Intel looks to be keeping all of its bases covered at its Developer Forum in San Francisco this week, with the company announcing a slew of future plans for
desktops,
handhelds and, now, laptops. The biggest news on that front is Intel's announcement of its forthcoming "
Santa Rosa Refresh," which will be based on the company's upcoming
45nm Penryn mobile processor and is set to hit in January of next year. As with current Santa Rosa laptops, the updated platform will be based on Intel's 965 Express chipset, and will include all the usual networking and other options associated with it. Further on down the road, Intel is touting its Montevina platform, which will also be based on the 45nm Penryn processor, with added support for DDR3 memory, integrated HD-DVD/Blu-ray support, and integrated WiMAX in addition to the standard WiFi. What's more, Intel says the Montevina components will be about 40% smaller, opening up the possibility for a range of different laptop form factors. According to Intel, a number of companies including Acer, Asus, Lenovo, Panasonic and Toshiba have already "expressed intent" to embed WiMAX in future laptops of theirs, which could become a reality sometime in 2008, although it doesn't look like there's any firm word on that front just yet.
Wow. Second day in a row there is a time where there are no iWhatever stories on the front page...
Stop crying, ya little bitch.
Bring on the wimax! I'm holding out for a blu-ray/wimax laptop. Sometime in 2008 would be nice.
I welcome our new WiMAX overlords.
DAMN IT!!....I was waiting for a sweet mac laptop for over a year now...and now i just have to wait longer!!
Welcome to technology. I suppose all that's changed is now Apple will be rolling out new units in the same cycle as the PC boys.
buy it now, and sell it for half the price on fleabay when the new stuff comes out.
@Muu
More like 75-80% the price, I could sell my first gen macbook 2.0ghz with 160gb and 2gb of RAM for about $1050, I paid $1350.
Who cares about this really....you get a smaller cooler running cpu.....
I Just ordered a MacBook Pro, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2MB RAM, 160GB HD, 256MB Video, 15" Glossy and I couldnt be happier. I also ordered it on the last day of the free nano when you purchase a new mac for students program......and theyre giving me an 8GB ipod nano 3rd gen silver free because they ran out of the 2nd gen ones. Good Game.

In all seriousness, I'm in the same boat. I wanted to pick up a new MacBook this fall, guess now I'll wait until MWSF '08 spec bumps... On the plus side, most of the initial 10.5.0 bugs should be updated by that point.
Soo does this mean that I can use the next chips in place of my slow santa rosa T5250?
this sounds wicked. might actually give me a reason to upgrade to other than just "it's 30% faster", there's actually some wicked features in here. wimaxx, etc.
all in one chipset== much better battery life than chipset+extra chips.
go intel!
I am hoping that I can just replace my processor in my laptop.
I bought one of the dell inspiron 1520's wich is santa rosa based. Heck I could have even gotten a blue ray drive in the laptop but settled for a dvd+-rw drive because $600 dollars was not worth it.
