demand of a users' attention span. This is one of my complaints about the iPhone, although I will admit the iPhones are freaking sweet and I'm going to buy one either in December or February.
My ideal/personal opinion for the 6th Gen iPod? 3.5-inch widescreen iPod, 60GB/80GB/100GB models. But instead of the Full-iPod (current 4-5.5G) Click-Wheel, the use of the smaller, iPod Nano Click-Wheel. Basically, a reduced Click-Wheel. This would also reduce manufacturing costs. Currently, Apple has to order two differently sized Click-Wheels for the iPods and iPod Nanos, cut the larger size, reduce 'custom' manufacturing the two sizes.
That's just my speculation/personal opinion. And yes, I currently own a MacBook and an iPod Mini. I'm looking forward to seeing what Apple is going to do, but I'm not crazed about the current speculations/rumors of that I've been reading.
I am expecting an update on Leopard, maybe a rumor confirmation of an iPhone update; although, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't any mention of either product at the time of the announcement.
iPODS!!!! WITH A TOUCH SCREEN!!!!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
Does anyone knows the hour ou the event?
It's official, I've had my premonition dream like I do with new tek releases, it’s a new iPod on Wednesday I think. I always do the dream thing about 4 days before some new gadget hits the market, like I did with the 5Gen iPod and back in the day, the Psion Series 5. My dreams are usually pretty close to what we get. I don’t believe in this stuff either but what can I say, I have them and they always seem close.
In the dream the device had a very small round wheel centre bottom, I remember a small blue light somewhere near the wheel area, it could have been light reflecting off the case. There was something about the wheel that was different (not just it’s size) couldn’t see it clearly. Big screen, almost borderless. Device about the same overall size as the 5Gen. I remember some kind of blue tad with an orange icon thing at the top left of the screen, I remember thinking I was a bit disappointed with this, not sure what it was. Device was very thin. Didn’t see the back of the device. I remember a demo using the wheel and then, changing to a touch screen demo with the introduction of cover-flow, which was horizontal. That’s about all I had time for. I found something disappointing at the start of the dream not sure what that was. It might have been I thought it wasn’t touch screen, who, knows.
New iPod, Leopard release date, price drops for everything.
Where is that image from??? I looked on iTunes store homepage, www.apple.com american store, all over and I can't find it anywhere!
For what it's worth, I'd love an official release date for Leopard (how could they keep us waiting like this!) or else a release date for the iPhone for us chumps in Europe. If it's anything iPod it'll be exciting for anyone who digs Apple.
Maybe they also wish to give us a solid date to which we can expect OS X Leopard to be released?
What time does the event start.
wow
Well, I hope it is new ipods. My 5th Generation ipod broke weeks ago and the Mac Store told me they would call as soon as my replacement was available. Of course after hearing all the rumors, I was hoping that there were no more 5th generations and I would get a 6th. Well, I was pretty bummed when I got a voice mail last week stating that my ipod was in. On an upbeat, they said I needed to schedule an appointment to pick it up. Why would I need to schedule an appointment? Just in case, I went online and scheduled my appointment for after the 5th. Here's hoping.
Peace,
I think that it is a good bet on the appearance of a new IPOD. I am not sure I agree with the images of "it" that have been floating around. September is also a key month for retailers. It makes sense from a business point of view that they would choose this time to start to release new hardware. As a stock holder, I would also like to see a "nano" like version of the Iphone. A lower price point for a model of that nature makes sense for this time of year as well.
