Sony shrugs off rumors of £299 PlayStation 3
For those keeping a close eye on the pricing drama surrounding Sony's PlayStation 3, you've no doubt heard the whispers suggesting that the firm may slash the price of its (comparatively) expensive console to better compete with those other guys. Apparently, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has informed GamesIndustry that the recent talk of such cuts -- particularly the ones pointing to a pared-down £299 ($602) model in the UK -- is nothing more than "rumor and speculation." 'Course, Sony has been known to give out those non-denial denials a time or two before, so we wouldn't be floored to see a few pounds shaved off in the not-too-distant future.[Via TechDigest]

the craziest thing about this post is that it points out that the Pound now out values the Dollar 2:1
The US economy is in a sad state.
James Ollier @ Sep 25th 2007 8:49PM
Its been like that for a while now

No, it's pents not ounces

A WEAKER DOLLAR is actually a sign of a STRONG EXPORT economy aka Bull market and is just what the USA needs to compete with China whom intentionally deeply undervalues their currency.
On the other hand, a strong dollar means it will be cheaper to import goods from other foreign lands than it would be to buy domestically produced products.

@ dumb caps lock guy
the problem with your theory is that America does WAY more importing than exporting. Not much is actually manufactured here in the US anymore. Electronics, textiles, etc have all moved to foreign, cheaper soil. So basically we have a weak dollar that we are using to pay for imports from countries that have stronger currency.
anyways you look at it, its not good for our economy for our currency to be this weak on the global market.
dj-kenpo @ Sep 26th 2007 1:14AM
I love caps lock, it's not a sign of strong export, it's a sign of a debt rather than surplus.
clinton had a surplus, bush created a debt. america has lost hundreds of billions in it's "war".
I remember when it was 70cents canadian to a us dollar. now it's 1:1. pretty soon the canadian dollar will be a few cents above rather than below.
trying to say a high credit card debt is wonderful is silly. america needs to chop the governments credit cards up before things get even worse.
harper @ Sep 25th 2007 9:11PM
I cant believe people voted Bush into power :S

How does the value of a currency, which is based on supply and demand, have anything to do with the state of the economy of the currency's host country?
If anything, a cheap USD is favorable to US exports, and less favorable to US outsourcing, so any fan of Lou Dobbs should be clapping their little sweaty hands.
fLUx @ Sep 25th 2007 9:20PM
Do you all expect it to be £1:$1?
Anyhow, yep, this roumor which has been denied would, get this - bring the PS3 down to current US prices for a 60GB PS3.....so when you get a price cut, we will still be far higher!
A $800 PS3 (current UK cost) isn't nice, nor is $80 games...
TOTAL CRAP
DickHardknocks @ Sep 25th 2007 9:48PM
From a business standpoint, slashing the price of the PS3 to $300 would carry tremendous PROs and TREMENDOUS CONs.
PRO #1 Is the PS3 would probably have far better sales now that great games are coming out.
PRO #2 - Due to the fact PS3 uses BluRay as a format all media for it neccesitates the BLU RAY DRIVE. A $300 PS3 would be the cheapest Blu Ray player for a home theater on the entire market and would PLACE THE FINAL NAILS IN HD DVD's COFFIN.
The PS3 would be a more logical choice than Xbox360's HDDVD drive (which BTW, is barely selling even at its reduced pricepoint)
CON - SONY would be losing big money on each console (even if they were stripped of the media slots and wifi) and would have to recoup losses through licensing fees which would drive up the prices of PS3 games and the price of development.
CON #2 The PS3 would become the most purchased Blu Ray player even for people who had no intention of buying games (the same thing happened in Japan when PS2 was the cheapest DVD player on the market) This would cause Blu Ray Prices to stay inflated to $25 ~$30 now that market penetration was so much better.
Benjamin @ Sep 26th 2007 12:20AM
300 pounds, not dollars. A $300 PS3 isn't happening any time soon. Last I heard they're still losing a ton of cash at $600, and even a modest price cut (while perhaps worthwhile in the long run) would be terribly uncomfortable, let alone a huge price slash like that.
DickHardknocks @ Sep 25th 2007 9:53PM
The Republican party and the coorporations that seek to make America a socialist oligarchy of the rich, producing nothing but dumb students want a weak dollar to go along with the STUPID trade deals this country makes with China and Japan which result in RIDICULOUS Trade deficits. When I think about American goods sitting on docks in foreign countries not being purchased because of the ridiculous tariffs and the anti-American sentiment it makes me quick to refuse purchasing anything foreign with the exception of the cheapest bare neccessities.
Don't let the BS media fool you, a weak US DOLLAR is BAD FOR AMERICAN and good for the multinational coorporations trying to bury her.
thethirdmoose @ Sep 25th 2007 10:41PM
"The republican party and corporations wish to make America a socialist oligarchy of the rich"
Dude, seriously. How do you have a socialist oligarchy of the rich? And since when are corporations socialist? Quit spewing YOUR BS.
I won't even start on everything else wrong with your post because I want to sleep.
thethirdmoose @ Sep 25th 2007 10:57PM
Socialism: A system based on public ownership of the means of production and distribution of wealth.
Oligarchy: Government by a few, usually wealthy, upper-class families.
How is it possible to have both of these...

guys seriously don`t worries 10 year the usa econamy will be way up agein if you knew anything about about bank runs or how bankers(who controll the countries) work

#1 Intelligent people don't use the word "dude"
#2 Coorporations are placing more and more money into fewer and fewer hands. This upper rung - this upper 1% of the World population are virtually impervious to law andentirely corrupted yet they have the financial power to either purchase or do whatever they choose through coersion of others.
THAT IS AN OLIGARCHY - rule by the few.
America is slowly falling towards socialism and with desireable programs like universal healthcare, "equal opportunity schooling" (which are by far inequal and failing to produce meaningful workers for America's future) you would be hard pressed to explain to me how you could possibly think America is not becoming socialist.

I really feel that a price drop on the PS3 or a cheap Blu-ray player before Christmas will be a reality for Americans. Everybody knows the rebate for 5 movies if you buy any Blu-ray player, including the PS3, from 07/01/07 to 09/30/07. Now Amazon has a promotion that if you buy a PS3 from Sept 17 to Sept 30 2007 you will get 2 additional Blu-ray movies that you could choose from a selection aside from the 5 free from the Sony rebate. And the movies aren't old Blu-ray movie releases that dont sell but movies like 300, The Departed, Happy Feet, Casino Royale etc... What's up with September 30 and why is Amazon willing to lose money by giving away these movies? I smell something ..and that thing I smell is probably a price drop for the PS3 or a Cheap Blu-ray coming this October or Thanksgiving so they need to sell all the old stock PS3's from the warehouses. I know the price drop and free movies for the Xbox 360 Hd-dvd player is because of the announced new Hd-dvd for Xbox360 coming next year. What do you guys think?
momma @ Sep 26th 2007 2:20AM
i like cheese....you guys are dorks, you dont even get the geek tag.
Bennett @ Sep 26th 2007 10:04AM
If they reduce the prince to US$299 and if they get to a position where they've sold more PS3s than Microsoft has sold X360s, I'd consider buying one.
Nate the Prophet @ Sep 26th 2007 4:13PM
All I have to say is this: If the rumored $400 US PS3 comes out this holiday season, I'll buy it. If not, I'll buy an HD DVD player and will likely NEVER get a PS3 (probably a Wii instead next year).
