Intel's quad-core QX9300 laptop CPU in Q3?
Check it high-enders. DigiTimes has been milking their Taiwanese motherboard sources for information about Intel's laptop-class, Core 2 Extreme QX9300 processor. They've come away with a Q3 ship date and price of $1,038 when purchasing the quad-core proc in bulk. Digitimes' own sources had originally pegged the QX9300 for a May release. But such is the life of the muckraker.

Oh oh maybe a delay? what about Yorkfield (non extreme)?
iH8Engadget @ Mar 14th 2008 2:24AM
They need to put THAT in the next revision of MacBook Pro's and refresh the damn exterior casing of the laptop aswell. Then it'll be something a hell of a lot better than that POS refresh they did like 2-3 weeks back.
Better yet... put that in the next "Macbook Air". Cause these new MBA's are sexy on the outside, but slow as hell on the inside. This will help the new Macbook /Pros/Air's/Whatever's be the true "screamers" Steve-o always calls them whenever he announces em at his product release events.

Considering MBAs already have melt problems anyways and they are as you say rather underpowered, imagine throwing a quadcore in there. No.
Leach @ Mar 14th 2008 8:24AM
He refers to them as "screamers" because of the screaming that occurs when you get the bill...
Randy @ Mar 14th 2008 1:11PM
Um, more than likely, You'll see these Quads in the next Mac book Pro refresh.

these things make laptops hot...really hot

eh.. w/e - My balls are already crispy from my MBP
Spongy @ Mar 14th 2008 4:01AM
Mine are too.
Its a health risk really, do you you have kids? I really hope to one day, maybe i can sue apple for my lack of kids.

Get yourself a desktop, if you honestly need a quad-core..

Skiing Holiday + Hi Def Cam + Quad-core Laptop + Sony Vegas = Joy
SimonRichards @ Mar 14th 2008 4:20AM
When it comes to hi-def editing, more cores makes a massive difference! Sure dual core is great for playing hi-def footage, but for editing it with pro editing tools, you need the power.

As much as I'd like more processing power, I'd prefer more memory. My Macbook with 2gb is so slow when running Parallel, Toast, Firefox, and much more. Even the newer refresher with 4gb capacity is still not enough. Anyone know when we'll be able to cramp 8gb+ in a notebook?
nikster @ Mar 14th 2008 4:53AM
I find 4GB to be plenty and I have about 20 apps running right now, including a few heavyweights. OS X surely beats the pants off XP when it comes to managing memory, that is definitely not your problem.
Parallels / VMWare are problematic b/c they suck CPU even when not in use, usually between 10 and 20%. Use Activity Monitor to find what's causing your slowdown, I bet it's Parallels. Particularly older versions had egregious bugs where they would consume CPU to no end...
I want the quad core but also longer battery life... hmmm....

Not everyone can always work in their office..

Well, the difference is not just 100 MHz.
50% more cache, 45nm vs 65nm, lower heat production and required voltage, new instruction sets (extremely important if video editing), unlocked multiplier for overclock.
There are lots of people who also "throw" money to a shoe from a pricey brand while something maybe 100 times cheaper does the same thing. Here, at least there is a significant difference between the processors.
Chris @ Mar 14th 2008 3:59PM
I've never even heard of this cpu, will someone give me a quick rundown.
AutoTom @ Mar 14th 2008 10:46PM
did engadget not JUST do that?
stoner
AlphaTeam @ Mar 14th 2008 8:53PM
Shouldn't it be the QT9300?
FXi @ Mar 14th 2008 8:53PM
Hopefully you can overclock at least 2 of the cores when you are plugged into the wall. This combined with 1066 DDR3 SOdimms should be quite a machine.
