Portable NES mod integrates entire controller
We've seen a lot of portable NES mods come and go -- we're on pretty friendly terms with Ben Heck, after all -- but this is the first portable NES we've seen that integrates an actual NES controller. Of course, that makes the whole package pretty damn chubby, but hey, now you'll be working out those biceps in addition to improving your eye-hand coordination. We don't have a lot of info apart from this picture -- anyone know where this thing came from? Let us know in comments!

I, for one, welcome our new NES-modifying overlords.

KKop @ Sep 6th 2007 3:23AM
Wow, the other guy is wearing a MSX T-shirt. Talk about obscure...
Pixolut @ Sep 6th 2007 3:42AM
Where did he hide the car battery?
eTAN @ Sep 6th 2007 3:55AM
i hope the engadget moderators read this comment...this isn't exactly the first portable nes mod with a controller built into it...here's one from 2005...as you can see, the actual controller is not only integrated, but actually molded into the casing...i feel that he deserves some credit...maybe even a spot on the blog?

Or you could use a NES Emulator on a PSP....
Edward Hyena @ Sep 6th 2007 6:08AM
The PSP is bigger and using it for NES games makes Sony execs cry.
L. Cyphre @ Sep 6th 2007 6:10AM
'Portable', my ass.
strider_mt2k @ Sep 6th 2007 9:09AM
The hand truck is probably just out of camera range.
That thing is BIG.
Nick @ Sep 6th 2007 8:02AM
Hey, that's Megaman 2 :)
God bless the classics.
Atanas Boev @ Sep 6th 2007 8:08AM
Looks like Adventure Island I, or maybe, II :)
StrangeBum @ Sep 6th 2007 9:24AM
Damn..this reminds me of my old gray brick called the Gameboy. The casing and having just a standard NES controller on there. The resemblance is uncanny.
I wish I was able to do this sort of stuff; however, not too good with the soldering iron.
Will B @ Sep 6th 2007 9:31AM
HEY! I made one of these many years ago :(
I sawed the controller in half and put the buttons on either side of the screen. Check it out at my hella-old website!

That's it, shove an NES into a DVD-ROM housing! Nice and ergonomic...
Jeff @ Sep 6th 2007 9:54AM
Wow. It's so big and ugly. I can't wait to complain about it... just as soon as I finish building my own.
The rest of you, I can only assume, have finished yours? Right?
Play_it_Leo @ Sep 6th 2007 11:37AM
That is awesome.

This photo was taken on 2005(6?) Canal3's meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This one was made by Saulo San, who lives in Rio de Janeiro. This was made with a CD drive case (!), a foston LCD TV, a one-chip NES and a controller. Maybe I have more photos, I'm going to MSXRIO (a meeting of MSX users in Rio de Janeiro) and I can post more photos on my site as soon as I'm back. If engadget allows, the link is http://www.tabajara-labs.com.br

Wow!! My "portable" NES gone famous worldwide!! I´ll try to post more photos soon...
This small and cute NES was made by me and my "eletronic wizard" friend V4ndre and presented in the Canal3 meeting with few bugs. Some of them resolved and other pending until this date, and maybe forever... :-P
About the game played in the picture: This is Adventure Island 1, one of my personal top 10 for the NES...
