Hmmph. Would you look at that? Nary a fortnight after EA proclaimed that Sony's PlayStation 3 would
best the Xbox 360 in sales during 2008, said prophecy is already starting to come true. Granted, we're only talking one month so far, but according to new US sales data from NPD Group, Microsoft's console actually slipped to third in the numbers race. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo's darling took home the gold (
again) with 274,000 units sold in January, while the PS3 slipped in just 5,000 units below with 269,000. As for Redmond, it only moved 230,000 units last month, but spokesman David Dennis boldly stated that the firm believes its third-place finish to be "an anomaly." Considering that the Grim Reaper is
well on its way to claiming the life of the 360s HD DVD add-on while Sony relishes the decision to cram BD drives
within the PS3, we're not so sure these figures won't become a trend.

Let's put it in perspective. December's sales as reported by the same blog:
Nintendo Wii: 1.35 million
Xbox 360: 1.26 million
PlayStation 2: 1.12 million
PlayStation 3: 797,600
January's sales
Nintendo Wii: 274,000
Xbox 360: 230,000
PlayStation 3: 269,000
So a lot of people got their 360 for the holidays instead of in January. The numbers for January between the systems aren't that far apart. What you are seeing is the after holidays slow down. It;s not that the PS3 has gained, it's the fact that a lot of people got their systems for the holidays so they slowed down.
Here's November's sales as copied form hardcoreware.net
November 2007 Hardware Sales
1) Nintendo DS | 1,530,000
2) Wii | 981,000
3) Xbox 360 | 770,000
4) PlayStation Portable | 567,000
5) PlayStation 2 | 496,000
6) PlayStation 3 | 466,000
they should have got PS3 also for holiday right, i think its because of blu-ray
@fastolfe
Actually, all you need is one pack in game that leaves one hell of a first impression on people. Makes everyone go out and buy the Wii, only to be disappointed when they get home and learn there isn't much else beyond Wii Sports.
xbox is no even third, on www.techztalk.com they say its 6th after PS2, DS and PSP
It seems that most people in this thread forget two things:
1. These are US sales only, globally the PS3 is even stronger .
2 The failure rate of the 360 is horrific. I wouldn't buy anything that is so crappilly built
With Blu-ray, extreme power and free multiplayer combined with an exceptional 2008 game lineup, I'm quite astonished the 360 still sells at all?
I'm not a fanboi, I love all companies making good stuff. I'm one of the few who love Vista...
Don't flame me for this, but surely if a Blu-Ray standalone player is around £500, and the PS3 is about £350, the PS3 must have something less than the standalon player. But it appears to be much more:
-Blu-Ray Player
-Games Console
-Media centre
-Surround Sound support (BD and HD DVD players don't currently have 5.1 capabilities, but the Xbox with HD addon and the PS3 both can do 5.1)
Whereas the standalone BD player can only read movies and CDs.
Does this mean that the PS3 BD drive is of worse quality than dedicated movie players?
Something is fishy, neighbourinoes...
I would say the £500 standalone player is making a profit and the £350 ps3 is heavily subsidized by Sony. The ps3 gets to make money on the game licensing while the standalone player doesn't. The xbox 360 is likewise subsidized by ms.
Who's crying now? I know, all those idiots that at one time thought it was a VERY bad idea to put a Blu-ray drive into the PS3! Guess what? YOu were Terribly wrong. It was the best decision Sony made with the PS3. Hahaha.
Yes. A good decision for Sony, but a BAD decision for the software developers and publishers.
People are buying PS3s and using them to play Blu-Ray movies. They aren't buying that many games, and the developers are having a bitch of a time developing for it because everything about the system is a pain in the ass for programmers.
I may get a PS3 to play movies, but there's really nothing compelling me to use it for gaming. I'm happy with my 360.
However, a cheap Blu-Ray player sounds pretty cool, even if it looks like a George Foreman grill.
I have both latest gen consoles (well, all three really, if you can count the Wii) and I definitely prefer the 360 over the PS3... Virtually everything about it... better controllers, more games, a better variety of game styles, games that are more fun, better multimedia features. And can you name a game that looks better on the PS3 than the 360 version? So far there haven't been any. Even the games where the PS3 was the lead platform the 360 version is at least as good (and unfortunately, because the PS3 was the lead platform, the 360 version isn't as well done as it should have been, paling in quality compared to other 360 titles).
The PS3 has a lot of potential, but even 15 months into it it still hasn't been tapped. We're still waiting on the promised great exclusives, in many cases with no announced release date even. Mine sits gathering dust most of the time because I enjoy the 360 experience so much more. Even my younger brother, who has been a rabid PS fanboy for years, has conceded that the 360 is a better game system right now, and has purchased many more games for his 360 than PS3, despite only having the 360 for 5 months vs 15 for his PS3. He's tired of waiting for good games.
If you're really objective, it's pretty clear which box is the better gaming platform. The PS3 is mostly being bought because it plays Blu-ray discs, not because of its games. Sony has to sell games to succeed, and so far it isn't happening.
I bought my PS3 around XMAS time and you know what it's still in the box, There are hardly no games for it...All my gaming is done on the XBOX 360...
Can someone ban this guy, please? I almost felt like I'm gonna low-rank all of his posts that are recently made, but then I realize that it's such a waste of my time.
Oh look, a bunch of ugly acne ridden American teenagers start acting as though someone has just pissed in their cornflakes. Face it guys, your worst nightmares are coming true. The PS3 is outselling your beloved console. Go choke on dick.
THere are no elites to be found which is what I have been waiting to replace my current 360 with.
Sony has won, they came out with the PS3 and intoduced Blue-ray, Xbox was too cheap to put hd-dvd in their console and now PS3 is out selling xbox and coming out with great games. Sony has the best LCD tvs, PS3, and they have blue-ray. They cant be stopped. Everything has paid off for them!
Ok folks. I hopped in my time machine and found this:
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/21/wii-outsells-both-360-and-ps3-in-january-despite-shortages/
January 2007 sales (1 year ago) to now:
Wii - 436,000 units to 274,000
360 - 294,000 units to 230,000
PS3 - 244,000 units to 269,000
Time to add Microsoft to the Engadget Deathwatch list. I never thought I'd hear myself say it but "Go Sony!"
Don't ban him! Thanx to his post about the sony card $100 rebate I just bought the ps3! Thanx Sinai!
The only reason this happend is because Microsoft under estimated post holiday demand, and the 360 sold out. An announcement about this came out a few days ago. Why is it surprising that Sony was able to sell off more of their surplus units, especially when Blu-Ray is clearly the winner in the format war.
Hopefully they keep it up.
Just in case anyone wants to see the total sales from all three "next-gen consoles". These are just estimates though according to the site. Also does anyone know where I can find the numbers relating to how many games each console has sold?

Forgot to add the link.
The whole argument over buying the PS3 is just ridiculous. That's like saying you bought a computer just to play solitaire.
The Ps3 may lack in games as of now, but the future looks very promising. And what's so great is they just don't make a game, they try to make a game that raises the bar. Be with graphics or gameplay, PS3 blows 360 out of the water when it comes ingenuity. 360 makes... FPS games. Not only that but people seem to forget that they still are making Ps2 games. So really ps3 isn't lacking. Microsoft just abandoned the Xbox, where as Sony choose to continue to entertain it's last gen audience. Don't forget Ps3 plays ps1 games as well. So that triples the library of what 360 has. Okay there is backwards emulation, but is it compatible with every xbox game?
Online, Look I already pay for online service, why should I pay to play my games online? Free online play is a big seller for me.
Right ok ive had an xbox 360 and sold it i now own a ps3 and i hate to say it but im not impressed running a 10mb internet connection i cant even play 4 player matches online on some of my games(turok). The network is ropey at best and the selection of titles is very limited. I would rather pay sony £40 a year for a network that works. On top of that i didnt buy it for bluray i bought it for games or lack there of. There is no pain out yet in the UK and no killer app and you know what although my xbox broke 3 times i can live with that because of the list of games as long as my arm the ps3 has been here for over a year and still no killer app. I mean burnout is great assasins creed awesome, Turck and COD 4 also good but there all out on xbox. Also where are the 2 player games i got motostorm and where is the 2 player spilt screen. The navigation system is just not even on par with the 360. I like my ps3 but i loved my xbox the ps3 just doesnt give me oo la la that the xbox had. it kinda feels like i own a farrari but it runs like a modeao. There is just nothing that screams at me i need to own that PS3 exclusive game the Xbox is still screaming at me look ive got gears of war 2 and a lot more comming your way and my internet is at least capable of playing FPS games.
Oh and for anyone who calls me a fane boy here is proof that i have a ps3
game tag eaglefirestorm
The 360 may be less powerfull but it uses that power even games on both consoles have been rendered on a 360.
Do me a lemon if you read this give me 10 exclusive games comming to just the PS3 anything to give me hope for the future.
Oh and i dont even own a pc im a mac fan.
I bought the wii at launch, played Zelda for 68 hrs and then it sat for 6 months. I bought Mario Galaxy, never finished it and recently bought Smash Bros.Brawl- fun but has the worst online options even outdone by the ds. The online is HORRIBLE. I mean really bad, took me over 2hrs to send my brother an email after he bought one. I like the wii-mote, but beyond that it has no real simulators, advancements in graphics and solid titles outside of Nintendo Franchises...well, few. They say gaming isn't about graphics, but I think nintendo is missing the point. It's about gameplay AND graphics. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo goes HD next time around (wii2) but until then I'm left a bit dissappointed. I feel like my only options are mario, zelda, or metriod and I'm sick of that after 4 generations of nintendo systems. I'm going to buy a PS3 as I think it's finally adding up and is more of a multimedia center. Being 28 it appeals to me more than the wii. By the way, Zelda TP was the worse game since Zelda II and I've finished ALL of them minus oracle of seasons and ages. The last best Zelda was Minish Cap. Nintendo should let capcom produce more of there games.
you Americans are lucky! being that there are nearly 300 million of you, things can be cheap and profits are still high.
so many comments include "i use the 360 for gaming and the ps3 for home theatre", in australia this unheard of...
in Australia we are stuck with $700AUD playstaions (40GB) and $730AUD xbox 360 elites (what the!?!?!). and New Zealand is even worse off.
this is continuing even though the aussie dollar is at 93 US cents, so what the %&$# is going on!?
o btw australia is xbox 360 turf, mainly cos the base one costs $520.
but as everywhere else in the world the wii is out selling everything...
