Everex's Cloudbook now in stock at Wal-Mart, finally
It's been a long time coming, but after some confusion and a few false starts, Everex's Eee PC-competing Cloudbook is now finally available to order from Wal-Mart's website. As we've mentioned, now that ZaReason has dropped it, Wal-Mart is also now the only place you can get your hands on the budget-priced laptop, at least for the time being (though you can get the identical Packard Bell-branded model in the UK). Hit up the read link below if you're ready to part with that $400, just be sure you know what you're getting yourself into.

Sorry Everex try again.
In the hacker world, these are "throwaway laptops"
Do whatever nefarious deeds you will and when the feds come looking for you, you simply need to destroy this cheap $400 piece of evidence.
Except this one doesn't even have built in Wifi. At least the identically priced eee has that much. And if you're looking for true throwaway, buy the $299 eee that also has built in wifi. lol. This thing isn't even good for that task!
My bad, apparently it does have wifi. I think my point still stands about the $299 eee being a better hacking tool though. I wonder where I got the idea that this cloudbook didn't have wifi? Whatever. Again, mea culpa. Wish Engadget had comment editing. Is it that difficult?
Looks like a coffee mug warmer
ok boys and girls...
just wondering... is this thing even worth $400?
i am not to up on the umpc shtuff and i need some knowledgeable input.
thanks,
Only if you think a paper weight is worth $400.
if you really need to buy some cheap portable computing, stick with an eee. This thing has way too many issues to make it a real option.
It's relative. Is the MacBook Air worth 1799?
why the hate? same everything as eee, except with hard drive.
OK, I lied, different chipset and Linux flavor, but same screen res, weight, size, price.
If you use a usb optical mouse, is there any difference in user experience from the eee? Especially if you put XP (with supported drivers) on it?
And, doesn't everyone who reads engadget love to see competition in the cheap 2 lb and under laptop market?
this was going to be my next purchase, mainly cuz the battery life is more than 2 hours.
was.
I'm running a Cloudbook with WinXP on it now. IMHO, It's better than the Eee. I didn't have to nLite anything. Fully driver support from Everex. 30GB is better than 4GB any day in my book.
what is this crap? where's my REAL umpc already? like the one in the digital kitchen origami video?
The only reason engadget slams this thing is because it is sold at wal-mart. I'm not a fan of the company but damn, even if you political bias is aligned with mine it has no place on a blog about gadgets. Autoblog does this too and it irritates me to no end. Don't be like the old media guys, please? Pretty please?
err, I wasn't replying to your comment sinai, must have accidentally hit reply.

NO WAY MAN!
WALMART SSSSUUUXXXXXXXXXX!

Skuul sux too. But most people don't mind.
I don't understand why people make these things. I just bought a used iBook for less and it would run rings around this piece of junk.
You need to read product specs before you bash it... I don't think they make a laptop now without WiFi.
Furthermore, a TRUE HACKER doesn't worry about a lack of....
A TRUE HACKER adds wifi using an equally expendable WiFi adapter.
Used iBook is a lot of money, and...it's Apple hardware...which is a little bit harder to use for other OSes.
With that photo of a closed Cloudbook...
it looks like a high-tech ashtray!
LOL
This thing is awesome. I've totally ordering one soon. Much better to take to the Wifi cafes than my $1300 + work machine laptop. I even have a N800 + BT keyboard already, but I want a real laptop to take with me without lugging around my main machine. This is AWESOME!
lets see upgradabl 30 gig hard drive, upgradable memory, same price as 4 gig eee , thinking, thinking
So many haters in the world. Shoot, windows wasn't built in a day. At least companies are starting to make non-wintel machines now.
The Cloudbook is nice and all on paper, but the aesthetics of it, that's what I really don't like. The keyboard comes right to the edge of the front of the laptop which I'm not too comfortable with. I also have my own troubles with using the trackpad (but the positioning does make sense, so it's not so farfetched). I personally have an EeePC and I love it. Since the Eee is more of a portable internet device than anything else, I could care less about the HD size and whatever in comparison.
