Fujitsu showcases pricey Atom-based U2010 UMPC

Might as well get this right out in the open: Fujitsu's forthcoming U2010 UMPC is slated to cost just shy of $1,300 when it lands in Taiwan this July. Yeah, that's even more costly than the Gigabyte M528 that got priced earlier this week. Nevertheless, those with coin to chuck can look forward to a rotatable 5.6-inch 1,024 x 600 touchscreen, integrated 3.5G WWAN / GPS and a six-row keyboard. Sure, there's not much else at 1.34-pounds that we'd want in our left cargo pocket, but a family's got to eat, you know?

Um... Any point in buying a UMPC/MID at this price? Just get an ultra-compact laptop, at least you'll get a decent piece of hardware intead of this uber-pricy crap.

This literally does fit in your pocket though. It's another category of laptops,not directly comparable. Desktops are better than laptops per dollar too, you know.

Perhaps your pockets, but this doesn't "literally" fit in any pocket I have. Perhaps you ought to look a little more closely at the size of this thing, Ypocaramel.

Large cellphones are about all that will fit in a pocket. Anything larger needs to go in a bag. Unless it REALLY fits in a pocket, it will not have the ubiquity of a smartphone, it will be limited like a notebook.

We don't need yet another category differentiated arbitrarily by size but not by function. New category or not, this machine IS directly comparable to UMPCs.

Well, it's not designed to be an MID, but more of a successor to the U810 UMPC right? So it's not really surprising it'd be priced the same?

The price problem is not the problem of specific device, not MID in general (I only know 2 priced MIDs, both are over 1k, expected price was "around $500").
The problem is with price policy in general.
Remember OneLaptopPerChild? The "laptop for developing countries $100 per lappie". The final product somehow became $200 instead of $100.

They just milk us like cows. Don't buy this crap. It won't fit in a small pocket :)

Anyone can build a $1000+ MID or UMPC. The sweetspot (as ASUS as demonstrated) is getting this under the cost of a baseline, lowcost laptop.

I bought the previous model (refurbished) just a few weeks ago, the u810 for $700 USD. I don't understand why people think this is pricey. The other UMPCs cost as much, or more. Just take a look at the HTC X9500 ($1800), and the VIAO UX57 ($2500). Fujitsu is actually pretty cheap when it comes to UMPCs, but at the cost of having less processing power comparable to other UMPCs.

UMPCs in general are more expensive -- they are NOT laptops. The generally agreed upon definition for UMPC is a computer less than 8 inches in size, with a "normal" screen resolution, e.g. 1024px wide or 800px wide; includes tablet mode AKA a touch screen (all except OQOs have them,) and runs full Windows, not WinCE. They're meant to be the bridge between PDAs and laptops, something portable but with the power and resolution to run full windows applications.

And yes, miniaturization costs money, lots of money. If you've ever bought a PDA before, you'd know that they can cost half as much as a good laptop and have the specs of something that costs only a quarter of that in a desktop. Considering how much more more capability you get out of a UMPC, as comparable to PDAs, the prices are not unreasonable. A HX 4700, new, was something like $600. I paid $700 for a Asus 730w two years ago. I could buy a u810 today for $1000 MSRP.

Re: The EEE PC.
It is not a UMPC, it is too big and doesn't have a digitizer. It's technically a mini notebook. Build quality is crap, and so are the specs, especially compared to other mini notebooks, but I suppose it is the first budget mini-note of it's kind so you can't expect better. For $300, it's spectacular.

this looks like a worth successor to the U810. Just wish the keyboard can be used for typing. I think I might get a Ideapad U110 instead. Or a Sony TZ. Damn I don't know what i want for college!

i have the u810 which is an amazing little machine and worth every penny.

i can't wait to put in an order for this.

people that complain about these simply have no clue what they are talking about. they aren't designed as a laptop replacement.

the people that find units like this usefull are people who travel A LOT. i hit the two corners of canada and everywhere in between on a very regular basis and having something like this to lug around instead of a laptop is a life saver.

what the retards complaining in here don't seem to understand is that this comes with a cradle. that means at the office i put this in a cradle and work away. when it's time to hop on a plane i fold it up and toss in in my brief case with everything else.

when i take it out for use while traveling you won't believe how many professionals take notice and ask where they can get one because they are so tired of lugging a fuckin regular sized or even compact laptop around.

for those complaining please get a fuckin clue before posting. the internet wasn't meant for retards.
