Even more on Dell's Studio 1535 / 1536 and the Studio brand

As for the Studio line itself, it sounds like what we heard before was about right: Dell's fast-tracking it to be their new higher-end consumer brand (more here and here). Check out their internal description:
"The Studio line is a more feature rich version of the existing Inspiron line. This series of computers features more multimedia functionality, better processor offerings, and more personalization options than the Inspiron series. Dell continues to sell Inspiron systems, but these are now considered our value series computers for customers who prioritize cost above features. ... Being able to choose from a series of color options and a wide range of hardware offerings helps personalize each system to the buyer. The Studio series is expected to be the best selling line of notebooks for the Consumer segment."

Umm....should one of those numbers in the title be "1436" instead of both being the same?
zach rattner @ Jun 15th 2008 6:11PM
No, it's just a roundabout way of saying 1.
Erik @ Jun 15th 2008 6:12PM
Never mind about that 1436, but I still doubt they should be the same.
Kevin @ Jun 15th 2008 6:39PM
Historically, the numerical series ending in 5 will have Intel procs, whereas the 6 will feature AMD.
AWWang @ Jun 15th 2008 9:41PM
Yeah, Dell's models ending with 0s and 5s are Intel CPU Based and models ending with 1s and 6s are AMD CPU Based...
Sounds confusing but you'll get used to em'! HP and Others are so darn confusing you won't want to touch them...
DrunkMonkey @ Jun 15th 2008 10:11PM
HP isn't too confusing. Intel models end in a T and AMD models end in a Z.
JohnTitor @ Jun 15th 2008 11:20PM
right but where do all the rest come from?
Mark Anderson @ Jun 15th 2008 6:11PM
That's mighty purty.
Yup.
phanbouy @ Jun 15th 2008 6:13PM
um... hey another laptop. hot diggity damn.
totally off topic, but Maddox made a new post a couple weeks ago. funny stuff (anything that makes fun of Dave Matthews is ok in my book): http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=puns
Mike @ Jun 15th 2008 9:01PM
Maddox lol oh man....been a while since i've been to the greatest page in the universe :)
Stephanie Jobs @ Jun 15th 2008 6:16PM
why would anyone buy this over the Macbook Pro?
Griff @ Jun 15th 2008 6:18PM
Maybe because they want to...
Erik @ Jun 15th 2008 6:21PM
Chances are it's cheaper?
ethana2 @ Jun 15th 2008 6:27PM
Apple locks OSX to their machines.
Dell offers ubuntu.
I would.
phanbouy @ Jun 15th 2008 6:27PM
cuz I R SOO EXPENSIVE
Mark Anderson @ Jun 15th 2008 6:29PM
It's cheaper and runs business software without having to install the OS you bought the Mac to avoid in the first place?
nizzy1115 @ Jun 15th 2008 6:32PM
I would in a heart beat! The dell looks gorgeous!
imacmatt09 @ Jun 15th 2008 7:49PM
Hey phanbouy, how did you get highest ranked? It though they disabled that a while ago. Lucky :(
finnith @ Jun 15th 2008 7:58PM
They never disabled it, it just stopped appearing probably due to a glitch.
phanbouy @ Jun 15th 2008 8:09PM
but they fixed the glitch. so you won't be receiving a paycheck anymore.
gunnyboy @ Jun 16th 2008 2:10AM
Hell yes
still have my Dell from 02, killed 3 Macs in the same time frame 2 iBooks and a PowerBook
Jon Doe. @ Jun 16th 2008 1:04AM
Because Apple makes unreliable shit?
Because Apple makes you ship your damn laptop too them or leave it at an Apple store unlike Dell who will send a tech to your home or work location to repair your system?
Because apple makes their shit so proprietary its a massive PITA to upgrade even the hard drive on a MBP; meanwhile its easy as hell to get to the ZIF socket on these new Studio laptops to replace you CPU down the road?
Because I don't need to take my laptop into Apple and get the run around that _I_ damaged the laptop and the shit isn't covered by my warranty? Shall I go on, and on, and on, and on?
Haikibutsu @ Jun 16th 2008 2:19AM
Hey, we killed Clak that night, and We stomped out iEye.
I think we can handle this toll.
Haikibutsu @ Jun 16th 2008 2:21AM
Hey, john, this post may seem a bit biased since I do own a mac, but I have to say, the Mac book pro and macbook are relatively easier to service.
Now, I didn't know Dell actually sends techs to you. I just wonder how long you'd have to wait, as well as if the costs are very good. I am actually satisfied with Apple's servicing options.
Jon Doe. @ Jun 16th 2008 4:57PM
I've had my C2D MBP since Apple replaced it fall of '06. And I had the previous one since Feb of '06. The first laptop was in for repairs a total of 4 times before Apple up and replaced it. The repair work was the following: System wouldn't sleep, system would randomly wake up in my bag and overheat, display wouldn't turn on, and the kicker was that someone over torqued a screw and I couldn't take the top off the install my new hard drive.
At that Point Apple replaced the laptop outright in Nov of '06. After that I've had the audio die on my laptop when the digital point got "stuck" in the on position and disabled the internal speakers. And the display would only display 8-bit colors. As of 3 months ago my DVD drive will no longer burn anything consistently. I've gone through a spindle of DVD's and when I took it into the Apple store they informed me that they didn't transfer the Apple care to the new Mac so I needed to contact Apple's....I foreget the name. Account amagement? Account mediation. Don't know. When I called them they gave me attitude and told me that they couldn't transfer the Apple care since it was over a year since I got the new laptop. 2 weeks later I called back and got someone else. This time I escalated to a manager and they DID transfer the Apple Care after reading the case file. So I went back into the Apple store and its burning disks fine again....until I got home.
So yah. I'm probably the most unlucky Apple user in the history of the damn company and while my expierience may not be typical I've been without my laptop, and as such a working computer for over a month and a half since I got my laptop back in Feb of 06.
Dell on the other hand. I do warranty work for them. (Contracted so I have no love for Dell, Apple, or anyone.) Unless the part is backordered we are REQUIRED to contact the user the same day the part is delivered to us. While the tech may not tell you this you CAN ask them to come to your place of work to do the repair work. We will do it as long as the drive is within reason. Someone asked me to drive 50 miles to their job, when there home was 15. Sorry no.
We also are authorized to order additional parts while onsite. So none of this nandy pamby crap that you need to contact Dell again. No. We will call Dell for you and get the parts. Again parts "usually" ship in 24 hours....usually.
But no. Dell's warranty runs rings around Apple's. I've seen both and this is practical experience here. Dell's IS better.

Sorry about the typos. Sometimes I type a bit too fast.

Anthony @ Jun 16th 2008 12:53AM
The 9 series on laptops are just rebranded 8 series.
Thi mam(kris120890) @ Jun 15th 2008 6:21PM
Any release dates yet.
boingjones @ Jun 15th 2008 6:25PM
Man, I so totally want to know what all the little numbers are pointing to. Mainly the little yellow square there near the down arrow.
Thi mam(kris120890) @ Jun 15th 2008 6:29PM
Finger print scanner by the looks.
Shadowise @ Jun 15th 2008 6:31PM
Fingerprint reader by the looks of it.
Mam00th @ Jun 15th 2008 6:31PM
Am I the only one who think those "Pictaflex" print are not that pretty, not to say kind of ugly?
k @ Jun 15th 2008 6:35PM
Engadget's not in trouble cos the watermarks say "confidental"
Eli @ Jun 15th 2008 6:42PM
Michael Dell's dentists sent these images out as a practical joke.
Jon Doe. @ Jun 16th 2008 1:13AM
They apparently didn't get in trouble with the new Dell E images. Its obvious whoever is providing these images has a http://dcse.dell.com account. Well sans the Dell E series since obviously that info isn't in there yet.
They should be careful. I could easily see Dell starting to embed login account numbers in the images of new models that come out....steganography and its pretty easy to do now a days on a web server.
alienbeing @ Jun 15th 2008 6:41PM
Looks like this thing has Macbook Air envy.
EDiT808 @ Jun 15th 2008 7:55PM
Uh no it doesnt. Looks like the mac book air has i wanna be a real note book envy. Yes i know its a "subnotebook" but you get my point... This series follows the XPS m1330/m1530 which guess what? Came out before the mac book air *gasp*
Mobius_1 @ Jun 15th 2008 11:38PM
I have no idea how you think this looks like the Air, and more importantly, why does EVERY product launched by another company have to be some sort of Apple envy? They did not invent the laptop, y'know
Jon Doe. @ Jun 16th 2008 1:15AM
No the Macbook Air just wants to be a real laptop when it grows up, but knows that it never will because unkie Steve has his thin fetish. Purge unkie Steve! Purge!
vexx786 @ Jun 15th 2008 6:42PM
That keyboard looks simliar to sony's laptop keyboard, where there is a very small, lower leveled border around the edges of each key,
Shadow @ Jun 15th 2008 6:55PM
This thing looks almost identical to the XPS m1530 I'm typing on right now.
The only visible differences are the colors and the fact that on mine the power button is a physical switch, it appears to have been moved to a touch sensor in this one... ew. It pisses me off I have to look at my laptop to hit the volume buttons :/
Yankees368 @ Jun 15th 2008 6:59PM
Does anyone have word on when the new Latidude E series comes out?
Jon Doe. @ Jun 16th 2008 1:17AM
Sometime in the next 24 months. You heard it here first! ;-P
Jimbo @ Jun 15th 2008 7:07PM
