MacBook Pro mockup contest results: the winner is you!
When we saw Spicu's Air-inspired MacBook Pro mockup last week, we asked if you could guys could do better. In terms of true-to-reality, the jury's still out until Apple hits us with the truth, but when it comes to "imagination" and "rainbows," you guys win in a landslide. Up top we have the MacBook Pro touch from Alex W, who slapped an exterior touchscreen onto the MacBook Pro's lid for maximum optimism. Check out the gallery below for the rest of the entries so far, with descriptions if they sent 'em. Thanks so much to everybody who participated, and be sure to check in next time when we prototype new facial hair configurations for the Engadget staff -- sure to be a riot.

I R Soo Expensive! hahah that's rock and roll. hey, i use a MBP, but if you can't laugh at that one, you need to be reprogrammed.
zfurie @ Feb 15th 2008 9:49PM
Or should I say UNprogrammed!
Matt @ Feb 15th 2008 4:37PM
No. 8 is officially the best thing ever.
phanbouy @ Feb 15th 2008 4:47PM
#12 is kinda rad too
Andrew Procter @ Feb 15th 2008 4:38PM
lol, "I R sooo expensive."
Nicole @ Feb 15th 2008 4:38PM
The old ThinkPad style butterfly keyboard cracked me up.
alias_ @ Feb 15th 2008 4:38PM
the one where it says "i r expensive" was brilliant. :) but the funny thing is engadget is ruunning this contest in request to apple, because they havent got any design ideas left. so this is where they could get the new designs for free... all the hard work is from people who sent this in. and if apple usses one of these designs apple gets all the credit. but have to admit some of them were really good. mac to the future
oshean @ Feb 15th 2008 4:40PM
Cue M.C. Hammer music:
can touch this!
Chebwa @ Feb 15th 2008 4:45PM
Where's my check?
Ireland @ Feb 15th 2008 8:55PM
Don't you mean cheque? :P
Chebwa @ Feb 15th 2008 9:27PM
...no?
Kizorblade @ Feb 15th 2008 11:27PM
Either is correct I think. Cheque is British and check American.
dagamer34 @ Feb 15th 2008 4:46PM
Two of them I think tried to make the mockup in two minutes or less..
Tony @ Feb 15th 2008 4:48PM

HAHAHA.
You know, that mock up could be making fun of the MacBook Air and it's lack of features, or it can be making fun of those who don't like the MacBook Air and it's lack of features.
hmmmmmm.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Feb 15th 2008 4:47PM
I like the one that has an iphone esque to it. It's neat and looks like it would be really good for people who like mini devices, touchscreens and the feel of a laptop
Jimmie @ Feb 15th 2008 4:51PM
Thank God none of these people are Apple designers. *gag*
Razor1973 @ Feb 15th 2008 4:57PM
"we asked if you could guys could do better"?
Fara @ Feb 15th 2008 4:59PM
The iphone-inspired one (4-6) is one of the ugliest laptops I've seen. And it's got a Dell feel over it. Old Dell, from a few years ago. Still, it ain't as bad as the XPS m1730.
michael @ Feb 15th 2008 5:01PM
So can we now have a contest for Sony Vaios, Dell XPS, or other top-of-the-line laptops?
I wouldn't mind putting up a contest for mock up of those too. I can come up with some good ones.
tcc3 @ Feb 15th 2008 5:03PM
4-6 looks more like recent "shiny" HP/Compaq designs to me.
Hung @ Feb 15th 2008 5:06PM
Is it just me, or does Don Z's design (4-6) actually suck? I understand the satire in the other bad designs and their comical effects, but I think he's actually serious. A touch screen keyboard? Art Lebedev did it.
I'm sure it took a while to draw up those graphics in photoshop/GIMP/MS clip art, but the thing looks like one of Conan's "What if they mated?" compilations. An iPhone and a DS got tipsy at the Christmas party and ended up with that piece of shit.
I hope Don Z intended the design to be a joke and Engadget did a poor job of publicizing that. I pray that this is the explanation.
phanbouy @ Feb 15th 2008 5:31PM
i agree, suddenly i can't even look at my iphone the same way again
Ayle @ Feb 15th 2008 5:07PM
I don't think the mbp will be much tinner than it already is for a while: it's using a dedicated graphic card and a regular mobile processor not a low-voltage version... We'll just get penryn, a redesigned keyboard and maybe blu-ray.
phanbouy @ Feb 15th 2008 5:08PM
to john m, i'm gonna use your mockup #8 as my avatar. let me know if you're insulted. =)
John M @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:45PM
Glad you enjoyed the mock up! took me a total of 5 minutes in class
tony @ Feb 15th 2008 5:28PM
Mac Pro Elite FTW!! Damn you Apple, build it already! Screw thin, I want the biggest, baddest book eva!
bradwjensen @ Feb 16th 2008 11:33AM
I definitely think that portable is way Sweet also! Idk about the battery pack though, lmao!
soapn @ Feb 15th 2008 5:28PM
How about a Mac Pro mock-up contest, it's been a long time, about 5 years (g5), since it's changed on the outside.
Greg @ Feb 15th 2008 6:14PM
I love the one with the touch screen on the back of the screen. The only problem with that is that it will probably take more battery power to show the apple logo on the back :p
JAG @ Feb 15th 2008 6:56PM
1 and 10 most probably (wishful thinking). I need one real soon so, whatever but please do it now!!!!
wickedpheonix @ Feb 15th 2008 7:24PM
Don't you love how #4-6 have this HUGE SIM slot on the side of the screen? And a headphone port? And a hole that I would almost describe as a paper-clip hole except for the fact that it's so BIG? [/sarcastic tone]
I think that that mint blue look is the sexiest color I have seen applied to an Apple product thought - props.
As for the featured design (2 LCDs on either side of the screen part of the clamshell), all I really have to say is redundant and expensive. If Apple wants a tablet display, it will have to change its hinge design. My only request here is that they MUST include a stylus though - touch alone will absolutely not do it for anything other than a gimmick. Pen input is essential for any real productivity, including but not limited to journaling and Photoshop work - otherwise you spend less time going through menus and screens, and more time actually typing anything in.
holycow @ Feb 15th 2008 7:39PM
I R SO EXPENSIVE is so true!
shaliron @ Feb 15th 2008 9:37PM
The fourth one is phat!
Aaron @ Feb 16th 2008 3:58AM
Anyone knows if Apple is updating its regular macbook line anytime soon? I really like the Black Macbook but hoping that they can put up a LED Backlit screen to replace the current one.
Thx
zapot8 @ Feb 16th 2008 4:17AM
lol John M wins hands down
omar @ Mar 2nd 2008 9:00AM
wuxga 15" 1920 x 1200p screen (like the one on the latest alienware lappie - Area-51 m15x high)
http://www.alienware.com/product_detail_pages/area-51_m15x/area-51m_overview.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AREA51M15X-AI1&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT
it should be an extra option like they have in alienware and not some crazy thing you setup in ur house after the warranty has died.
