Is this the ultraportable MacBook? (Answer: probably not)
Well kids, it was bound to happen. With Macworld speeding our direction, and all the exciting, unfounded, and wildly hopeful Apple rumors we've been hearing as of late, a doctored (or not doctored) picture was bound to crop up. Well, here you have it -- a rendering, real or otherwise, of the supposed (yet not in any way confirmed) ultraportable MacBook we've been hearing about. It goes without saying that this image is totally unverifiable and probably fake, especially taking into consideration that the point of origin is the first (and only) post of an unknown contributor to the MacRumors forum. As evidenced by the photo, the thin-as-hell MacBook has no optical drive and sports an extra wide trackpad and button, which makes the whole thing look pretty goofy. We're not going to let the fact that this prototype user also seems to be reading Dan Brown's Angels and Demons further shake our confidence -- though it's hard to get below zero. Inspect the picture above and draw your own conclusions.

Now there was someone with a bit more imagination.
BTW: remember to paste the url correctly

Looks faker than MJ's nose! But nice photoshop work though!
if it's a fake, apple should hire the person as the chief graphist!!!!!!!! it looks so real!
If this is real, people will admire the mouse pad if/when ut comes out, just like the iPod nano.
Sorry for double post
Thats a real pic. also expect to see the macbooks get a redesign similar to the color selections of the new ipods.
Just to add to the scepticism: it's pretty unlikely that a leaked image would look like this. If someone had managed to get a machine out of closely guarded environments, they would take a better photo than this. All just a bit of fun really..
Yeah. Never mind that most leaked shots look like a drunk person took them, armed only with a cameraphone incapable of focusing on anything. In relative terms, this is a masterpiece.
i think it´s fake because apple is clearly going to use the kind of keyboards (and their keys) that come with the macbooks and with the new external keyboards in 2007. there will be no more "old-style-keys" on their new machines - i´m sure!
hahahah
way fake
Creater needs to learn how to chop a MBP touchpad.
It's a well done fake. An interesting guess, but I'm guessing this is not the real deal. In looking at the trackpad up close there is a gaussian blur across where the wide trackpad images were spliced on the mockup ultraportable laptop in the image. It is a very well done job on photoshop to be sure.
did i read somewhere that apple is coming out with external drives for icrap stuff? So this is possible.
This is not the ultra portable MacBook...
It IS the new JUMBO Iphone.
Flame on
this thing seems off to me....
This macbook pro lacks hinges and a latch button, so im assuming it would be magnetically held in place..... bear in mind aluminum is not very magnetic. there also seems to be no sign of a recess on the front like the current macbooks, for u to get ur fingers underneath the lid to open it, hmmmmmm.
Fake. Note the lighting differences. First off, Shadows are well defined on the left MacBook, whle they aren't on the right one. Second, note the intensity of the light. Throughout most of the picture, the light is very strong and harsh, but its soft on the ultra-thin MacBook. Next off, note the keyboard. Ultraportables are known to have smaller keyboards than regular notebooks, however, the two notebooks pictured have the same keyboard. Also, look at the angle of the notebook. It lies on a plane inconsistent with the plane of the desk. I think they just took a picture of the left computer, cropped of some of the thickness and shrunk it a bit. They may have added the long NavPad to hide a flaw or something. Either way, if this was real, its all about the nub for pointing. Also, it looks a bit too thin to hold a laptop strength lithium battery, so you probably get weak cell phone or PDA batteries. Although, I expect Apple will phase out the keyboard in favour for a touch screen, so that you can use projected keys (less dirt/hair gets stuck) or mouse. Anyways, its all lies.
maybe REAL wasn't the correct word... maybe I should say a laptop that is already on the market
Looks real enough to me...I'm sure the multi-touch would be smart enough to ignore your wrists pressing down on the trackpad while you type so why not?
#1 reason this is probably fake: The industrial design of the Powerbook/Macbook hasn't changed significantly in 5 years. Considering the design iteration going on in the other product lines, it's almost certain that the MacBook like will get a significant visual refresh. The photo is just a subnotebook treatment of the old designs, and this is extremely unlikely.
I don't know, it looks nice, real or fake. The track pad is probably a bit OTT though.
If it is a shop, this guy knows his way around image editing and how to cover his tracks, no photoshop XML data or any other noticable embedded watermarks in the JPEG which are left by big image editing suites. Though it looks like the thing was run through MS paint (no modifications, just saving to JPEG to remove the aforementioned embedded data), which could be evidence towards him covering it up, opposed to just taking the picture from his camera memory. But I cannot be 100% sure.
What has Angels & Demons anything to do with confidence ?... It was an amazing book.
But ad ultraportable: I vote fake too. The MBP's shading seems strange, no? The light looks like it has to be in eye's view, where the iPod is, for that well-contrasting shadow on the keyboard, and the light can't be above. And if it's behind the MBP (where it looks like it is...), the MBP wouldn't have that shadow across its keyboard. Eh?
Even if it was real... I wouldn't say it looks portable enough to call "ultraportable."
Oh no! Apple news again! This is just ridiculous! I mean I know Apple has Macworld coming up, but why does engadget keep reporting on it!!!!??? Why must they do their jobs and report on tech news!?!?!?!??!??!?
Why don't you go somewhere else, and be happier.....
I think it's real. The guy's reading Angels and Demons, right? So he probably sold his soul to the devil to get some cool insider info and a super stealth secret mac!!
Bob, quiet down. It's not International Caps-Lock Day, there's no need to do that.
I fail. Why didn't I click on the reply to Bob Button?
no optical drive? someone must take note that the current macbook optical drive is on the right hand side and wouldn't be noticable by this pic... for the record though, that trackpad is F*ckin huge... They would have done the same thing to the macbook pro... no??
im not sure if this is a fake or not but according to the patent office, this may be very real in fact.
heres a link to the patent image that was filed by apple

You have to admit, a lot of these spy shots are far more blurry than this. Something to be said for that.
I thought apple always designed with style and fashion?
Is it just me, or does the keyboard on the supposedly new laptop still using the old Apple keyboard? It doesn't look like the new MacBook key design to me.
I want one!!
This is evidently a Hackintosh, Leopard installed ina a x86 machine.
It's called KALYWAY 10.5.1 DVD.
With that you can installed on a large number of models and take the pictures posing as an Apple hardware.
It's fake, here's my evidence:
It's not Angels and Deamons in the back, its Änglar och Demoner - the swedish translation. Which means the picture is fake. ..because even if a Swede would happen to be working for Apple and leaking this photo: would such a hypothetical Swede really need to read the swedish version of Dan Brown?
Does it really look that fake...?
1. Lighting simply looks like a desk based lamp of some sort positioned behind the alledged said 'fake' or prototype.
2. Shadow on bigger laptop is consistent with lighting placed in position behind smaller laptop.
3. Why wouldn't some 'random' first time punter (like me no less) post this...??? Apple have a huge PR/marketing train that would do very well out of something like this. Look at you guys and girls (??) talking about it. Apple need all of this sort of publicity you are giving them to keep cutting down the advantage PC's have over the mighty Apple.
2008 WILL be a huge year for Apple especially when they sort out issue with iPhone. Hopefully the Apple TV thing goes off too.
But then again, maybe it is fake - 3 cheers to the orginal 'poster' who has kept us all preoccupied with it :-)
