Everex's Cloudbook coming to Wal-Mart by month's end
Well folks -- it's official. The Everex / Packard Bell / FIC Nanobook / Cloudbook / CE260 (phew) that we recently got some face time with is actually coming Stateside... to Wal-Mart. That's right, the Eee crown-threatener will be available on January 25th of this year, featuring a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 30GB hard drive, and a 800 x 480 display for the extra-affordable price of $399. The system will be sporting Everex's gOS Rocket, the Google-ified version of Ubuntu which powers the company's cheapo desktop. Watch your back, front, and sides, ASUS.

Why is there a Facebook icon on there?
Facebook is part of gOS and the enlighten window manager. Lots of on-line icons in gOS - blogs, meebo, Google office stuff, and gOS 2.0 has Google gears for off-line work.

In the bottom/right part of the page it says:
"For the masses
You don't have to imagine anymore. Your new CloudBook will be available ***January 20*** at fine reallers throughout North America..."
uh?
Yup, Walmart. When I think fine retailers, that's what I think of.
But it's already out the one I linked to.
Not in the US, and it's not the same machine.
Do you think it would be possible to purchase one from America to ship to the UK?
I don't know if WalMart ships to the UK. Kinda doubt it, but there's always ebay.
I believe that the British version of this machine is a Packard Bell, and is out already. You should be able to find the Cloudbook in the UK, but called the Packard Bell EasyNote XS.
Sure just send me the money and I'll ship it to you.
Lol how do I know you won't rip me off.
The 30GB and the DVI output are certainly compelling.
Off-center screen, clit mouse, and a ton of bundled Google crap? Not to mention, when Facebook goes the way of Friendster & MySpace a few months from now, that icon will be useless.
Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick with my EEE & Windows XP.
I have an Eee as well, but I may pick one of these up for comparison. Maybe I'll give it to my wife.
I do find it hard to believe that this thing could possibly be better than the Eee, though.
Id be more worried about the Via CPU
They tend to make gutless cellertrons look good
Who's got OSX86 on this thing?
3-5hr battery and 30gb hd for $400?
Yes please. I'm deleteing the Eee from my wish list and picking up one of these on release day.
Who cares if the HD is solid state? All I care about is the battery life and weight. Screen just needs to be usable. Its an ultra portable and fills that void nicely.
I wont buy one until I see it displayed on a hanger.
gOS is the worst operating system I've ever used, period, and that includes Windows98 (which was horrendously bad). Luckily it should be easy to switch to a respectable lightweight OS like Xubuntu or something similar.
i wanna trackpad
Let's first forget the power and storage. This thing is on stilts and looks unappealing to the average consumer. The eee pc might be underpowered compared to this but the consumer draw factor of the eee pc is intense. I don't think, this will catch up with the eee. The mere fact that it looks strange and the track ball is not located in a familiar position, adds more sales effort in convincing the average joe or jill.
Note on this sales pitch "My screen might be on stilts but I sure have more storage space and a better processor".
The world as we know it. It's like being initially attracted to a physically sexy bodacious "girl/guy" and asking "her/him" for a date. Honestly, you would think twice of dating somebody with all their "teeth missing" and having an extra arm no matter how many menza iq points she, he or it has.
I think I will stick with my 17 inch screen and full size keyboard. Really...is it THAT tasking to carry around a 6-10 lb laptop that is ridiculously more capable?
My question to every other entry-level laptop manufacturer is, if Everex can throw DVI-I onto a $400 laptop, why can't you? Death to the VGA Opression!
As scary as the Everex name is, the specs on this thing do really make the Eee look weak in comparison...my only question is, how does the Via CPU hold up to the Eee's? The clock speed may be higher, but that really doesnt mean anything...
For all of those interested in the CloudBook (or plan to purchase one in the future), there's an online community and message board forming here: CloudBook Lounge (http://www.cloudbooklounge.com/). It looks like it will also have product reviews and a mods & hacks section when the product is released. Good looking site, I just registered on their forum...
