That's because these laptops werenpt meant for gaming. This one with the 8600 was kinda meant for it.
Also, yesterday, Engadget has around 2-3 laptop announcements with 9000's series GeForce... Not to mention the many other 8800 laptops all over the place.
But paying a lot for a 8600 laptop makes no sense. There's a huge gap between the 8600 and those that followed.
If you take the link to the previous post on this, they're calling this line "midpoint" between their entry level consumer line and the XPS "high end" line. I think this is more of a laptop intended for those who want great performance and high style, not necessarily for gaming. I can see people doing image editing and such with no problem and probably doing some video editing as well. But mostly, I think it will appeal to those who want something that looks pretty while not having stodgy performance.
Sony's just released a 15.5-inch addition to its VAIO S Series that not only adds a crucial bit of extra display acreage, but also bumps things up to a full 1080p.

Better than most laptops coming out with freaking GMA 950 graphics!
And even 950 graphics is good enough for most users. The 8600M is pretty damn good.

Well if this is a midrange laptop then I'd consider 8600 really sufficient...
